Why is being Gay Newsworthy?

13
Vote

by user Leslie Monteiro

Ellen Degeneres started a trend. In her series finale of the sitcom “Ellen”, she used her show as a platform to come out of the closet indicating that she was gay. Then, she did an interview for Time Magazine explaining why she was gay. Now, you see athletes copying her act. Former WNBA superstar Sheryl Swoopes admitted to a magazine that she was gay couple of years ago. Now, John Amaechi admitted that he was gay after an internet report talked about a former NBA player would go admit his sexuality on Valentine's Day. He is coming off with a book about the challenge of being a gay athlete.

First of all, who really cares what John Amaechi, Sherryl Swoopes, or any celebrity do in their lives? Who cares about their sexuality? For one thing, it is none of anyone’s business. Fans should just worry about how they perform at their craft. It should not affect their thinking about those people. It should not even be newsworthy. There are other things in sports that fans can talk about. Heck there are other issues in real life that people need to be consumed such as looking for jobs, worrying about the soldiers, trying to make ends meet, and etc. Those are more pressing issues to talk about.

It is understandable why Amaechi is writing a book. He is trying to educate others about the impact of being gay at the workforce and how it affects people’s relationship on gays and lesbians. He talked about how being gay is taboo in sports. He talks about how male athletes look down on others who are gay. He wants everyone to know that it is okay to be gay. These are great points that he is making. It is good to see him send a message.

With that said, one would hope that he or she would not look down on others or look at them differently because he is a gay or if she is a lesbian. It is the 21st century. People should have a better paradigm on this situation. They need to realize that people are people. They should judge people based on their character and talents not based on gender, sexuality, color, nationality, or the way they dress. We live in a culture sadly where it is okay to make fun of people or mock people for who they are. We mock people for being dumb at school. Majority of the people should look in the mirror and see themselves because most people have to look at their lack of principles.

It is too bad that teammates are not crazy about having a gay guy in the locker room. Why does it bother them so much? Isn’t the purpose of playing sports is to produce and win games? That is the way it should be. There is no need to worry about other stuff. The only time a player should be treated like an outcast if he or she is a jerk or if he or she became a problem child with the team. One can say that a player can talk about gay issues with his teammates. So what? They can be educated about how gay people are no different than heterosexual people. It is doubtful that he or she would go promote his or her sexuality. Why would he or she anyway?

Amaechi’s admission is not a big deal for most basketball fans. Most fans do not even know who he is considering that he really was not a factor in the league. He had one good year in the 1999-2000 season for the Orlando Magic. The question is suppose [[Dwayne Wade]], Gilbert Arenas, or any other superstar comes out of the closet and admit he is gay right now or when he retires. There is going to be a reaction based on what they accomplished in the league. Why would there be a reaction from fans and the media if that scenario unfolded because they are superstars? Why should they be held to a high standard because they are superstars?

Sadly, this is the world that we live in. We do not want to accept anyone who is a homosexual. We look down on people for that. It is big news if someone is gay or a lesbian. One can hope that someone can be educated about these things. One has to pray that everyone would be mature in reading stuff about them or hearing about them. We should stop making a big deal about athletes coming out of the closet.

John Amaechi’s epitaph should be that he was a basketball player for several years and that he tried to make a difference in people’s lives not because whether he is a homosexual or not.

Bball: I am glad that you pointed it out and that's why I edit. I got a message from False Prophet saying that I am bogging down the site because I edit a lot. I can care less what happens to this site. I worry about making sure my article is readable and understandable. That's my concern. I am not going to apologizing for editing 10 or 15 times especially since I do not have Microsoft Word. Thanks for pointing it out, Bball.

I complained because it appeared to me that you were editing to get your user stats up, when you were leaving major changes to be done for another edit. If you make 10-15 legitimate edits, i wouldn't complain, but when some of the diffs will either change something so small it is wierd that someone would save after that, or that there is nothing changed between edits is when it looks bad.

Why is being Gay Newsworthy? Because the media makes it so. Idealy, it wouldn't be something that is that big of a deal, but because people are scared about the backlash from teammates and from team officals that they will get by comming out of the closet.

False Prophet: No way I would do this to get my user stats up. I am not that type of person and I don't vote for my articles either. Why would I do that? BTW, I apologize if I went public on this, but I do not know how to email you from this site so I went with up there. I edit a lot because I don't have Word at my home computer and I want to make sure that my article looks appropriate. I am not that great of a writer yet in terms of making the column readable. I do this all the time when I write for a town newspaper and for SportsPageMagazine.com.

