Why Did The Titans Trade Billy Volek?

9
Vote

by user Joebook

In case you've missed the news, Billy Volek was traded to the San Diego Chargers for an undisclosed draft pick. Several news sources report that it was either a 5th or 6th round pick. This begs the question -- Why would the Tennessee Titans move the best QB on their team right now?

The Titans drafted Vince Young, and refuse to start him, even as their season heads down the toilet. I know it's only week 3, but let's face it -- the Titans are going nowhere.

Many members of the Titans organization were irritated when Coach Jeff Fisher brought in Kerry Collins to start, only a few days before the opener. Volek performed well when named the starter last season after Steve McNair's injury, and was thought to be holding the job until Vince Young was ready, possibly the 2007 season.

That being said, why not keep Volek, dump Collins and start Young?

I am still curious as to why the Raiders didn't trade for him.

If they didn't want Kerry Collins, why would they want the guy backing him up? The Raiders may be dumb, but they're not stupid... wait, maybe they are... may...be... they... are...

Bigger question... How's come MROE teams didn't want him?? Occulms Razor says Volek in fact, sucks and everyone has figured it out but you, Joebook... If you can't start for the Titans, and if no other team offers better than a 5th or 6th rounder for you, you're NOT that good.

Collins is definitely better than Volek. I try to rate the players out of 100, a la Madden, and I'd give Volek about 75, and Collins about 80. Young is 70 IMO, but will improve. Collins is getting on a bit, and could retire in two-three years, by which time Young will be more than ready.

you're right... I haven't figured it out yet. There are at least 5 teams that Volek could be starting for right now, and the Titans are one of them. I just don't understand why they would trade him after Collins has been the worst QB in the NFL the first two weeks.

Then why DIDN'T those other 4 teams go after him? A 5th or 6th rounder isn't much to give up for a 'starting quarterback' as you call him... They get paid LOTS of money to figure out who's good and who isn't. Volek's window may have passed, maybe he's still good enough to contribute, maybe he was hitting on Jeff Fisher's wife? We'll never know...

dude... it's just my opinion. I believe Volek is better than Losman, Kitna, Brad Johnson, Simms, and whoever the Raiders and Chiefs are trotting out there right now. He's thrown 517 career passes, which can be considered about a full season. He has completed 60.3% of those, with 26TD against 13INT, and has more than 3500 yards. Why didn't other teams pursue him? I don't know... but they should have.

Wow, you think Billy Volek is better than Brad Johnson?

I'm basing my thoughts on who I would rather have as a starter. I've never been a Brad Johnson fan, and he's 38 years old. I can't knock him too much because he's 2-0 right now, but I'd rather have Volek.

Why do the Chargers want him? They have two QBs on the active roster and one on the scout team, although Rivers has the only game experience out of the three.

27-0 and 40-7. It doesn't seem like they're in enough trouble to be scrambling to bring in a veteran QB.

They beat two bad teams, but they were supposed to win and they did convincingly. They'll have a much tougher time with Baltimore in week 4.

I don't think the Titans could find a situation in which Volek would be happy so they just got rid of the bad apple as soon as they could.

Does this question really matter? For a few seasons now, it looks like someone spent $80 dollars putting this Titans team together. Vince Young should develop into a good quarterback... go with him, and surround him with some talent.

I think the Titans would rather have Young learning from Collins. They obviously aren't going anywhere this season and don't really need three capable quarterbacks. Since Collins is more experienced and has had more NFL success, he seems better fit to train an up-and-coming QB.

simple, its a good move. They cant win, so they want Young to learn in the best way possible, and with McNair gone, its by throwing him into the Fray

PLus, Volek has gotten the reputation as a malcontent. Alot of teams these days are not tolerating that no matter what they have to give up to get rid of a guy.

I just read this on ESPN.com. Fisher said that Volek lied to him this spring and that he threw his team under the bus. I'm assuming by that, he referred to his request for a trade when the Titans got Collins. I still don't know what the lie is. Fisher isn't normally one to call out players like this. Whatever Volek did, he must have done it right. Looks to me like he crossed the line from malcontent into something a lot worse.
