Who is the Best Current American Soccer Player?

15
Vote

by SSreporters

Let's face it, we have a mediocre soccer team. But, there is always one particularly good player on the US Men's Roster. So I ask, who is currently the best US soccer player? The player must be playing either on the national squad of the senior, U-20, or U-17, or a football club. For example, Brian McBride is retired of international competition, but still plays for Fulham (albeit injured).

My answer: Freddy Adu. Why he is so unnoticed is beyond me. He's a great talent, and will be very successful in Europe.

Your turn now.

The major problem with US soccer at the moment is that whoever is deemed "the best current American soccer player" isn't good enough to help you win the World Cup in the short term. Brian McBride is very good though. Adu may turn into the Michelle Wie of football. I think Brad Fridel. He's one of the best goalies in the Premier League. He's unbeatable when he's on form. Goalkeeper is the one position the US has World Class players at.

I'm just asking. US sucks and everyone except Ibearg knows that. We like to market ourselves the best in the world at this and that, when we really aren't. Especially sports.

Damn straight! We do the opposite, then it's such a shock when we win. The media are clever like that. They make a situation doom and gloom (giving them a story), then when we win, it's such an amazing accomplishment (giving them a story). Cunning.

You do the opposite and England makes sure that you have no hope.

Indeed. We ought to field a US-strength side and beat Israel, maybe not Russia, but somehow, with recent performances, and since the England medical facility is probably busier than the training facility, I am not filled with confidence.

But yeah, Brad Friedel. He gets overlooked by the US in my opinion. And he's much better than Tim Howard. In a Madden style rating system, Howard would be an 85 or so. Friedel is a 90-95.

It's not the squad, it's Paul Robinson, he scores more goals than saves them. :)

I think i might have to make an article titled, "Why US soccer doesn't suck" mind you it wouldn't be why the US is the greatest or anything, we're clearly not, but we also don't suck.

Okay...what happened in 2006 then? Plus, dominating CONCACAF means jack.

I'd would have to cast my vote for Brad Friedel as the best US player. If we're only talking about outfield players, I think it's Clint Dempsey.

Will David Beckham count in about 6-7 years? ;)

In cricket, the residency rule is 10 years. That is set by the IOC too, so I assume football is the same. So, when he's 43, you can have him!

I gotta go with Clint Dempsey as well. Right now I think he is the best player in the US National Squad. I would not think it is Adu because he really has not seen much playing time at Benfica.

Considering 3 of the top 5 keepers in the Premier League are American, it has to be one of them. Of the outfield players, I think that Adu and Altidore have the most potential, but it has to be Dempsey at this moment.

Freidel has internationally retired, though he'd be obvious #1 if he wasn't.

Right now I think it's Dempsey but in a year or two it's gonna be Benny Feilhaber.

For some reason, I just can't get into MLS Thursdays on ESPN. Karaoke at the dive bar down the road interests me more. I prefer collegiate soccer, for the same reasons I prefer college hoops to the NBA roundball. As a soccer related note, I was yellowcarded my junior year in high school announcing a regional final game.

I can't believe that no shout outs for Demarcus Beasley. I know he plays in the SPL, but PSV is no chumpy team IMO. Just a thought.
