Why Soccer Could Be Big In The U.S.A.

Forget David Beckham coming to the Los Angeles Galaxy and to Major League Soccer.....

Never Mind the LA Galaxy defeating Pachuca in their Superliga opener last night at the Home Depot Center....

Never Mind FC Dallas and Chivas tying 1-1, with Chivas getting a goal that should have been whistled dead due to a handball.

The main story from Pizza Hut Park, Drew Moor getting a red card and starting a fight on the field in the 72 Minute of the Match.....

Now, he was elbowed by a Chivas defender, but the FC Dallas defender didn't back down. He stepped up and shoved him right back, starting a combustible meeting of the players that in the soccer sense was a fight during the match. (In hockey, this set of events would have only been awarded a two minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct).

Watch the recap (  http://youtube.com./watch?v=0EO-GeBG2DY) and wait till the end of the recap when the fun begins.

-Warning: The Clip is in Spanish as Telefutura broadcast the match. Thus, you will hear the play-by-play man going nuts on the two goals.

If you were at Pizza Hut Park, the crowd definitely woke up and cheered the lack of decorum on the pitch and saw a bit of emotion as the game wound down.....

Of Course, Drew Moor was red carded and will not be able to play in the Hoops next match on Saturday versus Pechuca. However, he probably ended a ton of respect from MLS players league wide and a ton of respect in his own locker room.

Plus, nothing brings in t.v. ratings like players going nuts on the field, no matter what network is covering the games...... What, you thought high scoring games would do that..... Please...... The NHL has been trying to do that for a few years and they still can't get that right.....

Huh? How could you make a statement like that? Soccer will never be big on the basis of we don't dominate it.

You don't dominate baseball (Cuba). You don't really dominate basketball. You dominate American Football, because you are the only ones that play it. You never dominated Ice Hockey. The sports you do dominate (Track & Field, Golf, Tennis) are waning in popularity. So I don't buy into that.

BINGO!! My dad said the same thing! Honestly, we never dominated golf. And I don't think the US has ever been to a cricket world cup.

No ... soccer's not big because it's fighting for real estate in an already-crowded sports landscape. Look at the countries that embrace soccer; there are few, if any, other sports to compete with. But in the U.S., we've got the NFL, NBA, MLB, college football and basketball, golf, NASCAR ... ever the NHL all taking the spotlight away from soccer. Add in the MLS, a second-rate soccer league when compared to the leagues of Europe and here's a sport that just barely registers in our consciousness.

With all the crap in other sports, the time is now. However I don't foresee soccer gaining that kind of popularity.

Honestly the thing that pisses me off the most about soccer is the guys faking the injuries, like at the end of that clip. Rolling around on the ground holding your leg to get a call then sprinting and skipping down the field a minute later.

There have been many times during soccer games that players appear to be getting shot at by unseen snipers in the stands. The clutching and grabbing is really excessive. But I don't think if it stopped soccer would be more popular in the US. But the embellishing certainly doesn't help much.

yeah, there are some actors in soccer. I think it's a lot like trying to pull an offensive foul in basketball - you exaggerate to draw the foul. Oh, and baseball has the biggest sissies, no doubt - i mean, how many players get injured pulling a hammy by stepping on first base at the wrong angle? haha

Does anybody understand the word "could" here?

I mean, If I wrote, "Soccer will absoultely become bigger then the NFL and here's why......", then you would have a point about bashing soccer's place in the United States.

But if you actually looked at that title (which judging by many of the comments here, most of you didn't), IYou thought that soccer would overtake everything in the same fashion as the Capital One Early Banking Goons....

Let's review something:

Other situations that could would be used correctly are: I could win the lottery.... I could quit my job.... I could stop submitting articles to ArmchairGM.... I could hire a goon to beat the crap out of all of you who didn't get my point... I could eat Cheetos all day.... I could buy a Beckham jersey.... I could go to jail....

You see, I could, but then again something else might happen too. Like me posting this comment and seeing how many you react (I'm guess bitching and moaning...)

Soccer (Futbol) could be bigger was a good title. I think you started rambling with that comment above. People will bash your article because they are not soccer fans. I find it to be an interesting article. I think soccer is getting more popular here in the U.S.

I for one am a huge soccer fan, and I think soccer is a little more popular. But the problem is, it's getting more popular, but that delivers zero success on the national teams and the Non-Toronto FC MLS teams.

It's not like he doesn't have a good point by saying soccer would be more popular if there were fights. Look at what the fastest sport in the U.S. right now is: UFC. Americans are simple-minded people.

To all of you non-soccer fans in the US, please don't watch the MLS because it is like watching paint dry since it is terrible soccer (this is coming from a D1 college player) My suggestion to you is to order Fox Soccer Channel and Gol TV and watch the EPL and La liga games which are great games to watch. They come on usually early mornings on weekends in season. Grab a beer and watch these great games at 8am and see what real soccer is like.

actually, i think this article means to say that soccer could be popular in the US based on the fact that MLS is getting passionate - players are getting into fights with teams from other leagues is a symptom of this passion - and not just any league, but the SuperLiga - which is kind of like USA vs. MEXICO where tensions are always high. There's no other sport that has the international flair, the my country vs. your country, kinda like what the Olympics used to be like but much, much better. --And it's PACHUCA not "Pechuca" good comment though--

I've watched the World Cup, supposedly the best of the best that soccer has to offer. It's intensely unwatchable on TV, one because the commentators are horrid, and two, the product is rather INTENSELY boring. Scoring is the thing for non-hockey-watching Americans, something high level soccer doesn't have.
