Who is the 2nd best PG in the NBA?

This is an interesting debate... who is the 2nd best PG in the NBA? Obviously this is assuming that we can all agree that Steve Nash is the best PG. I may not be high on Nash as MVP, but there's not much doubt in my mind that he is the premier PG in the NBA for different reasons.

So who is #2? The way I see it there are 7 candidates:

Tony Parker: Parker isn't a great scorer, but he has become a highly efficient offensive player. He doesn't take a lot of outside shots (only 38 attempts on the year), preferring to do most of his damage inside the lane. This has been a real effective thing for him, as he has shot over 50% each of the last 2 seasons.

Deron Williams: These playoffs have sort of been his coming out party, but he's been doing this type of stuff all season long. He finished 2nd in the NBA in assists with 9.3 per game, and also averaged over 16 PPG. He's also a pretty decent rebounder for a PG and a very good defender, and is developing a more consistent jumpshot. He has the quickness, vision, and all-around game to one day very soon be the best PG in the NBA.

Baron Davis: The playoffs has definitely been Davis' re-coming out party, as everyone sort of forgot about him for a couple of years. Honestly he's a threat to get injured at any time, but we've all seen what type of talent he has. He's quick off the dribble, has a very quick jumpshot, and like these other guys is a good passer. The other part of his game that's so good is his defense. He has shown that when he's healthy he is one of the best defenders at the PG position in the NBA.

Jason Kidd: He's getting older but he is still extremely effective. He's not a great shooter, but he's got a decent 3-point shot and he's pretty quick off the dribble. But more importantly is everything else that he does. He's probably the second best passer in the NBA, he's a great rebounder (over 8 per game this year!), and he's one of the best defensive PGs in the NBA.

Chauncey Billups: He wasn't quite as good this year as he was last year, but obviously he's still real good. The great thing about Chauncey is that even though he plays 36 minutes per game at PG, he only turns the ball over twice per game. That's fantastic, especially combined with the 7+ assists per game. Throw in the superb 3-point shooting and clutch performances, and he's a good candidate.

Gilbert Arenas: He's the best scorer on this list, but doesn't quite do as much as some of these other guys. He turns the ball over a relatively high amount of times compared to his assists, and he's not a great defender. But he's a solid shooter... and most importantly he gets to the line a lot. He averaged nearly 10 FT attempts per game which is one of the big reasons he's such an effective scorer.

Chris Paul: He's a guy that will probably always be compared some to Deron Williams because of the draft position, and he has not disappointed in his 2 years. He's extremely quick which allows him to get to the basket effectively. He was hurt some this year, but he was ridiculously good when he played. He averaged over 17 points per game to go along with 8.9 APG. He's also a pretty good rebounder with over 4 per game. His 3-point shot improved from 28% to 35% this year... if he can continue that he'll virtually be unstoppable.

This is extraordinarily tough choice that I have a hard time making. I would probably take Chris Paul right now, just because of his great all-around game... the shooting is coming along, quickness with the ball, great vision, and quick hands defensively. In only his second year, he has quickly moved up the charts.

But there is obviously room for disagreement here with lots of great choices. Who's your choice?

Gotta go with Agent Zero... Although, if I wanted a more traditional PG I'd take Kidd, Paul, or Williams, in that order.

Steve Nash has, what, five career triple doubles? And as you said, Kidd is better defensively. And not for nothing, put Kidd on this Suns team and he would have won three MVP's.

He calls himself Hibachi! HIBACHI! That basically eliminates all other contenders.

I love Agent Zero but he is not a PG. Only in the fact that Eddie Jordan fills him name in that spot. He is too much of a shoot first. Number 2 has to still be Kidd, Parker is making a strong push though.

Yeah Kidd would probably be my #3... I mean, he can't shoot very well, but he is just so great at all other aspects of the game. It's just great for the game that there are so many great, young PGs right now... You could probably make an argument for any of these guys.

