Why Would A-Rod Stay?

The back-and-forth between Scott Boras and the Yankees regarding a contract extension for Alex Rodriguez concluded, as expected, without an extension. It's been suggested that this was all a ploy by the Yankees to turn the fans against A-Rod, thus making the Yankees look better when they lose him to free agency. If that's true...where have the Yankees been the last few years? The fans were already against A-Rod. That exactly why he's going to leave, though it's not the only reason.

The fact is, A-Rod has a lot more to gain by leaving. Not only can he stick to the franchise that's gotten him booed and batted him 8th in the lineup of a series-clinching playoff game, but he stands to make at least an extra $5 million annually. There is no doubt that A-Rod can be baseball's first $30 million man if he opts out of his contract at the end of the season. He is only 31 and will have reached 500 career home runs by the end of the year (maybe by the end of the month). He's got a great chance to be the all-time home run leader by the end of his career (though we said the same thing about Ken Griffy Jr. You just never know.).

There are those who say that the Yankees should let him go and spend the $25 million on a couple of players, as they try to rebuild, but no so fast. The Rangers are paying $16 million each year of A-Rod's contract and that money will be gone if he opts out. This would be devastating to the Yankees, who will probably not make the playoffs as it is and certainly would not be remotely in playoff contention if not for A-Rod. Losing their best player and only have an extra $11 million to spend (even though we all know the Yankees can spend more than that) would be a huge blow to the once-dominant franchise.

Meanwhile, A-Rod can go to another city where he will be better appreciated and, who knows, maybe he'll even win. There will be pressure for him to win anywhere that he goes, but not like in New York, where it's been World Series or bust for the last several years. It will be, at first, a fairly painless separation. A-Rod will be glad to be gone and the Yankees fans will feel that they can win without him. They'll be in for a shock when they realize just how much better A-Rod is than Derek Jeter and how, if A-Rod couldn't carry their mediocre squad, Jeter certainly can't.

I don't buy into the "$30 million man" gimmick. I think it's Scott Boras just throwing out smoke. $30 MM is a huge chunk of most team's payrolls, and remember that the Red Sox wouldn't have taken A-Rod for $20 MM two years ago; the Mets have Wright and Reyes on the left side of the infield. That leaves who? The Angels, maybe the Dodgers or Giants, and the Rangers (who effectively get him at half-off). I can't imagine he'd sign with a team like the Orioles or Nationals, or that the Ichiro-strapped Ms would take him back. I'd bet on a six year, $150 MM deal, which is pretty much the same as he'd get if he stayed in the Bronx, kept performing, and got a three year extension.

You may not buy it, DNL, but a MLB owner will. Boras is throwing out figures, just like he did seven years ago. Owners will bite, just like they did then.

Yeah, then afterwards it is the same dumb owners that b*tch and moan about "going broke because of salary escalation" every time the CBA needs to be re-negotiated. These guys (in general) that own these baseball franchises are complete idiots.

Its called capitalism...Boras is just doing whatever it takes to get his client the most $$...of course, some of that is sneaky and underhanded...anti-capitalistic in its essence...

You have your figures backwards. Rangers are paying around $9M/yr, Yanks cover about $16M.

Do I? My bad. My point still holds though that the Yankees wouldn't have the full $25 million to spend.

I couldn't but laugh over that line about "how much better A-Rod is than Jeter." Fact is, Jeter is the best shortstop the Yanks have ever had, A-Rod is one of the best third basemen (though I'm not sure I'd take him over Nettles). It's hard to say one is that much better than the other; A-Rod gets the big hits but Jeter gets more hits altogether. I wouldn't say the Yanks have a better player currently than those two, and setting them against each other shows no idea of what the Yanks are as a team. Whatever they need to improve, those two have to be the nucleus f the team.

Fact is, A-Rod is much, much better than Jeter. Any statistic in the world (except BA) will tell you that.

"Any statistic in the world (except BA) will tell you that"? Well, look at career OBP. They are almost identical (Jeter is slightly better, .389 to A-Rod's .387). I would not say that that shows A-Rod is "much, much better"!

The number of girlfriends he has as well. Jeter has WAAAAAAAAAAY more. All A-Rod could get was a skanky whore...

Okay, fine...but A-Rod's career slugging percentage is more than 100 points higher. He's obviously better.

And I can't believe he has scored more than Jeter...

I said A-Rod gets the big hits. That shows in his slugging. But just because Jeter isn't a big home-run hitter doesn't mean he's not important to the Yankees' success (I'm talking about over time, not the Yankees' present standing)

Yeah, Jeter's a great player. I'm not arguing with you there. All I'm saying is that he isn't nearly as good as A-Rod.
