Why all the Complaining about Louisville?

15

by user The Beast

Okay, it seems that everyone here at Armchairgm.com is questioning my number one pick, the University of Louisville, for reasons which I do not understand.

The Cardinals have two first team All-Americans in their backfield, Brian Brohm and Michael Bush. USC had two All-American guys in the backfield, remember? They did alright. Hey, who wins without a great backfield? We know about Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush, but Texas also had a great backfield with Vince Young, Ramonce Taylor and Jamaal Charles. In 2003, LSU had Matt Mauck. Mauck wasn't a Heisman candidate, but he was an effective leader and didn't lose games. The Bayou Bengals also had Skyler Green and Justin Vincent. In 2002, Ohio State had the well-seasoned Craig Krenzel and freshman All-American Maurice Clarett. In 2001, Miami had Ken Dorsey and Clinton Portis. In 2000, Oklahoma had Heisman Trophy runner-up Josh Heupel. Their opponent, Florida State, had Heisman winner Chris Weinke. It remains clear that championship teams have great backfields, and Louisville certainly has that.

It also seems clear that teams tend to bounce back a year later from high expectations. Auburn was projected high in 2003 and failed, but finished 13-0 in 2004. West Virginia was pegged highly in 2004, failed, and finished 12-1 in 2005. Louisville was pegged high in 2005 and failed. But could they?...you know where I am going.

It is clear that everyone knows Louisville has an explosive offense with 8 returning starters. The key for the Cardinals is their defense. It really hurts to lose a guy like Elvis Dumervill, who had an NCAA-high 20 sacks. However, they have 7 returning starters. The Cards also have returning linebackers in Nate Harris and Abe Brown, who both had a combined 20 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

It's clear that the defense needs to be a notch better. However, they only really need the defense to show up for three games - Sept. 16 vs. Miami, Nov. 2 against conference rival West Virginia, and the bowl game which will be in Glendale, Arizona.

How dare you folks criticize me for picking Louisville, saying that I don't know better for I am sixteen. When they win it all, call. It's not like I'm a Louisville homer. Also, leave the guy who picked Cal alone. They might surprise. What's with all the love for Ohio State? You can't win without a good defense, ask USC. And the Buckeyes have 2 returning starters. 2 I said. The Beast is out.

At best, I'd say that Louisville is a dark horse for the #1. They will have to beat out both Miami and West Virginia, and I just don't think they can do that based on their defense. I have to agree with you about Ohio State (but mostly because I'm a Michigan fan), but your argument against the Buckeyes could apply to Louisville; not based on experience, but based on quality of play.
Also, though I do agree with your sentiment on not basing credibility on age (as I am 15 and cast the other dark horse vote for Cal), I can (somewhat) understand where they're coming from.

Relax, man. No need to get so worked up. No one's criticizing your pick. We're all just having a conversation about it in any open forum.
But I don't see it. Louisville will lose at least 2 if not 3 games this year. And I've said it before, I'll say it again: be careful underestimating Ohio State's D. They will be MUCH BETTER than you are suggesting. Mark it down.

Michigan fans can keep underestimating OSU's defense all they want. They'll get a good lesson in it down the road.

The age factor just made it more fun to rib you with. However, Louisville has a very steep uphill climb to be a #1 and for all the reasons I doubt WVU can make it to the top I expect Louisville to fail too. How many times have we heard that UL is ready to be a darkhorse team just to watchthem fall in Oct?

On another note, why did you stop using your other user name with a rank of 45 for "The Beast"? Were you trying to scare us into thinking we all should have voted for Louisville? :-)

The amount of grammatical errors in this article was embarassing. But of course since he's only 16, why does grammar matter?

Plus, I'm still not sure why you picked Louisville. You didn't convince me of anything except for that past national championship teams had incredible backfields.

Well, grammatical errors should matter to him because as he says on his profile page he is an "aspiring journalsist"...Or does he mean journalist, :)

I think Louisville's certainly got a shot. They've got the offensive talent with Brohm, Bush, Urrutia, etc. Plus, the schedule is favorable with both Miami and WVU coming to Louisville to play. In my mind they'll lose 1 game at least but win the Big East. Louisville/WVU could be one of the best games of the year.

For reasons you don't understand? Look, there's a difference between thinking they have a shot, and actually thinking they're the best team in the country. Coming off HUGE bowl wins, how can you claim they're better than the likes of Texas and Ohio State? That's nuts.

"Louisville was pegged high in 2005..."

Failed expectations is hardly a reason to rank a team high. True, some teams have rebounded after failing in a previous season. Then you have perrennial underachievers like VaTech and KState. That is NOT a reason to rank a team a pre-season. It's called viewing things through a selected lense. You're only seeing what you want to.

I know, I didn't say nor did I think it was the ONLY reason. But it's not even valid as a complimentary reason. It's not a valid reason at all. Like I said, when you say something like that, you're only seeing what you want to. You're only seeing the teams that underachieved the year before a national championship, when there are just as many that underachieved the year before having another season of underachieving. Underachieving is not a reason for prediciting a national champion, be it complimentary or primary.

I didn't critize you for picking Louisville because you're 16, I critized you because I thought it was a bogus #1. Still do. Besides, you lose more credibility as a Michigan fan then as a 16-year-old. :-)

lol...any time someone says "how dare you," it reminds me of that Will Farrell skit when he was on Weekend Update on SNL and had voice immodulation. That skit was hilarious.
