Why Johan Santana is having a great year.

Everyone knows that Johan Santana is a 2nd half pitcher and chances are he will be once again this year. But when you look at his stats this year, you see a record of 7-6. If you are like some media members and baseball fans, you say to yourself "Whats wrong with Johan?" The answer is nothing. He is actually having a great season. This is another case showing the complete uselessness of the W/L record for pitchers.

These are the stats for Santana through June 23 of the season from the past 4 years.

2004: 5-4, 4.61, 15 HRs
2005: 7-3, 3.45, 12 HRs
2006: 8-4, 2.75, 12 HRs
2007: 7-6, 2.91, 14 HRs

So you look at those stats and wonder why he is 7-6. Simple. The Twins offense sucks. In 14 starts, the Twins offense has scored 3 or less runs 10 times.

I was actually going to post something like this. Good job, man. Yes, Johan does REALLY well, and I mean REALLY well in the second half. He has maybe 1-3 losses in the second half? I'm not sure, but it's pretty low, and he's almost unhittable when he pitches at that time. Not only does he do well, but the entire roster does much better as well. Why do you think the Twins are able to say that they were 1st place in the AL Central of 2006? Even with Liriano's injury last year, they were able to come back from what? 15 games or so? We all know that the twins are comeback team. And you're right, CWY, the W-L Column is overrated, and I've said it over and over. A pitcher's win-loss column is more of how well the team does, not the pitcher. That's why we have quality starts.

Hear, hear. Good article. Especially the part of the Twins offense sucking.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that the Twin offense sucks right now. The Twins always get off to a pretty slow start and stay at about .500 until the end of June (which is around now). They've lost a lot of close games, even without Liriano. Mauer has been injured, and Morneau has been though a slump, but he's put a lotta power in the power. The bullpen is the major issue in my opinion with the Twins. Everything else seems to be fine...

The Twins either score 1 run or 8 runs when Johan pitchers. Its usually the first though.

That's why he's going to join the Yankees next, so he can fix his record so he can win 20 games every season.
