Why Does the NFL Have a 40-Second Play clock?

3

by user Pnatt

In American football, the offensive team must run a play within 25 seconds of the referee whistling the play in – except in the National Football League where teams have 40 seconds from the end of the previous play.

Why does the NFL have the extra 15 seconds?

The play clock gets longer from high school to college to the pros. I'm not positive, but I'd guess it's because the higher you get up in the game, the more complicated the plays get to call and set up, the more audibles (including hot routes) the QB makes at the line, etc.

Thats right cpcp, its longer so coaches and players have ab it more time to gameplan, and get out the lengthy verbage that is used in NFL football.

It's specifically 40 seconds for reasons of national urity - ALL Americans are sworn to secrecy over this and anyone who gives you an answer will be tarred and feathered...

Television. 25 seconds isn't long enough for the TV producers to show replays and allow Madden to draw on the screen and say "Boom!"

The REAL truth is... because supposedly there's so much time 'wasted' in baseball standing around, fixing batting gloves, talking with faces covered by gloves, scratching crotches, spitting, etc. that the NFL realized the time they spend standing around doing nothing was greater but could be made to seem like less by attaching a clock to the proceedings.

Or it is because everyone is so dumb that no one could understand the coach unless there was a 40 second play clock

It would be more exciting if it was 25 seconds. QBs would have to call their own plays. The game would flow easier. At the end of a game, three kneels from the 2 minute drill wouldn't win the game - it would allow for more chance of a comeback too. It would reduce the need of the running game though.

What do you mean by it would reduce the need of the running game? Just curious.

The running game is only used to run the clock down. Since they will only be able to run down 62.5% of the time they would normally be able to run down, it would become 37.5% less effective. Not many teams set out at the start of the game to run more times than they pass in a game.

Geez I didn't know that. I know that the clock stops on every incomplete pass and the clock doesn't stop on a run, but I didn't know that passes were more common! I thought they were like 50-50.

It makes sense. A pass is the most immediate way to score. It probably is 50-50ish until about 3 minutes to go in a half, when pretty much every down is a pass. Because they are passing, that could be an extra 10 "passes". Whilst they may not set out to run, if a few runs are more successful, then you obviously turn to the run more often. Passing is generally the Number 1 option. Running is Number 2. Hence a QB tends to be more important than an RB. Usually. A few break this rule. Miami Dolphins when they had Ricky Williams in 2004, e.g.
