Why I Hate Carlos Beltran

Last year in my Fantasy Baseball draft I had the 8th overall pick. With it I selected Carlos Beltran who had just come off a season in which he had hit 38 HR and stolen 42 bases. At this point in his career Beltran had posted 4 consecutive seasons of over 20 homeruns and 30 stolen bases (with the last two seasons being over 40 SB). He looked like a stud fantasy player and a good anchor for my keeper league team. Then came 2005.
All Mr. Beltran did was pull a complete 180 degree turn on me. In 2005 he hit for a paltry .266 BA with 16 HR, 83 R, 78 RBI, 56 BB, 17 SB, a .330 OBP and .414 SLG. All well below his career averages. I spent entire months of last season cursing his name. I cursed Omar Minaya for bringing him to New York where it looked as if he couldn't handle the pressure. For all purpsoses, Carlos Beltran was dead to me as soon as the season ended.
Naturally this year I avoided Beltran like the plague when draft day came around. I thought, "Hey, let some other sucker make that mistake this year". Beltran fell from the 8th selection overall to the 34th overall selection in round 3. Apparently many others shared my distrust. Apparently we were all wrong.
All Beltran has done this year is post a .285 BA with 19 HR (already more than last year and top 10 in the NL), 52 R (top 6 NL), 55 RBI (top 6 NL), 40 BB, 12 SB (top 15 NL), a .395 OBP, and .620 SLG. He may be one of the biggest causes for the Mets resurgence and constant headaches of fantasy owners everywhere. Why do you torment us so? The really fun part, especially for me, comes when you project his numbers out for the rest of the season. 33 HR, 91 R, 96 RBI, 70 BB, and 21 SB. Or exactly where he should have been last year given his career averages. Gee, thanks Carlos.
So from myself, and I'm sure many, many, many others, here's to hoping you pull a hammy or roll your ankle. Atleast that way we all won't feel so stupid.
