Why Baseball is Great

by user Happyskinny

This time of the year with the trade deadline about fifteen minutes away always reminds me why baseball is great.

What other sport do people follow the trade deadline this much? Football, not at all. Basketball, a little. Hockey, ehh a little I guess.

This means something to the fans of baseball. Not just the teams that are buying, but the teams that are selling as well. Sure, the teams that are buying might be getting the big star they need down the stretch, but at the same time they might be losing their star of the future. On the other hand the teams that are selling might be losing that star that was the only guy worth talking about on their team, but they might be gaining a few guys who can help them a little while down the road. People care. This is why baseball is so deep.

It is the only sport where people care so much about the game, even when the game is not going on. Even in the off season, teams are always talking, and things are always happening that keep people interested. It's almost like the season is 365 days a year even though games are not played all the way through. This is why this time of the year reminds me why this game is great. It makes me feel sorry for people who are not baseball fans. It is why I became interested in the behind the scenes actions of the front office that made me want to pursue a career in sport. The drama is not scripted yet it could not be better.

the reason people follow the trade deadline in baseball so obsessively is because there is no salary cap. in football, there is. you arent going to see too many blockbuster deals in football, whereas in baseball, theres a blockbuster deal each day.

I realize there is no salary cap. That is part of the reason it works so well. The salary cap keeps us talking about teams that do not spend money, and teams that do spend money. If there were a salary cap, George Steinbrenner would never have any media attention(Which some may argue is a good thing).

Hockey's deadline is likely the one that has the most impact on a season. Baseball is a close second. Basketball is a distant third. Football, the trading deadline simply does not exist.

Agreed, although I don't think baseball is the only sport where people care this much about the game -- the NFL is another sport where people are obsessed (well, speaking for myself at least) 365 days a year... I suppose the NFL Draft would be football's version of the MLB trade deadline, and people get incredibly worked up over it, whereas the MLB draft isn't even televised.

Good point. The NFL draft probably is the one thing that sets it apart from other sports. However, I just do not think that the off season besides the draft has as much going on as baseball does. Although it is definitely second to me behind baseball. I mean I'm one of those guys who follows the baseball draft online pick by pick and actually go to college baseball games.

I just like seeing guys in new uniforms... especially when you'd never think of 'em on particular teams. Shawn Chacon, whom will forever be remembered a Yankee is a symbol of New York MORE than any Apple could ever dream.

I definitely agree that baseball is great...but I must respectfully disagree that the trading deadline is one of the things that come to mind when I think about the greatness of baseball.

Hear, hear. If you need the trade deadline to get excited about baseball, then you need the dunk to get excited about basketball, and a big hit to get excited about football.

I never once said that I got the trade deadline was THE reason I get excited about baseball. I said it reminds me why I like it so much.

Happyskinny...yeah I get that, I don't think any baseball fan would make the trade deadline THE premiere reason why baseball's cool. I'm just saying that while the trade deadline is entertaining and important, I wouldn't call it a reason as to why baseball is great...it's just business as usual.

That's because there's only 16 games in football. In baseball, there's so many games that you can easily evaluate what you have and what you need. But in football, the deadline comes weeks after you figure out your team's strengths and weaknesses.
