Why No Love For Wade Phillips?

by Coachcarpenter

If coaches are going to be ripped and fired for failure, they sure ought to get some credit for success. The best team in the NFC gets tons of publicity (Romo, T.O.), but none of it is directed at its coach.

Let me be the first to say it - Wade Phillips is doing as good of a job as any coach in the NFL this year.

I recently heard a few national commentators debating who should be NFL Coach of the Year and Wade Phillips name was never mentioned. Mike McCarthy, Bill Belichick, Romeo Crennel...but not Wade Phillips?

After watching the immensely talented Cowboys play slow, confused and unmotivated football under the legendary Bill Parcells, Wade Phillips has found the right balance between freedom and order to allow these Pokes to excel. Dallas has been absolutely terrific this season - scoring points at will and actually stopping people on defense from time to time.

Forget for a second that Wade Phillips is the coach. If I told you that the Dallas Cowboys were 11-1, that Terrell Owens was having an all-world season without being a distraction or cancer, that Tony Romo had emerged in his second season as a starter into a Top 5 quarterback, that DeMarcus Ware and Greg Ellis each have 10 sacks, that the Pokes have 1,000 yards more offense than their opponents, twice as many quarterback sacks, 20 more touchdowns, and a +7 turnover margin for the season, wouldn't you expect the coach of the NFL's signature franchise to be getting a sniff of recognition?

So why isn't Wade Phillips? When the Cowboys are discussed this season, the order of priority is Terrell Owens, Tony Romo, Jerry Jones, Marion Barber, DeMarcus Ware, Patrick Crayton, Terence Newman, Tank Johnson, Roy Williams, then maybe Phillips? Wait, I forgot right guard Leonard Davis. Seriously, Bill Parcells still gets more attention in Big D than Wade Phillips.

It is time for that to stop. He may not be flashy. His hiring did not exactly thrill the fanbase. But the proof, my friends, is in the pudding. 11-1. The only loss is to the undefeated Patriots. This season, the Cowboys shut down Adrian Peterson, knocked out Brett Favre and totally confused Eli Manning. Okay, that last one isn't especially impressive, but the overall product has been. The Cowboys are having a historic season - one not matched by Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson or Bill Parcells - and Wade Phillips ought to get much of the credit.

I know, I know - the Cowboys are loaded with talent and Phillips is basically just standing there watching it. Really? There isn't a difference between the way this team plays vs. last year's team? The offense is explosive - last year it was plodding. The defense gets after people - last year it waited, reacted and gave up points. The team this year seems to be enjoying football - last year it seemed like Sunday was an unenjoyable occupation.

What is the difference between this year and last year? Wade Phillips. Jason Garrett deserves some recognition as well, but it starts with the head coach. If the Cowboys were 6-6 right now with Romo struggling, T.O. whining, and the defense stinking, Phillips would be burned in effigy in Dallas.

Instead, the Cowboys are 11-1, already in the playoffs and the favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Wade Phillips ought to be given the credit he deserves for the job he has done this year.

I'm not a Dallas fan but have to admit that Wade Phillips has accomplished far more than I ever expected. He deserves consideration for Coach of the Year.

Sadly, I do think that has everything to do with it. I know that everything still comes back to the head coach and how he's able to run things, but Dallas has been driven by their offense, and Phillips is supposed to be a defensive guru. But we really haven't seen the defensive improvements he was supposed to bring. If the defense were playing better, Phillips would probably be getting more credit.

Youre both correct. Phillips has done a good job, but not getting in the way, and being the good face, and manager of the team. Jason Garett is the one who stirs the pot and makes the magic work.

Jason Garett has the best of both words. He gets to be in charge of running a high powered offense (and receive the rightful kudos) while any potential dust up (which has not happened) involving T.O. will be blamed on Phillips.

I agree. Phillips deserves credit and strong consideration for Coach of the Year. For those pundits that say the team was loaded before he got there and that anyone could win with that team, consider what has happened in San Diego this year. The team is all but the same except for the coaches. Way to go Norv Turner et. al.

Personally I think Phillips is a pansy he inherited a Superbowl team that Bill Parcells pounded into submission, I think if he coached any other team thats not the Colts, Patriots, or Packers then he suffers big time

I don't think this Cowboys team is even thinking about last season with Parcells.

I suppose that's possible, but the fact remains that with Parcells the team went 9-7, blew the NFC East and choked in the playoffs, and with Wade they are 11-1 for the first time in franchise history. I wasn't thrilled with the hire in the spring, but Wade has been just what this team needed.

For the first time in his career Parcells left a team in tact when he left. Every other coach taking over from a Parcells administration was left a disaster, a team that was held together because of Parcells and that was actively imploded by Parcells. That is what I expected from Dallas this year. But somehow he did something different, he left coaching for good and left the team in great condition. This team might not be 11-1 this year under Bill but they sure as hell would be no worse than 9-3. Wade gets no credit because he inherited a young team that got used to winning, and you add that to the contrast in coaching styles and you get what's happening with the cowboys. It won't last, it cannot, especially with TO involved. So enjoy it while it's happening!

I'm not sure they would be 9-3 with Parcells. He severely limited both the offense and defense in his time in Dallas, while Phillips has implemented an aggressive D and allowed Garrett to run an attacking offense. Neither of these were the case under Parcells.

In addition, Parcells handled "the player" all wrong, likely causing a blow up this season. But Phillips (and Garrett) has done a masterful job with TO. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for him to explode again.

I'm the first to admit their record is due in large part to a cupcake schedule--this is clearly not the best Cowboys team of all time, despite their record--but Phillips is doing a better job than Parcells would have with this team. It's possible they could be 9-3 under Big Bill, but they would finish the season losing 3 our of 4 in December like they did every other year under him to finish 10-6, blow the NFC East lead to the Giants, and lose in the first round again.

Bill Parcells? Good riddance.

I agree that he limited TO, but I don't know about the explosion this year. He DID lead the league in TD catches last year. He had a ton of drops, but he also played most of the season with a broken hand.
