Why An Ohio State-Michigan Rematch is NOT an Option

6
Vote

The cast members at ESPN on ABC, along with the majority of mainstream sports media, are pushing with all their might for a National Championship rematch of Saturday’s Ohio State-Michigan game. No matter what the 24-hour sports network and others suggest, “The Game of the Century” wasn’t all that. Think about it, and try to be objective as you do.

Simple, Michigan is the only team in contention for the second spot in the BCS Title game that has lost to a team better than them. Florida lost to Auburn, ND lost to Michigan, USC lost to Oregon. I don't think it was the Game of the Century(That was last year's rose bowl), it was as good as it could have been.

Simple - if you can't win a conference championship, you do not deserve a shot at a National Championship. Sorry, Michigan - that was your only chance.

Shark, that's kind of myopic. If you lose your conference to the best team in the country, on the road, by only 3 points, and you're clearly the second-best team in the country, why not get a second chance? Who would you advocate over Michigan, whose only loss came against the #1 team in the country? USC? Florida? Near as I can tell, we need a 12-team playoff between OSU, Michigan, USC, Louisville, Notre Dame, Florida, West Virginia, Rutgers, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Texas, and LSU.

I'm sorry but did I dream that the only reason Michigan didn't lose at home to Ball State was because of a botched referee's call inside two minutes and inside Michigan's 25-yard-line? Does the second best team in the country almost lose at home to an average MAC team???

OSU should play USC (if the don't lose again) or the SEC champ.

Not myopic at all. Who else good has had a chance to play OSU other than Michigan. If you read the post in its entirety, you'll see why Michigan shouldn't play OSU again. A 4-7 Ball State team was seven yards and a two-point conversion away from tying UM AT Michigan! How many teams with winning records has UM played compared with USC or Florida? And as far as a 12-team playoff? With those teams??? Rutgers? Louisville? Texas - with TWO losses? Arkansas who lost to USC 50-14? LSU - with two losses? Gimme a break.

Why, Michigan only has the 12th-hardest schedule in the country!! My god, they've practically played all Division II schools! What a bunch of cupcakes! My point about the 12-team playoff is that there's Ohio State... and there's everybody else. How do you pick among the one-lossers? Hell, 2-loss LSU and Texas are almost certainly better teams than 1-loss Rutgers, Boise, Wisconsin, Arkansas, and (maybe) Notre Dame. And why the Louisville disdain? They've played as tough a schedule as Florida, with the same number of losses. Frankly, there are about eleven non-Ohio State teams that could all legitimately be the second-best team in the country, regardless of whether they have 2 losses or 1 (whoops, I forgot that 2 losses should eliminate you from the race, schedule strength be damned -- and in related news, Tulane was retroactively awarded the 1998 National Championship!). Point is, we need a playoff, and we need one now -- lest we simply declare OSU the Champs today, by default. Instead of having the BCS arbitrarily choose #2 for us, why don't we make the contenders earn it on the field?
