Why America Hates Soccer

by user Wtt02005

The World Cup is set to finish soon which means it will be another four years before America starts slightly caring about soccer. Why is this so? I think the following breakdown outlines the reasons:

Not enough points: All American sports are very heavy quantitative affairs. Basketball scores rise up past the 100's, football can get up to the 40's, and even boxing's 1000 flurry of punches gets quantified into a max of ten points per round. In soccer, whether it is the offside rule, the big field, or the defense, scoring generally does not get above 2 points for either team. This leads many Americans to be like "BORING" or "ZZZ..." and they cannot stand to watch 90 minutes of no scoring.

No Established Organization: America has the big three of the NBA, NFL, and the MLB, but no American soccer league. Sure, there is Major League Soccer (MLS), but when did it ever get airtime on ESPN? America, according to ESPN, would rather watch the WNBA or women's volleyball instead of soccer.

No National Icon: Soccer may be a sport, but America loves to personify the game. Michael Jordan brought basketball into everyone's home, Pete Sampras made everyone think he was like a tennis God (Roger Federer then took over), and even non football fans at least know athletes like Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders. However, when it comes to soccer, it's like...uhhh David Beckham? This may be due to the fact that we do not have a popular soccer organization in America, but in the end, it is about the game. In my opinion, Beckham is only popular because people think he is God's gift to women. I do not know how much he scores (probably next to nothing considering it's soccer), and America apparently does not care either. They just care about his good looks. If we do not care about his game, we do not care about the game of soccer.

Very Unsuccessful Team: If America is not good at it, we do not care. Plain and simple. Had the American team even competed just a little, we might have supported them. Unfortunately, we just continue to run commercials of some foreign guy saying, "The world no longer looks forward to playing against you [USA]" or something like that. The commercial attacks our lack of teamwork and passion, and apparently, we do not mind. It's like we disown our own child except it's a bunch of guys we're not related to, so it's not a very hard decision to make.

If Beckham is God's gift to women, he probably scores quite a bit ;)

And now for the serious comment: Most Americans are simple-minded and dumb, to be blunt. I cannot for the life of me figure out why boxing is more popular than soccer. It's two people kicking the crap out of each other. Now granted, I thought Fox Sports' 50 Best Damn Beat Downs was friggin hilarious, but that's about all I can stand. One punch and done, like someone getting hit in the face in a movie, it's fairly comedic. Maybe this makes me one of those simple-minded people, but at least I can enjoy a soccer game.

Watching two people kick the crap out of each other is a helluva alot better than watching one guy curl up in a ball and cry for 15 minutes because another player might have accidently grazed his leg while running by.

Ok, I'll admit, the diving has to go. It really gives soccer a bad name here. But seriously, what kind of neanderthal society do we live in where we pay people to have the ability to beat the shit out of someone else? If you and I did it on the street, we'd be arrested, but here we are PAYING people to do it! There's no rational explanation for boxing as a sport other than the fact that it takes absolutely no mental skill to compete or watch, like NASCAR. Hey, let's pay people to drive around in circles! And people wonder why we have television shows that completely map out the lives of celebrities. It's because the majority of Americans are too stupid to make their own lives interesting. They'd rather sit at home and watch people beat each other up or drive around for four hours.

Julio César Chávez (Mexico), Kostya Tszyu (Russia), Ricardo Mayorga (Nicaragua), Félix 'Tito' Trinidad, Jr. (Puerto Rico). What do these people all have in common??? They are all current of former boxing champions from countries where soccer is the most popular sport. The first boxers were British. It's not even an American sport. Even if it was, it's not like American's invented violent sports. The Romans threw people in a ring with a tiger for fun. The Aztecs played a basketball like game, where the loser was killed. Italians and Mexicans still like soccer. American's don't like soccer because we are all "simple-minded and dumb" and love violence more than anyone else in the world, we don't like soccer because it's a boring, tedious sport to watch.

I said before and I'll say it again: As a sports fan, I root for a good story, as an American, I'd rather watch soccer Moms than soccer games!

I'm not sure that soccer is hated by americans. Just morons like manny who can only appreciate a sport that gives them time to take potty breaks. But seriously, it was pretty popular back in the late 70's early 80's (remember pele and beckenbauer played here?). Not sure Major League Soccer will be able to draw big names like them given the current structure, but that is not to say that it can't be a successful league. For soccer to continue its popularity growth, a few players will need to goto the big leagues in europe to compete. A strong showing in qualifying for 2010 and we will all be infatuated with the game for a couple of months like we are now.

Yeah, I have to agree. It seems like a lot of people have really gotten into the World Cup this year. This was the first time I was interested in it and I can't wait to see what the Americans can do in 2010 now that they've sparked a bit more interest.

Damn it, Europe has tried to make soccer interesting for you. But still you turn away... America is one of the few countries in the world that football is not Numbers 1-3 in - in fact I can't think of another country.

I'll explain your argument from a British perspective on Hockey. Not enough points - no-one cares about that. There is an established organisation, albeit a minority one. There is no national icon. Very unsuccessful team - We're behind Mexico and Australia! Yet the stadia is always full for Elite League games and the few Internationals played. In the British League, the only possible icon is the Belfast Giants' Theoren Fleury. But we don't care we are no good. That just makes us support them more.

It's the whole superpower mentality: people think we have to be the best at EVERYTHING. I think it's stupid, but I guess that's why I'm an American soccer fan.

Theo Fleury! So England hockey is to North American hockey what US soccer is to European football. We can only hope for someone like Beckham, Zizzou or Ronaldo to finish out their playing days in US. That would help bolster popularity.

I think Americans hate soccer because every four years they are told that they hate soccer by a big portion of the media. The other portion chastises American sports fans for not liking soccer because its the number one sport across the world. If people keep hearing that Americans hate soccer, they eventually just believe it without thinking about it.

I think the opposite. I think Americans hate soccer because the rest of the world is constantly ragging on them - and this increases them to a crescendo every four years - for not falling in line with the rest of the world and loving it. Americans are independent people; odds are if the whole world tells them to like something they won't.

Landon Donovan is pretty recognizable, but compared to other of the world's great players he is nothing. MLS should market him, along with Freddy Adu.

Here's why Americans hate soccer: because you have to stick around for a 90 minute match to watch 2-3 goals scored. And that's if you're lucky.
