Why are all Football Announcers Idiots?

Early in the third quarter of today's Pats-Jets game, Chad Pennington limped off the field with an ankle injury.  After Pennington left the field, second-year QB of the future Kellen Clemens came onto the field.  Having made only 2 pass attempts the previous season, Jets fans acknowledged his first meaningful series by cheering for him when he came onto the field, and showered him with another cheer following his first NFL completion.

Rather than praising this or simply letting it pass, Jim Nantz and Phil Simms proceed to comment about how awful it was that fans cheered when Pennington went off injured.  Despite the fact that fans waited until Clemens came onto the field to cheer rather than immediately when Pennington went off hurt, these two still concluded that the cheer was meant as an insult to Pennington.  Even when Jets fans replicated the cheer after the completion, Nantz and Simms still stuck to their guns.  Simms even resorted to the Tim McCarver philosophy of "I don't care what anyone says.  I am right," with no justification.

Chad Pennington isn't the best quarterback in the NFL, but, when he is healthy, he is competent and effective.  He has his weaknesses (arm strength), but has prominently displayed his ability to lead a team to the playoffs.  Furthermore, he was having an excellent game (16-21 for 167 yds and 2 TD).  Why on earth would the fans cheer Pennington getting injured?  There is no rational explanation for it.  Even Philly fans aren't that sadistic.

For fans to cheer when the starting quarterback was injured, it would have to be a Joey Harrington in Detroit type situation, which Pennington's time in New York surely is not.  It's one thing to be wrong.  It's another to be wrong and stubbornly cling to your position despite clear evidence to the contrary.  File this is as incident #578,642 that proves all football announcers are complete and utter buffoons.

The fans didn't wait for Clemens to come onto the field, they started cheering when Pennington was sturggling to get up. Then the cheers goteven louder when Pennington fell back down. It might have been Patriot fans cheering, though, who knows. There were a lot of them at the game.

They were definitely cheering the fact that Pennington would be coming out of the game. I'm from Philly, so I know when people are cheering injury versus anything else

I think it is a bit rash to assume that there is such animosity for Pennington that fans would make a collective decision to cheer when he was getting injured in the first game of the season.

And it wasn't like they were cheering him being taken off the field with a neck brace on the golf cart. He hobbled off the field on his own. But the fans there found some reason to cheer.

I honestly don't think there's much animosity towards Pennington on the part of Jets fans. My dad's a Jets fan, so I've watched most of their games over the years, and although Chad's never been amazing, he hasn't been awful either. I agree with the opinion in this article about them simply trying to encourage Clemens.

And just a side note- I would hope that Jets fans aren't really banking on Clemens to be the future QB of this franchise.

Then why did they start cheering the moment Pennington stumbles to the ground? I remember a few years back in New England when lots of fans wanted to see Michael Bishop over Drew Bledsoe, but I couldn't imagine fans cheering an injury just because they'd get to see the backup.

I watched the game and SOME fans clearly cheered when Pennington hit the field while trying to limp off the field.

Why do people from New York always depend on a guy named Clemens to be their savior?

They didn't wait for Pennington to limp off the field, and even if they did, if the ovation doubles in size when the backup comes on the field, it is an obvious insult to the starting quarterback.

Mike Tannenbaum sucks as a GM. Clearly he is delusional as the Jets fans believing Kellens is another Tom Brady. He wouldn't spend the cash to protect Pennington. As classless as the Jets fans who don't appreciate the kind of player they have in Chad.
