Why did Green Bay miss out?

I saw on NFL.com that the Green Bay Packers missed the playoffs, finishing 8-8 with the New York Giants.

I am not an expert on tie-breaking procedures, but how did the Giants beat the Packers in that respect?

Every statistic was the same, apart from Green Bay were 5-1 in division as opposed to New York being 4-2, and New York had a superior (although negative) points differential.

What are the NFL Tiebreakers, and how do they work? And more importantly, why have Green Bay missed out!? They had a better division record. Or did they lose to the Giants earlier in the year?

It goes by strength of schedule in that situation since they aren't in the same division and haven't played each other.

So... does that mean that they add up all the records of the teams they played, and whichever team's opponents had the better record finish higher?

all teams lost close games, it's football in the "modern NFL" (Where all games are designed to be won by the team that last has the ball)

First of it was SOV (strength of Victories) not SOS. Secondly, they missed out because they lost the the Bills and Vikings. If they beat the vikings the first time, they would have made it in. Also, scoring a few points vs NE would have helped if they were to have lossed a different game and say the Giants tied them with SOV
