Why I don't want A-Rod on my team

by Hoops2662

Ok, here it is in black and white. I don't want Alex Rodriguez on my team.

Period.

And here's why... point by point:

  1. What has he won? Now heading towards his fourth team, the Mariners and Rangers were all better when he left them. As for the Yankees, you can make the case that if they use their money wisely in some pitching, they will be a more productive squad too. Can you really say that he'll make the World Champion Red Sox more improved? I say not.
  2. Can you justify $30 million dollars coming to Boston? In the business model the Sox look at in addition to baseball ops, A-Rod will not put one more fanny in the Fenway seats. It will not draw one more viewer to NESN than say, Clay Buchholz, who will cost you roughly $29.5 million less.
  3. Is A-Rod more clutch than Mike Lowell? Needless to say, I tend to believe that when you need a run in say, game 4 of a big series, Lowell gets it in, like he did in games two and four of the World Series. The same can not be said of Mr. Rodriguez, who as we all remember, failed to drive home a run from third base in game 4 of the ALCS vs. the Sox that would've sealed their fate and created no such comeback for the Idiots.
  4. Respect. First off, why was A-Rod not in Denver Sunday night to collect his award from Hank Aaron? Prince Fielder was there. It was because Alex knew his agent would leak the news that A-Rod was opting out of his Yankee deal later that night and he didn't want to face the music in person. There's no respect for his fellow teammates, fellow teams or the game itself.
  5. Me, me, me, me, me! It's always been just about A-Rod and never about the team.
  6. Would you rather have Mike Lowell and a quality pitcher for $30 million or would you rather have A-Rod? Pitching and clutch hitting wins championships. Two in the last four years for Boston if you're couting at home.

In all, A-Rod just rubs me the wrong way. He might have the records and be the best regular season player on the planet. But as for me, I'd rather enjoy the ride to another title without him.

AND

A lotta publicity, a player with a bad reputation, and a worse team chemistry, 30+ million dollars, and no championship.

I think I'll pass on AROD, thank you very much.

for me, it does a little bit, but not entirely. I'll be the first guy in line to throw Lugo under the bus (although he did play much better in the WS), but the money just isn't worth it for Boston, who are at the top of baseball without him. I'd much rather take that money, use part of it to resign Lowell, maybe acquire some depth, and shore up the front end of the bullpen.

GREAT article I totally agree...A-Rod is not a winner. Leave it to Alex Rodriguez and his scumbag agent to usurp the game's biggest event and announce their plans to "opt out" of his contract...If Rodriguez had any balls at all, he would have called Boras and said, "You know what...I owe the Yankees a title. They rescued me from that dregs-of-a-franchise in Texas and brought me to the Big Apple for the specific purpose of delivering them a World Series title and I didn't fulfill that obligation...so call the Yankees and tell them I'll be back to honor my contract." But A-Rod doesn't have any heart. Or balls. And far be it for the client to actually tell the agent how things are going to go in the process, right?

I was really fooled. I thought (despite everyone else who correctly predicted that A-Rod would not re-sign with the Yanks) that he would eventually sign, that he was just playing a bit of a game to get some more money. He had seemed to me to be much more of a team player (moving to 3rd so Jeter could play his position, for example). up until the day he said no to the Yanks, I thought he really wanted to play for the Yanks, (after all, he was born in NYC) and just was doing what they all do, trying to get a bit more money by threatening to leave. But, you know, maybe he'll come back (Clemens did, Pettitte did, Wells did!) After all, who but Steinbrenner really has enough money to pay him?

Yeah, it'd be great if A-Rod could pitch and play 3rd base at the same time. Of course, he'd probably screw that up too. What a loser. He's not the best offensive player in baseball or anything.

Alex Rodriguez > any other player in MLB, and it's a joke how maliciously he's attacked by everyone. Whose fault is it that the Yankees lost this year? A-Rod, even though Chien-Ming Wang lost 2 games for them and Derek Jeter had inferior numbers. It's always A-Rod's fault.

The wonderful and brilliant team guy that is A-Hole sure made a huge difference in Texas and Seattle also. Look at all those championship banners fluttering on those stadium roofs as well....

