Who will win The Open?

6

by user Alex Holowczak

As Round Three of The Open Championship has been concluded, there is a tightly packed leaderboard at the top...

203 - Tiger Woods
204 - Sergio Garcia, Chris DiMarco, Ernie Els
205 - Jim Furyk, Angel Cabrera
206 - Hidetoshi Tanihara
207 - Mark Calcavecchia, Adam Scott
208 - Eduardo Romero, Greg Owen

Those are all the players within five strokes of the lead. Garcia and Owen will be the main focus of the European support, as the rest of the leaderboard is again, dominated by Americans.

Who do people want to win the Tournament? -

  • Woods has already won 10 majors
  • Garcia is the best European hope
  • DiMarco has lost in two playoffs (the new Monty?)
  • Els is another home favourite, and only has one Open to his name
  • Furyk is an unlikely winner with a dodgy swing
  • Cabrera is an Argentine European Tour regular so may get some support
  • Tanihara is the underdog
  • Calcavecchia is the veteran of his 1989 win
  • Scott would like to follow Ogilvy's success at the US Open for the Aussies
  • Romero is another European favourite from Argentina
  • Owen is the only English hope with a shot, so he'll be the home favourite
  • Goosen is only six shots back and could make a charge
  • Anyone else?

I hope DiMarco or Garcia win it, but I wouldn't mind if Els and Woods star. It would be good for them to have a duel like the "Duel in the Sun" Open in 1977, Watson v Nicklaus. If that happened, I would back Els, 5-times World Matchplay Champion to win.

By the way - tomorrow's last 10 pairs are:-
1351 - Clark & Fukabori
1402 - Khan & Ho
1413 - Goosen & Verplank
1424 - Allenby & Kelly
1435 - Owen & Lonard
1446 - Scott & Romero
1457 - Tanihara & Calcavecchia
1508 - Furyk & Cabrera
1519 - DiMarco & Els
1530 - Woods & Garcia

My money is on Tiger because he is hungry and wants to make up for his US Open performance.

But who would you want to win it?

The answer would still be the same. With the year Tiger has had, and the hunger he is exhibiting, I would like to see him win the British Open.

Mark Calcavecchia cause he has the coolest last name. I actually had the Open on this morning. I was genuinely interested for the first 10 minutes or so, but then I quickly continued my streak for falling asleep whenever golf is on TV for more than 20 minutes. I think I fell asleep when Woods and Els were on 13 or so and I woke up after it was over.

I'd bet dollars to dingbats that Tiger kisses the Claret Jug.

Tiger is the greatest front runner in golf history. He still has a 1 stroke lead going into Sunday, and thats all he will need. Sergio cannot handle the pressure of living walking 18 with Tiger on Sunday
