Why americans are slow to catch on to soccer

Posted from Future GM Thoughts

this one is for all the americans who don't like soccer and for the rest of the world who can't seem to grasp why us "Yankees" don't appreciate the world game more.

Imagine yourself for a second a fan of the New York Yankees. You've grown up your whole life in America following "American" sports like baseball, basketball and football and maybe a little hockey (it's at least a North American sport). You are currently 25 or older, and in addition to following those sports you grew up playing them. So now someone says come watch a soccer game and you laugh in their face. You've never played it or if you have you haven't watched any teams you have any reason to root for. Your local MLS team hasn't even been around as long as you have. So you watch and you say it's a boring sport, 90 minutes of nothing. From your perspective you are absolutely correct.

The problem soccer encounters is that on its face it's a boring sport. All you do is kick a ball around for 90 minutes, occasionally there's a nice pass, someone shoots on goal and most of the time misses. If you're lucky you have a couple goals a game, but that's it. Sounds pretty boring to me. However, it's all a matter of perspective. If you look at baseball all it is, is one guy throwing a ball to another for 3 hours or more. Most of the time the ball isn't even put in play and when it is most of the time it's an out. Even when you get a hit most of those don't score, so other than the occasional run every few half innings, there's not a whole lot of action.

If you know baseball however, there's much more to it. When you know the players and follow a team closely, you're thinking along with the action. You're thinking about what pitch the pitcher should throw, whether the manager should put on a hit and run, pinch hit, bring in a new pitcher, etc. Plus you know on any pitch your team could hit or give up a home run that alters the course of the game. Soccer is just the same, every pass matters, every tackle matters. All it takes is one quick pass or one player faking out another and there's a cross from the wing headed into the goal, and the game is completely changed. Even when the defense is just passing the ball around the back, one mistake and the other team is on goal.

Trust me I understand how people wouldn't like soccer, growing up i never watched it or played it; in fact i thought i hated it. I watched the 2002 World Cup and the American team (MY team) made a surprising run. Then i went and worked for an MLS team for two summers and i was following the team I worked for. All of a sudden i had a rooting interest and i started to see why soccer is a game that the rest of the world loves. If you have a rooting interest you will love it. Maybe you don't have a local team or a reason to root for any particular team so try betting on a soccer match before watching it. All of a sudden you'll have a reason to root for a team and it'll be much more interesting. The same goes for baseball, try watching a Royals-Orioles game that's being played in August when both teams are out of the race. You won't care who wins and you'll probably fall asleep midway through the 4th inning. Now try betting for one of the teams, and see if you aren't more interested. I'm not advocating betting on sports, i never do, it's illegal in 49 of 50 US states. However, decide to root for a team for whatever reason and all of a sudden you will understand the beauty of the "beautiful game" that is soccer.

The best is when people say soccer is not a sport. How do you figure?? Soccer requires more athletic prowess than most sports and sure its played at a slower pace, but guess what, so is baseball. And David Wells is living proof that you dont have to be in tip-top shape to play baseball.

I know, I can't stand it when people say soccer isn't a sport, and they just try to diss it by saying "Soccer is for a bunch of wussies." If you're going to insult soccer, at least give a logical reason why.

I'm a soccer fan, been playing it when i was a kid. I know baseball needs team wrok and so does american football, NEWS FLASH so does soccer. Not an easy sport to play when your not athletic, even people that i know that are more athletic then me can't dribble a ball right. It takes alot of practice and a whole lot of running and stammina. Soccer might not be a familiar sport in america, but it doesn't give the right for it's people to doubt it, by saying it is not a sport.

I think you sum it up pretty well. Soccer and Baseball both are either doomed or in danger in the US for one of the reasons they are also so popular around the world. Anyone in any country can play soccer or baseball without spending a dime, which of course is a significant thing in most parts of the world. You can use a stick and a rock for baseball and just about anything that rolls for soccer. Sure it's not the same without the equipment, but you see my point. It is simple and for that reason also pretty boring compared to the speed and relative complexity of American Football and basketball. Soccer can not compete with those sports for attracting new comers. If you have an emotional attachment already, then I'm sure it is an exciting sport to watch. Sometimes, as with baseball, a sport that moves slower actually increases the excitement if you already feel you have a rooting interest. The only reason baseball holds on to the level it does is because of its history and tradition in this country. It is a part of our culture. A part of who we are. The nature of the game itself is almost irrelvant. But since Soccer doesn't have that luxury and even baseball is "boring" compared to hoops and football both are doomed to struggle in this country. Even baseball will have to run faster to keep up with the NBA and NFL (which has really already passed it for cultural significance in sports) and Soccer is just a non-starter. We don't need the every man's game, because we have the means to play whatever game we like, and so we choose the "better" games. Of course that is somewhat subjective, but the reaility is, soccer has zero chance of catching the big 3 in this country and the same would be true even if 2 of the 3 suddenly disappeared.