It's not like Tom Hicks had to pay him $252 million or be jailed. He overpaid by tens of millions of dollars instead of investing in things he actually needed, like pitching.

You can't win a championship with 1 player. Barry Bonds never won a championship and his numbers are among the best of all time.

It has yet to be proven that paying A-Hole an obscene amount of money has ever generated into a World Series Championship.

That is fact. And it is a rather important one for any team stupid enough to negotiate with Scott Boras.

Barry Bonds never won a WS? Go figure. Just lends to proof that great individual talent at the expense of team chemistry wins nothing.

Even though I agree with you Tmil, there's one thing: when a team asks him for 30 million dollars and he declines, that means that the player thinks he's worth more than 30 million dollars. Would anyone other than A-Rod NOT accept a contract like that? It's ridiculous. Sure, ARod carried his team to the playoffs, but it's all about money to ARod, from what I see. It's not about playing the game. Look at the unselfish guys like Tony Gwynn, who could've been stars getting 3 times the amount they made per year. BUT, Tony Gwynn stayed in SD. Why? Cuz he loved SD and loved the game of baseball. Money had nothing to do with his career, which is why I respect Tony Gwynn so much.

Hoops2662, excellent article. I cannot blame you for you position. Who the hell wants A-Rod after the s**t he pulled last night.

Scott Boras is the one jackass you can pin all the outrageous econmonics of baseball on, maybe even professional sports. David Falk is another superagent that does the same for the NBA. I don't blame A-Rod for the disgusting timing of the announcement he disgracefully opted out of his contract, I blame Boras 100%.

A-Rod betrayed all New York City baseball fans for his decision. He obviously has such a disconnect with the public on the realities of making a living, it's beyond a joke. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, you greedy f'en bastard.

Agreed.

<sarcastic>It must be tough to already be the highest paid player in MLB history and feel the urge to squeeze a few more bucks out of some sap team.</sarcastic>

As Bud Fox once asked Gordon Gekko, "How much is enough?" Well Alex - how much more dough do you really need? But thanks anyways for clarifying why you play the game. That was made quite clear from last night's bullsh*t shenanigans.

And after producing exactly 0 championships with the so-called highest profiled team in perhaps all of professional sports, it only makes sense to show what a super-duper team guy A-Hole truly is by having his agent preempt the friggin' World Series with a declaration of his client's free agency.

A-Hole might be a great individual talent on the ball diamond, but the guy absolutely sucks at the concept of anything remotely related to the word "TEAM".

A'Rod's balls must be gigantic, because it's seems like everyone's on them. A-Rod's gigantic contract was the result of Tom Hicks resembling James Dolan. And let's be honest. A-Rod was treated like aboslute crap when he was here from the moment he came here. He could do no right. You think that he had any control over how and when the news about him gets passed out. Similar to how much control he had when the news media was following him and his wife around. You think A-Rod has any control over what Scott Boras does!! Scott Boras is a brainwasher by nature. That's his job. It's unbelieveable the crap that he catches. And I love how MLB is on it's high horse again after trying to keep the steroid scandal under raps.

Thank you Hoops2662. The last thing I'd want is to have AROD sign for the Red Sox, and I'm sure every baseball fan says that to his team. He is extremely selfish, rejecting a 30 million dollar contract is absolutely riduclous. He thinks he is ALL THAT, but I'll tell you what: after the regular season, he's useless. He hasn't won any championships, is not a team player (even though he constantly says that it's all about the team), and doesn't seem to care about anything or anyone but himself.

Don't want A-Rod on my Braves. But am wondering why they would let Renteria go who has some power and drives in a lot of runs and are going to let Yunel Escobar take over at shortstop who has never hit many home runs in a season or drive in more than 50 runs in minors or majors...maybe they were really only making room for A-Rod to play shortstop...Bobby Cox is too smart to let Escobar take Renteria's place if he had any say in the deal unless he knew there was a chance they might sign A-Rod but Braves have let a lot of good players go in free agency years so they wouldn't have to pay big salaries to those players and can't see them changing now...but after last season's pitching woes they might spring for whatever money it takes to sign Glavine.
