Why Do We Crave Football So Much?

by LastRow

Does the question really have an answer? Is it really explainable? With so many different sports out there, why as a sports culture do we love the pigskin so much? Our love and passion for football runs deeper than what we hold for our ball and chain, but why? How do weekends in the fall differ from weekends right now? Why has the pigskin overtaken baseball as America’s past time?

As a sports culture, once the Super Bowl has come and gone we all go into a five month long drought suffering from sports depression and really don’t begin to snap out of it to around this time of the year. See the Super Bowl is the only event where it doesn’t matter who’s playing for Lombardi’s Trophy…Hell, it doesn’t even matter if one is a sports fan or not, (isn’t that sick, not being a sports fan!) everybody comes together to watch. Thus, having the label an "unofficial holiday". The World Series can’t do this, neither can the two finals…NBA & Stanley Cup. And all of those other pasty, Waffle House sports…Well, they’re just that!

Even with the Bengal Jail Team, Pacman’s troubles and "Doggate" written and produced by Michael Vick, the NFL’s black eye, well, it all seems to fall on deaf ears. Should we hear it over and over and yes, it’s a PR nightmare, but honestly we don’t care…Perhaps bad choice of words there considering the dog fighting, but nothing can detour us from the pigskin. Now this is definitely a far cry from what the majority thinks about all the negative pub that baseball has received for their "Roid Raging" sport. So again, I’ll pose a question…Why do we tend to look past things on the football field, but ready to chop off Bud Selig’s head with an ax? Probably he’s a passive on with no grapes! So then can the NFL really do anything wrong to detour viewership?

The love just isn’t for the NFL game…Most, I being one of them, prefer the college game better. Could have something to do with those lovely co-eds? Actually, it could even be the high school brand. All over this country on Friday nights in small towns people gather around to cheer on the local football team. Not baseball, not basketball…The one consist in this entire genre are those pigskins that fly. It’s virtually unexplainable as to why we are a sports culture addict to them…If somebody knows the answer, well he/she knows the answer to a lot of questions, such as…"Why is the sky blue and the grass is green?" "Why are blondes more fun?" "Why do we prefer Playboy Playmates over gals pushing maximum destiny, but at three in the morning in doesn’t matter?" "Why does Beano Cook have eight chins?" "Why is it always Denny’s over Waffle House & IHOP at three in the morning?"

The one thing I do know is football is the only sport that anyone of us can sit on the couch all day watching as may games as we can on the boob tube. We crave for this and embrace it! No other sport allows for this! We don’t have a burning desire to watch four or five basketball games in a given day, (excluding the NCAA Tourney, which is a whole separate entity) hockey, well, do they even play five games a day? Nobody knows? Baseball…Well, forget that shit! Rather play touchy feely with those gals pushing maximum destiny!

So what’s the explanation? Can it really be explained as to why the sports culture revolves around the pigskin and fall?

Vote in LastRowSports.com new Pick’em Poll in honor of football season, which asks a very difficult question and one everybody needs to put that grapes on the table and ask themselves… "How do you like your Football Flavor?" We are referring to college or pro of course! And you thought deciding how to throw away $20 in a strip club was hard…NO PUN INTENED!

I think a good starting point is that games are played once a week and every single game is televised. Each game in football is an event, and the general public takes notice every week. If you throw in the natural excitement that a football game has, it's easy to see why its America's sport.

I crave football because I know for six saturdays and one monday night this fall I will be able to sit in a stadium packed with 80,000 of my closest friends for one last time. College football, and tailgating college football in the south is amazing. I wish I could go to school forever.

Your article is right, it is hard to explain. I think part of it is there are so many surprises every year (Marques Colston, the rest of the Saints, Frank Gore, etc.) that we can easily embrace and fall in love with. The idea that a team or player can come out of nowhere is very appealing. The fact that it gets played only once a week has something to do with it too. Also, you will find no other place with players better than in the United States, unlike in the three other major sports where there are other international leagues; there is no doubt that these are the finest football players in the world.

It's weird I liked Bledsoe so much, he never had an oh-my-God-you're-amazing season. I guess it was because of his arm, which is all my dad ever talked about when he talked about Drew.

Hahaha. I have to say my absolute favorite guy from the old days was Coates. For the sole reason Chris Berman referred to him as Ben Winter Coates. I used to think Berman was the funniest man alive. My how the mighty have fallen.

i don't have that

i do remember when the eagles had this guy named Tim Hauck...a heavy hitting safety...came out of nowhere and was pretty friggin' good for a few years...

he's famous for one thing in philly though...ending michael irvin's career

I also remember Mike Zordich...now he was badass...my guys are usually safeties...

Slade was great too. And Dave Meggett! Oh my God that guy was fun to watch! I also have a thing for safeties. Rodney Harrison is a beast, my second favorite player on the Pats behind Tom. Lawyer Milloy was my boy before he got traded and now finds himself on the least attractive franchise in the entire league (Falcons).

you guys remind me of a game we play up here...all of my friends and i used to play madden...way back in the day....like 94, 95, 96, 97 style madden on sega...so we used to play this game, called the "stan humphries game" which is name players who were relevant on teams randomly, but you would have no idea who they are now...stan humphries, being a prime example, QBed the chargers to the 94 superbowl...and got crushed by the 9ers... My personal favorite is Danny Kanell (or however its spelled)

where do i start besides him being a douche, that fact that he's a cheater or that he's among the dirtiest players around... Lets see, he's been voted...by his peers!...as the dirtiest player in the league...he once went helmet to helmet with jerry friggin' rice...among others...i remember a dirty hit or ward 2 or 3 years ago...i've seen a ton, even in san diego...he's just a very dirty player...and IMO, doesn't play the game right...which as you can tell, is a big deal for me...

I'll admit, I have not seen a lot of him from his San Diego days. All I know is that since he's been in New England, he has been a fiery leader, the rock of the secondary and a great teammate. Besides, I like my guys a little dirty ;)

Why are we questioning why people love football?? It has everything we love-- sports, voilence, beer, cheerleaders, food, friends--- people get hurt, we get drunk, eat some bad food, party our ass off with friends, and pass out afterwards-- it's the best god damn time a married man can have once a week, (and on Monday).

i understand why we love football... but i don't understand why this country is absolutely obsessed with football. As soon as the season ends we're breaking down who's the favorite for next year. Then we're breaking down each teams strengths and weaknesses and it's still MAY! Call me in September or mid August through the super bowl and I'll throw my Giants jersey on, watch the game and root as hard as any other fan, but in February through early August (draft excluded) i don't want to hear it.
