Who is the best CF ever?

With all the talk over the All-Star break from guys like Joe Morgan and Dusty Baker about how Willie Mays is the best player ever (or at least the best living player), it begs the question, is he even the best CF ever? He was great, but it's not like he's without competition here.

The way I see it, there are 3 candidates for the title of the best CF ever: Willie Mays, Ty Cobb, and Mickey Mantle. In a perfect world, Negro Leaguer Oscar Charleston would deserve a mention as well, but it's just impossible to compare.

So it's between Mays, Mantle, and Cobb. First, a look at Willie Mays, perhaps the premier defensive player ever. The "Say Hey Kid" was also very consistent at the plate, and stayed consistent for a long time, which is how he wound up with 660 HR. His OPS+ is 156, though that was hampered a bit by the last couple of seasons in his career, when he was over 40 and not quite the player he once was. But he did lead the NL in OPS 5 times during his career, during which he won 12 straight gold gloves. So it's safe to say that he was a premier defensive player while being one of the biggest offensive threats of his generation.

Next is Mickey Mantle, who played around the same era as Willie Mays. His career counting numbers don't look as good, but that's mostly because he did not play as long as Mays. In his prime, he might have been the best hitter of his generation not named Ted Williams. He had great patience at the plate (career .421 OBP) while hitting for a lot of power (he was in the top 3 in the AL in SLG for 11 of 13 straight years). His OPS+ of 172 places him 6th all-time.

Last, there's Ty Cobb, who is a bit harder to compare because he played a good portion of his career in the Deadball Era. But he was an incredible pure hitter with lots of speed. While he didn't hit a lot of HR, nobody did, and he still lead the AL in SLG for 6 straight years (and 8 times overall in his career). His .366 career AVG is best ever, and his .433 OBP is 9th all-time. He also stole almost 900 bases in his career. The Georgia Peach's OPS+ of 167 is 10th all-time.

So what does this all mean? First, these were all exceptional players... when I made my list of the 10 best MLB players ever, they were all ranked in the top 10. No one is really a bad choice.

I will say this, I think Mantle had the best peak of any of them, but he just didn't have the longevity that Cobb or Mays did. So I would probably put him 3rd there. After that, it's almost a pick'em. You could probably make convincing arguments in favor of Willie Mays or Ty Cobb being the best player ever, let alone best CF ever. But if I had to choose, I think I would go with Willie Mays. Best defensive CF ever, and he wasn't too shabby as a hitter either.

Who would you choose? Why?

Willie Mays...he was the first true 5 tool player...Ty Cobb was a racist jerk and Mickey Mantle, was, well, a Yankee...and even in his day he was overshadowed by Willie Mays

I think Mantle was the superior of the three. As far as pure talent, he was probably the best player ever to play in the Major Leagues. There are scouts who still maintain that he was the fastest player they ever saw. He was a switch-hitter and had almost equal power from both sides. If he had taken care of himself and not had so many fluke injuries, his career numbers would have been through the roof. He had fewer stolen bases than Mays, but he had a better stealing percentage. A lot of Mays' numerical advantage was padding numbers when he was far past his prime.

"he was probably the best player ever to play in the Major Leagues." I believe you are the first person I've ever hear assert that. I'm so flabbergasted, I don't even know how to respond.

Yeah, he was amazing. As I wrote in the post, I think he actually had the highest peak of the three players... if only he could have kept it up for longer.

Other than possibly Ruth, Mantle is undoubtedly the best pure talent of all-time. I give Ruth the nod only because he was also a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher. I am really surprised the name Griffey hasn't come up at all in this arguement. To me, he is really the Mantle of our time. Supremely talented, ultimately hampered by injuries. If he hadn't had all those injuries Griffey would have as many homers as Bonds or more.

It is not even close. Of the year, Willie Mays is clearly superior.

Obviously I do agree that Mays is the best, but I really don't see it's a clear thing. Cobb dominated his peers. He was an unbelievable player who hit for average (highest BA ever) and power (not HR, but doubles and triples). He was absolutely a racist jerk from all accounts, but he was a phenomenal ballplayer, one of the 5 best ever. Again, I agree Mays is superior, but Mantle and Cobb are both top 10 players ever. Nothing clear about it.

Sorry, Tyrone. He's not clearly superior. It could go either way depending on your viewpoint, but too close to call either way.

As far as pure talent, he was probably the best player ever to play in the Major Leagues. By eliminating the first five words, Josh, you change the whole context of what the guy is saying. And he might be right. Mantle never played a game more than 80% healthy his entire career, yet look what he did. The guy was a freak.

Tough question. Even considering the time in which he played, Cobb was considered an average outfielder, maybe a notch above average. Mantle really wasn't a prototypical outfielder, meaning he relied more on his speed to run down flyballs as opposed to getting good jumps and taking the correct angle, as Mays did. The difference for me is Mays playing in Candlestick, for him to be as great an outfielder as he was, with the wind blowing all the time, really tells me alot. So, give me Willie.

I'd take Mays. I think Griffey would be on the list, too, if it weren't for the rest of his era doing steroids.

Willie Mays is not only the best center fielder of all-time, he's the greatest player of all time. At any position. That's what methinks anyway.

Today, probably Griffey. In the history of the MLB, deffinantly Willie Mays. One of the best players in baseball as well.

They all have their bragging rights. Mickey Mantle is, BY FAR, the best switch hitter in all of baseball. Ty Cobb: 2nd in hits, 4th in SBs, highest career AVG, etc. Willie Mays: 4th in homers, 350+SBs, probably THE best defensive player to ever play the game. ...If I had to choose, I'd choose Ty Cobb.
