Why does the NFL use Instant Replay when the Refs Still Can't Get the Call Right?

During the first quarter of today's Steelers at Raiders game, Ben Roethlisberger was hit by a linebacker in the backfield. As Roethlisberger fell, the ball came loose. The refs called Big Ben down by contact, and the Steelers kept the ball. Oakland challenged the play, and the replays clearly showed the ball coming out before Roethlisberger's knee hit. However, the play stood as it was called on the field.

Later in the quarter, Roethlisberger threw the ball downfield to WR Cedrick Wilson. Wilson dove forward, put both his arms beneath the ball, and made the catch before the ball hit the ground. All replays showed this to be a clear reception. Unfortunately, both the referees disagreed in real-time, so Cowher was forced to use a challenge. After the challenge, the play stood as called.

One play against the Raiders and one play against the Steelers were called wrong on the field. Even after the refs were given a second chance to make the call right, they still did not overturn the play. I realize there must be "indisputable evidence," but these refs are taking that term to the extreme. Admit your mistake.

In the referee crew's defense, they are playing down a man. The line judge sprained his ankle early in the game.

Yeah that was ridiculous as well. That is another one of those expressions at play with "judgement call." Aren't all calls made by a referee "judgement calls?" They should have been allowed to review that catch.

It is only crap when the call is not what you think/thought it should be.

Exactly, we all see the games with homer colored glasses whether they're our favorite teams or not. I honestly feel that the Jets player had too much momentum going fowards that he would have kept sailing out of bounds.

Whether he did or not isn't the point. We're trying to figure out why the refs wouldn't even take a look at it. Personally, I'm still up in the air about whether he would have come down in bounds or not, but I absolutely know it deserved another look. With the tool of replay available, why would the refs not take advantage?

no, instant replay basically slows the game down and takes away from the natural flow of the teams/crowd. i'm saying that the no-call in the jets game was complete crap. not because i'm a jets fan and i know they suck and always will - just like boston red sox. my problem is that it was very EASY to see his momentum was taking him forward not east-west. He was hit east-west and that took him out of bounds. i would bet the farm that he would have landed in bounds. that being said, it doesn't matter cause the jets aren't that good anyway. the main point is that they got it wrong and if you have instant replay and get it wrong or don't use it- then just get rid of it. I REALLY HOPE MLB IS NOT STUPID ENOUGH TO GO TO INSTANT REPLAY.

Did anyone see the forward pass in the Chiefs game that got ruled a fumble? I know it's not reviewable, but there was another one in the Titans game when Vanden Bosch got called for going low on the QB, when all he did was reach up from the ground and grab the QB's leg. The refs made a lot of terrible calls yesterday. And, if I may say so, that "going low" rule very well may be the most idiotic thing the NFL has ever done.

anyone who thinks he was going out of bounds has their head up their ass. i saw the play live and ten thousand replays. he would have landed a good two feet from the sideline.
