Why Do Forward Passes Exist?

Seriously, why are quarterbacks allowed to throw the ball forward, but other players can't. QBs should get a Personal Foul for throwing the ball. And why the heck can't players besides the goalie in soccer use their hands? Come on, these two sports are going to start losing fans if they don't change. They have already lost one, me!

What I want to know is, What's up with all these sports having these so-called "runs" and "points" and "goals"? Doesn't having these point systems make it too easy to WIN? Gosh!

Any player that is eligible to touch the ball (any non O-lineman I believe) can throw the ball behind the line of scrimmage (hence, the half-back option or even WR option/Antwaan Randel-El). No player, not even the quarterback, can throw forward beyond the line of scrimmage (see Brett Favre).

That's not very clear, should have read "can throw forward while behind the line..."

As a Steelers fan, I LOVE when the runningback or receiver throws the ball. With Randle El and Hines Ward (former QBs), Pittsburgh always had great options for trick plays. The Bus even threw a TD or two.

My post was satirical or the original poster? I was just trying to answer the question.

Okay, it's to do with the games roots. It came from Rugby Union, in which you cannot pass forwards. When we brought the game to the US, as ever you put your own little spin on it. And so, the QB (the Rugby equivalent to a scrum half) threw the ball forwards. Initially, a QB couldn't, but the game attracted little interest. The forward pass was brought in to make the game more exicting to the US audience.

So, it's only one forward pass per play. Other players can throw the ball forwards, e.g. a HB or WR, as long as there hasn't been a forward pass on the play already, or the ball has gone over the line of scrimmage. So, a QB could legally hand off to a RB who throws forward.
