Why do you love your favorite team?

31
Vote

by Hoops2662

It seems like a rather straight forward question, doesn't it? Why do you love your favorite team? But look beyond the obvious and consider the options. Is it just the results that a team gives you that makes them true to you? Is it the character of the players on your team that make you feel good? Or could it be the guy leading the way, the coach that brings the fanatic out of you?

I think this is where it starts.  We all want our teams to do well. No one wants their team to lose all the time. So, yes results do factor big-time in all this. Yet, I do think that it's not the only attribute.

I'll be honest, I've been a life-long Red Sox fan. It surely can't be because they always win. I was 10 years old when they broke my heart, losing a 14.5 game lead to the dreaded Yankees, including a gut-wrenching one-game playoff loss that cost my entire school bus a piece of gum to our bus-driving Yankee fan. It's only until the last four years, twice I might add, that Red Sox Nation has felt the glory of a World Championship.

Part of the fun was the guys on the team. I idolized Jerry Remy and Jim Rice, wearing both their numbers in different seasons in Little League. The Rooster, Rick Burleson was as gritty as it gut. Add in the fact that I used to try and emulate Fred Lynn's dynamic catches in my backyard and you can start to understand what I liked about this team.

Still to this day, I'm an undying Red Sox supporter. The same can't be said of the New England Patriots. I did, at one time, call them my favorite NFL team. That was until the Bob Kraft-Bill Parcells rift. How could Bob Kraft not let the Tuna shop for the groceries? After all, he had won two Super Bowl Titles with the NY Giants and had turned football in New England around by bringing the Pats to the Super Bowl against the Packers. It was at this time, I chose the Parcells side of the argument and went to the Jets with him.

Have the Pats suffered, absolutely not. They are the best team in football, bar none. Bill Belichick is a Hall of Fame head coach. That can not be argued. But, would I love this team. Absolutely not.

They've turned into a bunch of guys who wait for someone to diss them and turn it around to use it as motivation. The "us against the world" approach is tired.  The lovable 2001 Team Patriots have now been turned into a club that is bitter and at times disrepectful. From spygate to Rodney Harrison's HGH use to Rosie Colvin spiking on the Colts logo, to Bellichick frowns on anyone who's ever uttered an ill word about him, it's all become too much for me.

It's not that I root against them, it's just that I now lack any feeling for them.

So, now I want to know how you feel about your teams and how you got to the place you are now. It's your turn...

Bears rock-- but at the same time they also suck- that's why I'm a cheesehead now-- and for the record- any hockey team who plays in a city where it doesn't snow on a consistant basis is stupid-- same with football--

I have "known" the Lakers longer than I have anyone outside my family. I grew up with Magic and Showtime in the 80s, I cried when Magic made his HIV announcement on November 11, 1991, I gutting out the Sedale Threatt/Anthony Peeler/Cedric Ceballos era, basked in the Shaq-Kobe 3-peat and was devastated when Chick Hearn passed away. Even if i wanted to leave, I couldn't. We've been through way too much together!

I've never heard the Patriots utter a disrespectful word about any other team, player, coach, or an official. Why do I love the Patriots? Because when I was in preschool, we'd drive by Foxboro Stadium everyday.

This article is almost a mirror image of my own feelings as a sports fan. I grew up in the heart of New England and as I tell anyone who asks me about being a Red Sox fan: you don't have a choice. Your family loves them, your friends love them, and you're popped out of the womb loving them. I used to watch the games with my grandpa when I was a kid and would stay with my grandparents for summer vacation on the Cape. I was cemented in my fandom by seeing my grandfather go NUTS over every loss and just stare at the television in disbelief while the Sox post-game show described how we just blew another 8 run lead.

It was a lot easier to grow up as a Bruins fan. Even tho we didn't win the Cup while I was a kid, we contended every single year and still had exciting guys like Cam Neely and Ray Bourque.

Being a Celtics fan as a kid kind of sucked as that was 'the beginning of the end.' I never got into watching them as much as I did the B's and Sox but I still cheered for them every chance I got.

As for football.. my childhood was full of 'Will the Patriots move to CT? Where are the Pats gonna move to? Screw spending money on players, lets move the team!' This turned me off to the Patriots and football in general. I ignored the NFL until I moved to the south and it got shoved in my face. I wasn't sure who to root for, despite the pleas from my immediate family to become a Pats fan again. I played football in HS with a friend of mine. Halfway through the year his father became an assistant defensive coordinator for the Ravens and he had to move to Baltimore. I became a Ravens fan. The next year we won the Super Bowl and I haven't looked back since.