I don't know why the media made a big deal about this. It was not even news for me. The news story should be the Pacers, who has three players being arrested at a nightclub. That's an issue to me because that organization is having these types of problems lately which is sad since that franchise used to have good role models. I know Amaechi is going out just to sell his book, but there should not have been stories about others take on Amaechi going out. In today's Star-Tribune, Steve Aschburner talks to Troy Hudson about Amaechi being gay. Why even ask Troy? As for teammates and team officials, they need to get over it as I mentioned in the column. Their job is to work together at practice, shootaround, and at games. That's it. They do not have to hang out after that.

So far, not many players care

Homosexuality is the last great barrier in sports. It is the last barrier in this country, where a group of people can be publicly ridiculed and the masses dont blink an eye. There are homophobic players and people out there, and it is a shame.

From the outlook it doesnt seem that the majority of people care if a player is gay or not. For myself as an athlete, and from teh profesional athletes Ive spoke with over the past 48 hours, they would actually prefer that a teammate come out and tell them they are gay, versus trying to hide it. AT least that way they know how to react to them weither it be positive or negative.

The media of course has a huge hand in this. In their true nature as media hawks they are trying their best to swirl this into as big a frenzy as possible.

I ridicule Christians all the time! They "follow Jesus" by acting exactly like hippocrates he warned NOT to be like!

Jesus loves EVERYONE. That includes EVERYONE, because we're ALL children of GOD. Jeez, he hung out with a dead man and a prostitute... he loves EVERYONE. Jesus also warned "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" yet let any "Christ"-ian talk about homosexuality and they instantly call it "abominable sin".

I go through this stuff all the time with my gay brother who died of AIDS in Spetember and my (say they're) Christian family.

There's a verse in the Bible they (Christians) always refer to in Leviticus about "abominations to the Lord" where it states "men laying with men" as an abomination. Yet if you KEEP reading it also says that God shows them forgiveness and loves them too.

Sorry to get into it like this - there is more to Manny than you know!

See Manny, that's the problem with America. Christians are always grouped in a collective "they" and the "they" is always labled with the worst sides of things. It's not ok to say "they" when it relates to blacks or gays or any other group of people, but it's a.o.k. when Christians are concerned.

I am a Christian. You're labeling me a "they."

I don't hate gay people. I have gay friends. I've seen Rent three times! (he he) Do I think it's natural? No. Do I think it's a sin? Yes. I also have friends that live together and aren't married. I have friends that their main hobby is drinking. I have all kinds of friends that do all kind of things I don't agree with.

But guess what, I sin as well and I'm saved from them by the grace of God just as gays or any other people can be if they follow Christ. I know I'm no different from anyone else and I love everyone the same. I'm not here to judge anyone else and no one else is here to judge me, either.

You - and a lot of America - make obscene and offensive generalizations and stereotypes among Christians. Yet, we're the only group that doing so is widely accepted. None of the Christians I know are anything like what you described yet you say "any Christian."

Don't judge a group of millions of people just because of a few loud mouths in the news. Look beyond to the people that actually follow what Jesus said about not letting your right hand know what you left hand is doing. Thousands of churches across the country are reaching out to minorities, gays, poor nations and millions of others and yet you sit on your throne of hate because a few have their priorities and core beliefs way out of line?

I'm sorry you've had bad experience in your family. I'm sorry you've gotten bad perceptions by some of the talking heads in this country. But let me assure you there are Christians out there who don't hate everyone but themselves. Who try their darndest to love everyone they way Jesus did, even though everyone else seems to hate us for doing so...

Well first off, I am a Godian. Once I was a "Christian" and it seemed to me there was a roadblock at that point. I could be saved and forgiven and go to heaven with all of the believers. Sounds great! So I figured if heaven is so great, why don't we all kill ourselves and go there now? Why wait? Then I realized heaven IS HERE among us every day. The beauty, wonderment and wordless amazement that makes this existence is our gift from GOD and it is all GOD. I worship God because as the wonderful example Jesus was, HE also worshipped GOD.

I'm sorry you got wrapped up in my generalization, but as they ARE generalizations, they are usually true. My bad for not saying "most" Christians. Of course, most "Christians" deny the fact that "Christians" have killed more people in the name of their "god" than any other group in history.

