Why have rankings

The West  Virginia Mountaineers fell in the polls again this week! Is it because they put in their backups late in the game to give them reps and not run up the score? Is that really necessary to keep from dropping? Winning the games don't seem to be working for them so well. If Florida or Oklahoma started higher in the polls than WV im sure they would still be there. So why even put the polls out until (at least) week 5? It is just a popularity contest until someone gets their first lose anyways, right? Now i know a lot of you don't respect the Big East and/or WV, and I'm fine with that (to each their own), but if you start the season in a spot and don't loose, then why fall?

Agreed watching WVU fall was one of the strangest things I have ever seen.

Unfortunately, running up the score does seem to affect some voters. I guess since they can't see many games, they just make a spot decision based on a score.

They can't see most games. There are well over 600 games in I-A per season. How can the coaches (who have to coach 7 days a week) see all of them? How can the media see all of them? And then how can you watch Maryland play WVU, and Oklahoma play North Texas and make any comparisons?

West Virginia fell because Florida took a ranked team, Tennessee, to the woodshed 59-20. The Mountaineers have been impressive, but the teams ranked 1-4 now, USC, LSU, Oklahoma, and Florida have definitely looked better. Louisville, one of WVU's most prized opponenets, fell to Kentucky, an SEC team, which only adds to Florida and LSU's claim to the top of the rankings because they are the big dogs of the SEC. The Mountaineers should only worry about running the table because that is the only thing they can control. If three of the teams in front of them lose, then they will be staring at a spot at the National Championship Game, which is the only thing that matters. But, at this point, the only possible way for them to get there is if the teams in front of them lose because 1-4 has been more impressive thus far.

I'm an Oklahoma fan, and the only reason OU is ranked above WVU is because of high scores. They have substituted, it's not like they're running up the points, but the fact that they've decimated teams is a big reason why they're ahead of WVU.

Hey, chief, there are lots of teams that haven't lost that have fallen. The pollsters aren't picking on your precious Big East. Texas was the preseason number 4 in both polls, and fell to 7th after winning the first week. Then they moved back up to 6th after beating a ranked opponent (hurdling Wisconsin, who had also won), only to fall back to 7th this week after ANOTHER win. Wisconsin dropped two spots after winning this week, just because Cal laid the wood to Louisiana Tech. It's not bias. It's not a popularity contest. It's just fickle pollsters trying to get their bearings when they only have a couple of games to judge performance. Stop whining.

they barely beat Arkansas state, they barely beat #22 TCU, who ain't 22 no more, and they beat UCF by 3 points. They're overrated.

Hey cheif longhorn, I think that Rawbeezeitz hit it on the head with that comment your beloved Texas has not won a meaningful game yet as a matter of fact the teams that they have beat are um how do I put this, high school teams they have gotten lucky. I dont know though we will see what happens next week when Texas plays Rice oh there is another great team it should be a close game. If they win that game big if they will see oklahoma in couple of weeks, hit me back then.

Yeah, I knew this was going to happen, because this is what happened last year. I wasn't touting Texas, yet it became a completely impertinent attack on them. I never said ANYTHING about Texas being overrated or underrated. In fact, if you had bothered to ask, I would have said that they're ranked higher than they deserve. My point was, you asked how a team can drop when they haven't lost a game. I gave you two examples of teams who are very popular that that has happened to, demonstrating that this isn't picking on the Big East and that it's not a popularity contest. I can give you more examples if you want. But, the point is, West Virginia's not the only team to have dropped without losing this year. They're not getting picked on anymore than Texas or Wisconsin was getting picked on. That's just the way it goes early in the season.

And yes, I did read your whole article, I just chose not to address the part about not having rankings before the 5th or 6th week because I agree with that part. However, preseason polls are a part of the hype and tradition of college football, so pointless as they may be, I don't see them going anywhere any time soon.

How can four teams with one loss still be ranked as high as 17th? Polls are meaningless.