I still pull for the Pats (against everyone but the Ravens) but I'm never going to get that unconditional feeling of love for the team that the rest of my family has.

Similar story. I was never much of a college basketball fan. when I was a kid my cousin went to Syracuse so I started to root for them and still do to some extent. But about 10 years ago I met a guy who became my best friend. He lived in Fayetteville North Carolina and went to undergrad and med school at UNC. He was passionate about the Tar Heels and I enjoyed his enthusiasm even though I did not have much of a rooting interest. When he left for the war in Iraq I took it as my "duty" to root for the Tar Heels while he was gone. That is why I am a Tar Heels football fan.

My favorite sports team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was lots of fun to watch them gradually go from pitiful double digit losers to winning the Super Bowl. In 2002-2003 I was stuck in a horrible job and the worst day was always Sunday. When they won the NFC championship against the Fleagles I was lying in bed because I was too exhausted to be up and around. The Bucs winning and the way they won (Ronde Barber running back an interception 60 yards in front of all the screaming, booing Philadelphia fans) made me feel much better. It is not always easy being a Bucs fan but the success of that organization and what they do for their fans in that wonderful stadium is what the best part of pro sports are all about.

I came to love Duke as a student there. It isn't just the success of the basketball team--though that helps--it's the entire experience. A game in Cameron is an unbelievable experience. Camping out to get into a game is great--and I was there before such a thing was as famous and organized as it is now. I once camped out for a UNC game that was scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Around 8:00 in the morning for some reason the line surged like the doors had been opened and suddenly we were all crunched together. Then it started to rain. I was crushed between 4 different people--but it wasn't all bad, as I got a date to a formal out of it! The university pitied us and opened the doors around 11 and it was a raucous party for the next several hours. By the time the game was played, we were at a fever pitch. It was a classic battle that Duke won. I'll always be a fan because of experiences like that one.

My favorite sports team is the Atlanta Braves. I first started watching them in 1978 when they first came on cable television in our area of Louisiana. They were awful back then and Ted Turner even managed a game from dugout himself one time. Joe Torre had them in first place in 1982 but they couldn't beat the Brewers so didn't get to go to World Series. Braves have a tradition of letting free agent players go and they are keeping that tradition by letting Andruw Jones go this offseason. Will never forget the game when Sid Bream slid home safely with the winning run against the Pirates in a playoff game. Still don't understand why Charlie Leibrandt a lefthander was brought in to pitch against Kirby Puckett who homered to win the 6th game of World Series and the Twins won it the next day. Saddest thing to me about the Braves long run of NL East pennants was that they were eliminated from so many playoffs in those years. They say pitching is everything but even with Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine they still had problems getting to World Series.

Growing up in Orange County it would be natural to be a Angels, Rams, Lakers and Kings fan. Well I am two out of four and those two I had to come back around to.

For football it all started when on Nov 26th 1977 when as a child and I watched Tom Jackson return a Bert Jones pass for a 73 yards Interception return. I saw all that Orange I was hooked ever since.

I became a White Sox in 1981 after being a Reds fan. Growing up, the Reds were always on Game of the Week and they had guys like Rose, Driessen, Griffey and the fugliest man ever to play in the majors George Foster. But they broke up the Big Red Machine and I needed a new team. I never wanted to take the easy way out and become and Angels or Dodgers fan. So what do I do? I pick a team that had what I thought was a cool hat. I loved the black/very dark navy block SOX hat. Sure the rest of the uni's sucked, since it was at the end of the court jester uniforms. I wanted to be different and that was different.

I used to hate the Lakers because they always won and I got hooked on the Nuggets since they just wanted to fast break and score, they could not play D to save their lives. Also they had a hobo as a coach. Come on Doug More, great guy, good coach but he looked like a hobo at times. But over the years you could not help but love the Showtime Lakers.

The Kings - I rooted for them, but I tried out other teams, but I came back to my senses and took up the Gold and Forum Blue (since Cooke hated purple). So in the mid 80's I was back as a Kings fan, and I did this before Great One. I am talking when it Bernie Nichols, Dave Taylor, Marcel and two rookies Jimmy Carson and Lucky.

UCLA - I hate USC and it was a place I always wanted to go to, but if you read my other post you will see why I did not get in.

Dad's friend gave him 2 Jets seasons tickets in the early 80s. I have been going to games with him ever since.

Devils moved to NJ when I was 6 and just started playing hockey. Suffered through the lean years until they became a model franchise in the mid '90s.