But being a good person and being "like Christ" are not the same thing. Jesus never read the Bible (it was written well after he ascended). Jesus didn't go to church (except to cause a stir with the moneychangers). Jesus didn't preach, he taught. Jesus prayed in private, by himself, he didn't sing hymns or call homosexuals sinners. He healed the sick boy of a Roman guard. That "boy" wasn't his son, he was a homosexual love slave, it's well documented.

Christians bash sin. Since we all sin, Christians bash everyone. That's not love, that's hate. Jesus never shamed anyone, never cast out anyone, even after "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" Jesus DIDN'T cast a stone! It's not our job to say what is or isn't sin, unless we put ourselves in the position of GOD, which breaks the first commandment (the only one that matters). "Thou shalt have NO other gods before me"... that includes our "self". Now tell me what "Christians" are/aren't...

maybe this isn't the right forum, but I like this kind of debate more than sports anyway.

It will continue to be newsworthy until an impact athlete comes out WHILE they are playing. Clearly averages (1 out of every 9 people was the last # I heard) would indicate there are more than a few gay athletes playing right now. Just like it was a big deal when Hank Greenberg was Jewish or Jackie Robinson was black. Everyone wants to be treated the same, yet we (the media... yes "we") go to painstaking efforts to point out their differences (See: Black Christian Coaches in the Super Bowl)

I met Amaechi a few times. He lived part of the year in Scottsdale. I met him on the basketball courts (and he refused to play with a group of us) and in the grocery store (apparently he likes to cook with soy sauce), and he has a website full of poetry and charitable efforts. Every time I saw him he had logo gear on. At the grocery store he was wearing a Jazz shirt when the checkout guy went into his "I'm from Utah! Do you play for the Jazz?" He was embarrassed to admit it! Why wear the gear if you don't want people to know?

I saw the end of the scrolling tagline yesterday "first NBA player to come out" so I sat around and waited to see the first part of the tagline and when I saw "Amaechi", I giggled. This was NOT a surprise to me. I was just hoping it was someone of more star power so we'd HAVE something to talk about... Ray Allen? Ben Wallace? Eddy Curry? I thought for sure it was going to be Kwame Brown, but I guess he's "coming out" later...

Gay schmay, there are important things in the world to ponder.

I wonder how long it will be until it isn't newsworthy and definitely look forward to that day. Even if he isn't a big NBA name, it's going to take more homosexual athletes like him (and people in general) to have the courage to come out to diffuse the newsworthiness.

When you play a team sport for any length of time, you have a tendency to figure things out pretty quickly. When little Johnny down the street would keep showing up for basketball practice with a black eye and fat lip, and it was because he was always falling off his bike, yet he was the only 9 year old in the whole town that could dribble between his legs, it didn't take very long to figure out his problems had nothing to do with his bike riding ability. John Amaechi wasn't the only gay player in the NBA during his career, and everyone in every locker room knows it. And doesn't care. Show up on time, do your job, and you could be a freakin' martian and no one cares. The only people who care, and who make this relevant, is people OUTSIDE the locker room. Does your neighbor cheat on his wife? Is the guy next to you at the office a crack addict? Do you care? And remember Pete Gent?

I find it highly ironical and disturbing that this author "Leslie Monteiro" is extremely hypocritical on the homosexual rights issue.

Case in point, Monteiro writes (see above): "Sadly, this is the world that we live in. We do not want to accept anyone who is a homosexual. We look down on people for that. It is big news if someone is gay or a lesbian. One can hope that someone can be educated about these things. One has to pray that everyone would be mature in reading stuff about them or hearing about them. We should stop making a big deal about athletes coming out of the closet."

Okay fair enough, I suppose. But why on ANOTHER blog, does Ms. Monteiro express the opposite view: "Now G-boy on the other hand is a sorry little shit. Do you know why they call him the G-man? Its because he likes looking for the G spot in men. Yeah its a little gay or faggy or whatever you want to call it. G-boy is just a little jealous pussy. He doesn't even have a dick. He has a big smelly pussy."

It gets more disgusting: " G-boy actually pissed his pants from the beating he took and he was left lying there like a steaming pile of poo crying and bleeding. It was real pathetic. I kinda felt sorry for him and was his friend and all but not no more. He has proved time and time again that he is a bleeding pussy with no guts or backbone. Next time I see him I'm going to spit in him face and kick him in his pussy. Then I'm going to give him a weggie and maybe shave one of his eyebrows off. G-boy can't do shit to defend himseld cause he's a little pussy and I will dominate the stupid poser."

Whomever really is this "Leslie Monteiro" individual, there seem to be a lot of hypocritical flip-flopping nature of this "work of writing".

For shame.
