Why are the Packers cutting their best punter?

On Monday, the Green Bay Packers released punter B.J. Sander. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the moves.

Sander, a 6-foot-4, 218-pound veteran from Ohio State University, was the Packers' third of three selections in the third round of the 2004 draft after winning the Ray Guy award as the nation's top collegiate punter. Last season, he averaged 39.2 gross yards on 64 punts, with 11 inside the 20 and two touchbacks.

What baffles me was that B.J. Sander was their 3rd round selection from the '04 draft. Now its a wasted selection. Matt Ware of the Philadelphia Eagles, Matt Schaub of Atlanta Falcons, and Michael Turner of the San Diego Chargers , were picked after this guy. What a wasted of a pick.

He only has two years of experience. Sander had plenty of upside and potential. At Ohio State, he was their best punter. Now, they are going with the Canadian kid, Jon Ryan. He was a rookie last year, undrafted, from the University of Regina (Canada). I've never heard of that school.

While this is just a punter, moves like this make me wonder who is pulling the strings up there on the frozen tundra. And, are the Pack headed in the right direction?

For one he's just a punter. Maybe this Ryan kid is better, after all, just because you haven't heard of the school doesn't mean the kid can't kick. I mean, that's all punters do right? I'm pretty sure the Packers have more to worry about than who will be punting the football for them.

Exactly. If their offense was brilliant, you wouldn't need a good punter.

If use you a 3rd round pick on a punter... He should be the best punter in the leauge. Cutting him now admits a massive waste of a pick.

Thats exactly what I'm saying. A punter in the 3rd round better produce, much less get cut.

All he does is punt inside the 20... (an odd take on "All he does is catch TDs")

I'd rather him punt inside the 20 than go for it on 4th down inside the 20.

another example of the idiocy of mike sherman, wasting a 3rd round pick on a bad punter. a prime example of his drafting for need philosophy as opposed to drafting the best player
