Why Boxing is falling apart

Just tonight the replay of Mayweather-Hatton was on HBO, I watched it after hearing some good things about the fight and hearing about the great atmosphere. I must admit watching the fight this may have been the best atmosphere I've seen in any sporting event in my life. The English fans completely changed the fight, they brought passion for one fighter, not normally seen in any type of American fighting. The chants, the songs, the energy could be felt even watching the replay; you were drawn to the screen just to see what would happen next.

Heres the problem, as great as the atmosphere was, the fight was typical boxing and shows why people are drawn towards the action packed Mixed Martial Arts. In the first 5 rounds it was a one sided affair, and no it wasn't one sided like the judges all posted on their cards. Mayweather may have won a round or 2, and yet 2 judges somehow had Mayweather ahead in some fights by 4 rounds to 1 or 3 rounds to 2. Yet watching the replay you see that Hatton clearly is in control of the fight and dictating the pace.

The first 5 rounds were a joke everytime Hatton got close Mayweather would hold him so no punches could be thrown slowing the fight and just wasting time. The Judge warned Mayweather countless times in the first 5 rounds, and yet not once was he penalized. It seemed like everytime Hatton was doing something Mayweather would just grab him to stop everything. This shows whats wrong with boxing, if even once or twice the Ref just simply says "1 point deduction Mayweather" that changes the fight. Hatton should have already been ahead and give him another point advantage its a totally different fight. MMA does not allow its fighters to just sit there and delay the fights; they force them up if they do nothing on the ground and they take away points if the fighter just runs away. If boxing learns from this then maybe, it will become more action packed and more interesting.

The final problem I had in the fight took place in the 6th round. The other thing throught the first 5 rounds that I did not mention was that the times Mayweather missed the grab on Hatton he would curl up and duck down to try and get hit in the back of the head. The whole time he just hid and curled up, boxing takes away points for hitting people in the back of the head, so Hatton couldn't do anything even though it was his opponents fault that he got hit in the back of the head. In the 6th round this issue came to its head when Mayweather ducked down and backed through the ropes, Hatton threw a punch that actually hit the rope then glanced the back of Mayweather's head. Hatton was deducted a point in that round, another round which he actually should have won yet the judges had Mayweather win.

All and all it was the greatest atmosphere for a sporting event I've seen, but the fight did not live up to the atmosphere. The fight continued to show why Boxing is a coming apart and the seams and MMA is growing.

After 6 rounds the judges had the Mayweather ahead at least 4 rounds to 2 with a deduction of 1 point for Hatton. The problem is after 6 rounds Hatton should have been ahead at least 4 rounds to 2, with a deduction of 1 point on Mayweather for holding.

Thanks again Boxing for having your biggest fight of the year turn me away towards UFC.

As an MMA journalist/enthusiast, thank you for calling it MMA and not UFC. You spared my brain from getting hit with a frying pan, courtesy my right hand

Yah too often its all bunched together, there are different things and different styles. UFC is the main thing but there are good fighters and fights in the others like WEC.

Good article. I do prefer MMA to boxing. Plus, MMA is safer.

Its truely a shame what has happened to boxing. I grew up as a kid watching Mike Tyson destroy people and I watched every film of Ali I could get my hands on. Professional boxing has been stretched too thin. Too many titles, too many weightclasses, its all very confusing for the casual fan to follow. THrow in the fact that there has not been an intriguing heavyweight since Tyson in 1990, and the sport is crumbling. It truely is a shame when you think of some of the great American heros boxing cultivated, Rocky Marciono, Joe Lewis, Ali, Frazier and now they are all an after though of a time forgotten. MMA has caught my interest as something to fill the void. The problem with MMA for me is it has been too difficult to build the storylines around the fighters. THere are only a small handful of fighters that the majority can name off the top of their head. Throw in the fact that at least one of those guys has blown every major fight he has been in, and you have a sport that is difficult to get into till you can break into that cultish following

A$$hole promoters such as Don King have trashed this sport for their own greed at the expense of the professionalism of the prize fighter. And the sport turned a blind eye for decades. Now it is paying the consequences.

Very very true. The money got to a point that it destroyed the sport.

Another factor is the emergence of the NBA and the NFL as huge cash sports. IN the 60's and 70's and even into the 80's Boxing had the highest payout of any of the professional sports. HEll even Jack Johnson didnt work a second job, but the majority of the NFL players did in the 60's. WHen the NFL and the NBA starting tossing out multi million dollar deals they attracted more people to their respected sport. I mean football is brutal, but if I can make 35 mill guranteed versus taking the pounding in the boxing ring for a possible 7 mil its not a question.

Boxing is on the up in the UK. Hatton, Calzaghe and Amir Khan are all pretty big stars over here.

Very true, boxing in the UK is as hot as ever. However, that will not be enough to save the sport. All the big venues, all the big promoters all the big money is in the USA, and boxing as an international sport needs an American to be the poster boy. For as great as Hatton can be, he will not gain the favor of the majority of fans especially after what happened in Vegas last week.

Boxing will never be the same again. It might as well put its biggest fights on HBO or Showtime and forget the PPV nonsense, it's not worth it.

The audience would be bigger if they put all the fights on HBO or showtime it would be a better product that way

True, I would watch a high profile fight if it were on HBO, but I'm sure not gonna pay extra to watch.

Boxing needs a stalling penalty like wrestling. Mayweather did the same crap to De La Hoya who I think should have won the fight. But, I must say, I was very happy to see Mayweather win by KO. There really was no controversy after that. He won't loose until he fights someone with a ton of power.

I honestly believe that they are focusing to much on the middleweight divisions and up, where there is no action at all.

Honestly, one problem I think boxing has is that not enough people box anymore. When you know how to box - even a little - it makes boxing more interesting. You can get in the mind of the fighter and see what's going on. I love boxing and MMA. And I personally feel that even if you don't train MMA, it's still easier to follow than boxing.