True, Id like to see this list revisited in about 2 seasons when Paul is healthy and has some more help, and Williams has some more experience they are both gonna be studs.

Definitely... those guys are going to rule the PG position in a year or two... just love their all-around games and decision-making at the PG position.

Yeah, I've like Paul since he was at Wake. I didnt think that Williams would be as good as he is. That is a pleasant suprise. And Parker has arrived.

Not Arenas. He might be the last on that list. he is by far the best scorer and has the best youtube videos, but your primary job as a PG, if your team is going to win is to make your teamates better and Arenas has not shown an ability to do that. In fact, he may make it harder for his teammates by shooting so dang much and taking so many bad shots.

Very interesting question and not a clear answer. On talent, I would say Baron Davis or Arenas, but those guys both have "me first" issues that limit their effectiveness as PGs. Paul is going to make this an easy debate in another year or so. Parker's got the rings, but I think he is over rated because of how much easier his job is because of Duncan and his assist numbers are pretty poor for a PG of his standing. If I had to take one PG to try to win a title this year I would take Kidd. So I guess that's my answer. That said, Paul does everything Kidd does and is a waaaaaaaay better shooter. Kidd is the better leader right now, but give Paul one more year and the debate will be Paul or Nash? and then we can figure out who is number 3.

You really think Kidd is better than Nash? Really? I mean, he's a way better defender and rebounder, but nobody makes an offense go like Nash does. Meanwhile, "ason" still has no J... I'm taking Nash every time.

Kidd at 2, Paul at 3. Kidd is just an ice-cold killer and the closest thing to Steve Nash as there is.

Where is some love for Andre Miller? Just because he is playign for a bad team does not mean he is not worth of consideration.

I'm a Sixers fan, so I like Andre Miller, but I just don't think he is up to the level of these other guys. He's a great distributor and very unselfish with the basketball, but I just have a hard time including him with the likes of Kidd and Paul.

If you want to know how good Jason Kidd is, wait and see what Miki Moore does next year. You really can't be called the second best point guard in the game if you're not a PG (Gilbert), have had less than 2 great years in the league (paul was hurt this year, Williams wasn't very good his rookie year), or are constantly hurt (Davis).

Uh ... Tony Parker isn't a great scorer? Then he should be out of your debate, immediately, because scoring is his only ability.

Also, the only two people that should be in this debate are Jason Kidd, Chris Paul and Deron Williams, because, while the others may be listed as PGs, they don't play the position properly ... maybe Billups as a stretch, but he is not a creator on the offensive end. He may get assists because he happens to pass to a guy who dribbles a few times and makes an 18 footer, but that is sheer happenstance. Billups is frighteningly overrated, mainly because he was underrated for so long. The Pistons won 53 games IN THE EAST! That translates to about 34 wins on a Western schedule. Their fluke win in the '04 Finals -- against a team that was falling apart due to personal issues -- has given this guy waaaaaaay too much street cred.

If you take Nash away from the Suns, it's a 25-30 win team -- that should be your barometer.

Tony Parker could be anyone on that Spurs team. He is the poor man's Leandro Barbosa -- he has scoring outbursts simply because there are so many other factors to worry about on that team. I can't even believe you would mention him. I'd take Joe Johnson over Parker, 8 days a week.

Regardless, the answer is Kidd. The Nets are a 10 win team without that guy, despite the fact that he is 50 years old.

Tony Parker?

Are you f-ing kidding me?

The fact that Jason Kidd is not the unanimous pick here is sad and speaks to the fact that he is the most overlooked player in recent history. As far as I'm concerned, Kidd is on a short list of PGs since Magic who could be consitered among the all time best (the list: Zeke, Stockton, Payton, Kidd, Nash and I think Kidd was ultimatly the best out of this list). The man posted a triple double in the playoffs, and despite 'expert' prediction, he shows no sign of slowing down.

Agreed. He took a sad Suns team to 53 wins in '00.
