Who is the next Maurice Jones-Drew?

For those of you who are fantasy football owners, you can understand this question. Who is the next MJD or Maurice Jones Drew? To be the next wire wonder is a difficult assignment... finding him is even more difficult.

Even in the real NFL draft if you find a player that exceeds expectations you are considered to have a great eye for talent. Take [[Marques Colston], drafted one away from being Mr. Insignificant, he made his way to not only the New Orleans Saints starting lineup in his rookie year but was a huge part of their run to the NFC Championship game. Everybody thought that Sean Payton, in his first year as head coach, did something all head coaches claim to have done, found the proverbial "diamond in the rough". If you were lucky enough to draft Marques Colston for your fantasy team or get him on a wire you too could hold your head up high and proclaim that you knew something that nobody else did.

But MJD and Marques Colston are last year's prize, who can we look at this year? Well let's look at the choices.

Out of the 2007 draft it's hard to say who is going to be the next waiver wire wonder, but looking at the 2007 off season changes I would have to say there are plenty of people under the radar. First up is Travis Henry. Henry was the running back for the Tennessee Titans last year and put up pretty good numbers, over 1200 yards and 7 touchdowns (stats from NFL.com). But he was running in an offense designed around the quarterback and behind an offensive line that isn't exactly known for their run blocking. This year he is at Denver and I believe he will make a big impact. Denver's offense likes to run down hill and their blocking scheme is set up just for that, Denver likes to open up their passing attack with the run and now they have a back that can set that up. Look for Henry to get at least 20-25 touches a game and average about 90-100 yards and 1 touchdown per game. In most drafts though Henry isn't taken as a backup or even in the top 3 rounds. If you can grab him in the mid 3rd round do so... you will be pleasently surprised.

I had the luxury of having MJD and Colston on my league-winning team last year. I wouldn't consider Henry in this category, because he's not a rookie and he's expected to have a good season in that Running Back Factory known as the Denver Broncos. Of rookies, I'd consider RBs Brian Leonard in St. Louis and Colby Smith in KC, and TE Greg Olsen (he may be drafted, but if he's not, he's worth taking).

You got the wrong Henry. Henry isn't a rookie and he's getting picked up in the first two rounds in fantasy drafts. You want Chris Henry as the sleeper. I like him but I don't love him. He's the new Tennessee Titans RB, drafted out of Arizona. Can be a MJD type.

Well, if he's talking about the wrong Henry, at least he didn't say Thierry Henry..

Although I think Travis Henry will be awesome this year, having a Denver running back on your fantasy team almost always leads to misery. The Broncos are supposed to be getting away from the "running back by committee" thing, but I'd still be cautious.

Well, it seems like he used to operate under the assumption that anybody -- even my mom -- could run the ball for the Broncos. After a disappointing season last year, he revised his strategy by bringing in Henry, who should get most of the carries but will be competing with Mike Bell and Cecil Sapp. Shanny was high on the Mike Bell love last year, so who knows what will happen.
