Why Louisville, Tennessee, and Pittsburgh May Surprise

One year ago, preseason magazines across the country picked Louisville and Tennesse to contend for the national title. Pittsburgh was also pegged as a top 25 team. However, these high expectations were not met, as Tennesse and Pitt eached finished 5-6. Louisville did finish 9-3, but many thought they could go 12-0.

Now why will these teams surprise? Thats because they don't have all of these expectations on their shoulders. Nobody is expecting these guys to contend for a title, with maybe the exception of Louisville. The highest I've seen the Cards ranked is #11, still out of the top 10. Few people have even pegged Pitt and Tennesse to win their own conference. How is it that they can do much better?

In 2004, people thought West Virginia could 11-0 and to the title game as a result of their weak schedule. They however, failed to meet these expectations. Then in 2005, with Louisville, expected to go 11-0, West Virginia went 11-1 with a Sugar Bowl win over Georgia.

Can you see the pattern? When a team doesn't live up to their expectations the previous year they will often come back the next year and meet them. Thats one of the reasons why Louisville will be in the title game and Tennesse and Pitt should have great years.

Yeah, but schools like Northwestern, East Carolina, and Baylor don't have large expectations this year either. Does that mean those three schools are going to contend for a title also?

That was stupid to say, those schools don't have championship talent, like Panthers, vols, and cards.

Championship Talent?! I don't think so.

I agree, those teams don't have championship talent. At least, I'm not sold on them having championship talent. Yes, WVU had two freshman break out for surprise seasons last year. But, it could have just been catching lightning in a bottle. Kind of like Bell down at Georgia Tech and how he never reached expectations. I have serious doubts about WVU's passing game, and I don't see a team winning the championship without a good passing game. Louisville seems to be perpetual underachievers (mostly because they never have any defense to speak of), and the Vols have even more issues than either WVU or Louisville. Those teams might surprise, but they won't be competing for the national title.

The SEC is arguably the toughest conference in college football this year, Tennessee doesn't stand much of a chance in my opinion. Louisville and Pitt both play in the Big East, so they both can't be that great, with only one BCS bowl bid going to that conference for the rest of eternity. Pitt might be bowl eligible, but that's far as I would predict them improving.

While I hope you are right, one example doesn't make a pattern.

Would you say that Michigan would be another surprise team, following this pattern?

I do think Michigan will be a surprise team, but not because of this pattern. Patterns mean nothing. For each team that's thrived because of lowered expectations, I'll name you one that's thrived because of raised expectations. It's all about the team and what they need to win. I think Michigan will surprise because Hart and Henne will overcome their sophmore slumps to play to their true potential. I was never terribly impressed by Henne (he benefitted greatly from Braylon Edwards' athleticism), but I think he's good enough to win if he just doesn't try to do too much. Their defense should also rebound this year.