Now the shocker. I started out a Phillies fan. Living in Central Jersey we were closer to the Vet than to Shea and my dad refused to go to Queens. I assume I switched allegience around 1984 when I was coming into my own as a fan and the Mets were getting good. Still, my favorite players as a child were Phillies (at least at some point), Mike Schmidt and Pete Rose.

I was a California Angels fan growin up in Philly's suburbs because of a bicycle license plate I got in a box of Honeycomb and I thought it was cool they played for the whole state of California! Plus when Bob Boone got traded, I had ammo to rub in the wounds of Phillies fans who dealt with Bo Diaz. (link to my second favorite website)

but did you ever go to a game at the Vet? man was that an awful stadium to see a game. The food was good, but the upper deck actually hung over the outfield so if the guy hit a shot to the wall or a homerun it was directly below you and you had no idea what happened except for the roar or groans of the crowd. But when I was in high school my brother got a job with the Eagles and his office was at the Vet and he could just come and go to baseball games as he wanted. I was a Mets fan by then, but it was still pretty cool.

Did I ever go to the Vet? The first pro sports event I remember attending was at the Vet (1983 NL Championship Series). The only time I ever laughed beer out of my nose was at the Vet! I watched, but somehow restrained from joining people throwing food at a 5 year old on his Dad's shoulders in the parking lot of the Vet (the kid was wearing an Aikman jersey). I knew the rats by name. I lost my virginity after taking a date to the Vet. I watched a lady fall over a railing at the Vet. I got cranium in the 700 section. I had a schoolmate get stabbed after a game at the Vet. I learned how to not touch anything at the Vet (later re-learning THAT lesson in Vegas...). The food is ehhh... food is good everywhere in Southeastern PA. SE PA's ONLY redeeming facet is it's food. I watched Barry Bonds hit 2 HR in a game TWO different times at the Vet. I never spilled a drink into the bullpen but I helped boo Darren Daulton's daughter at a father-kid pre-game exhibition. (He was batting .090 at the time). I almost got ran over by Ukee Washington in his SUV at the Vet! I spent 1/7th of my time in Philadelphia enjoying SEPTA including the Orange Line (all the way to both ends). Just because I only saw one Eagles game there (I saw a ton of Temple Football -and lived to tell about it) and never threw a battery at JD Drew doesn't mean I wasn't there! Pfft! Did I go to the Vet? Now, ask me if I ever went to the Spectrum....

This is easy - mine is the Chicago Cubs. I was about 8 when we moved into Wrigleyville - 2 blocks from Wrigley Field. Sad to say, I had very little to no friends but when I heard the crowd down the street, it just alloured (sp) me. I never knew what baseball was before going to my first game. I walked down the block and saw a lot of people just waited on Waveland Ave for a HR ball - I even talked to a few. The next day I went to my first game in the bleachers. I was an immediate bleacher bum. I was welcomed - everyone was so kewll & nice and me bieng by myself, a lot of people watched over me - making sure I wasn't getting into trouble, etc. I learned of the game from the bleacher fans. A HR ball that was hit by Bill Buckner landed near where I was - the fan who caught it knew that this was my first game and gave it to me.

After the game, he showed me where the players parking lot was where we could get the autographs - I stayed there for hours waiting for every single player to leave to see if I could get thier autographs. I then went to every single home game that there was (that didn't fall on a school day that is) - I knew the fans, I knew the players - from Bill Buckner to Ivan DeJesus to Jo-dy Jo-dy Davis to Leon Durham, Ryne Sandberg, Lee Smith (who taught me how to throw a curve ball), Ron Cey, Bump Wills, Larry Bowa, Bobby Dernier, Gary Matthews, Rick Sutcliffe & even Shawon Dunston, etc etc... I was such a regular that I've been on the field multiple times when I sat in the grandstands and got the autographs before the game near the dugouts... I even knew the ballgirl Marla Collins...

I cared (and still do) about these guys - I felt every win & gut wrenching loss... as a kid I cried when they won the Eastern Division in 84' - then cried again when they lost to the Padres...

To this day I'm proud to be a die hard Cubs fan and I bleed Cubbie Blue...

Unless your parents were huge fans of some team, because of where they grew up, or were transplanted to. I will always be a Missouri Tigers fan, because I was born and raised in Columbia. Living through Missouri's tough years was devastating to me. But when I was a kid, Missouri was the fourth best football team of the 60's. I'll never stop rooting for them. I'll always hope for a great Missouri basketball team. I moved to Kansas City in the 80's, and I'll never stop rooting for the Chiefs.