You made a really good point about the HISTORY of baseball and how it affects us today. Why is it that you think many people like baseball in the US. It is America's pasttime, and lots of Americans look at baseball as more than just a sport. You don't get that from many people with other sports, or at lest from what I've seen. And I agree with you, soccer probably won't become popular especially with the Big 3 in the US, even if 2 of the 3 disappeared.

Yes, I definitely have to agree with you there, Ibearg. Watching sports like baseball, football, and basketball all your life, and then bringing another sport into a country where they aren't AS talented as many other countries and not AS popular as other sports.

I think many baseball fans don't like sports like soccer and basketball because they're so simple and usually boring to watch because you know what's gonna happen. Many soccer fans, from what I've seen, don't like baseball.

I don't know about you, but anytime a baseball game is on, I don't care who it is, whether it's the Red Sox/Yankees or it's the Royals/Devil Rays, the fact of the matter is history can be made in every single baseball game. Lots of milestones can be surpassed, and lots of exciting things can still happen. For example, hitting for the cycle, 4 home runs, no hitter, etc. Those are just SOME examples. For soccer or basketball, you'll get to milestones and they're quite exciting, but they're all like a Barry Bonds record: They are all obvious and "unspontaneous".

no matter how famous soccer is around the world it won't change that many veiws of the US citzens, cuz NFL, NBA and baseball is out there. These are the sports that ever american kid want to play with their friends or to become a player.

However, the Dream team buying David Beckham is such waste of its goveronment money, and waste for fans that supported David for years. Watching a talented player that moved from well known teams such as Manchest Untd. and Real madrid, and a former player of England team, leaving to play for an american team, and its own people doesn't even acknowledge the sport nor do many want to watch it.

That confuses many soccer fans these days.

I'm a soccer fan, but I actually consider soccer to be a much quicker game than American sports. There's hardly any stoppages in the action like in baseball, football, or basketball. Hockey compares to soccer in this, but still has much more stops in play. Yet American fans hardly seem to realize how much the action stops in their favorite sports.

Part of the fun is also the camaraderie of watching it. At home, that experience is missed. Even moreso if you're watching MLS, which unfortunately is marketed more at Girl Scout troops than soccer fans, and thus loses that experience (with a few exceptions, like Toronto).

The article title was why Americans are slow to catch on to soccer, not why they will NEVER catch on to soccer. I'm not saying its gonna be a top 3 sport, but i believe apart from the top 3-4 teams(Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal) most MLS teams could compete with any other team in the premiership. (Columbus the worst team in the MLS last year beat Fulham) This is with barely ten years of existence. Soccer stadiums are being built around the country and the fan base is growing. It's got a long way to go and it may never reach NFL status in this country, but it's here to stay.

MLS teams might be able to compete with the bottom dwellers of the EPL, but they wouldn't beat them on a consistent basis. Keep in mind, the Culumbus-Fulham match was a pre-season friendly for Fulham.

Why do we assume that when an MLS team beats an EPL team in a pre-season friendly, we treat it as if we just beat an EPL team in a tournament or something? Soccer stadiums are being built around the country. That's good and all, but you need fans to fill it. Even wit the fan base growing, they still can't fill 25,000 seat stadiums. Heck, why doesn't are national team have it's own national stadium? Lowly Canada has one. Jamaica has won, why not the US?

Why the minusing? Soccer is freakin boring. Not a little bit boring but really really really really really really really (hold on a second)... really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really boooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnggggggg.

Where's the action? Look everyone knows that most americans have the biggest cases of A.D.D you have ever scene- shit we can't even sit thru a 30 second commercial unless they show us some big titties. But for me to sit for 2 freakin hours and see one god damn goal that was scored in the last 5 minutes bores the living shit out of me. Now, if it's a sunday afternoon and I want to take a nap nothing better than an english dude blabbering on about soccer..... No, I take that back. Golf is better to sleep to than soccer.

Wow soccer really does suck!
