Who are the Untouchables?

16

by user Manny Stiles

Since Mel Gibson fell from grace/saved face: Who in sports broadcasting is absolutely UNTOUCHABLE? Someone who can only be revered (or if mocked, in admiration).

I was thinking this while listening to the Dan Patrick Show on the radio. Not because I thought Dan was the Untouchable, but because of that ESPN Sportscenter Radio madman Dan "The Duke" Davis. I thought to myself, how can ANYONE not like 'the Duke'? Great presence, always keep things in perspective... just a regal presence. Thus 'the Duke'.

Now Dan Patrick isn't quite Untouchable in my book because I can see a certain slice of the population that would just think he's smarmy and never gave him a chance. Same with Stuart Scott. Liked by the majority, but I can see people getting nauseous of him.

So I got to thinking... WHO are the "Untouchables"? Who are the guys could absolutely do NO WRONG and making fun of them couldn't be done with malice? Who are the media guys EVERYONE loves?

So I got to thinking...The first name that came to mind (probably for you too)

  • Peter Gammons

He's a gimme.

I kept trying and coming up with controvesial foot-in-mouths, preposterous know-it-alls, putzes whose Dads were legendary broadcasters, former athletes that point too much... it was hard!

  • Dr. Jack Ramsay - It's gotta be hard to hate that guy (Unless you're a fan of the 1977 Sixers). Come on, He's the Doctor that handed it to the Dr.
  • Tim Legler - he's even-keeled. Knowledgeable, but real. Perfectly calm while working with Greg Anthony and Stephen Aloysius Smith. Nicknamed "Legs".
  • Tom Jackson - everyone respects his knowledge. He's wise in choosing arguments, handles the big boys with ease. Other than being a Bronco, has done no wrong.
  • Eddie Johnson - former player does analysis on PHX Suns games. GREAT announcer. Cool demeanor, let's you feel like you're a part of the game. Verbally abuses Charles Barkley about his golf game. Eddie may have profited from Barkley's gambling more than anyone.
  • Keith Jackson - another no-brainer. Can you re-play a college football game in your head and not hear him?
  • Jayson Stark - great writer. True stat-geek. Enjoyed his work since forever ago! Long Live Steve Jeltz!
  • Melissa Stark - Did she ever ask a bad question?
  • Mr. T - anytime he has a microphone in his hand, I'm listening.
  • Jim Lampley - But maybe only for his love of boxing / olympics.
  • Howard Lederer - this guy is endlessly entertaining. I wish I could hire him to attend/announce my family holiday events.
  • that hockey guy, Whatshisname. Put the puck in the net, biscuit in the basket, eh? I love that guy! Gotta love him.
  • Big Daddy Al Michaels - Who do you know that says "Dude, Al Michaels is announcing? This game is gonna suck?"
  • Summer Sanders - they're ALL good lists, Summer.
  • Dara Torres-Gowen - I miss you on TV!

I hear Johnny Miller (sp?) is very good. I don't watch golf (or car racing or tennis that much) That's why I need your help!

Everybody else has flaws in their game... Hubie and Pat Summerall are living dead. Madden speaks another language only understood by Brett Favre and Frank Caliendo. Fox's James Brown is right there, but he's just too generic to have that name. Everyone else is annoying (Thom Brennamen), pompous (Joe Buck), or just unbearable (Tim McCarver) or gets minus points for past deeds (Marv Albert). I know some people dislike Kenny Mayne, although I have no idea how. Man is flavor.

If you think I'm wrong, we'll save ourselves some time... I'm beyond reproach, so there!

So that's my list. I know I'm missing a whole bunch of people...please add to my list of 'untouchables'...looking for people in the media that have no enemies and are overly beloved by the public. If there's ANY argument, there's NOT an argument...If you can argue against my list, then I'm plain wrong! Simple as that.

Ha! I still hate him as a player too much to like him as a wonderful analyst.

Good article Manny...For a local guy for me would be Bob Cousy. He used to do the Celtics games with Thommy Heinson, and the guy can barely pronounce his own name. He has some type of bad speech problem, which is a wonder why anyone would put him on the air. However, everyone seemed to love him and his little quirks and how every players name seemed different when he said it. You cannot hate the guy. He's like a teddy bear.

Peter Gammons is not an untouchable... he's way too east coast biased... but I'd have to agree with you on Howard Lederer... however for me, Steve Stone - his baseball knowledge is unmeasureable... I also watch Best Damn Sports Show quiet often and I do like Chris Rose & Rob Dibble... while Chris admitadley (sp) is not the smartest (sports wise) in the bunch, he can be very entertaining... and Rob's insights (especially baseball) are about 95% on the money IMO

Who is smarter sports wise than chris Rose in the bunch? John Salley, Rodney Peete, Tom Arnold, Brian Cox, any of the bums they have had on that show? When I catch the show he is always somehow saving the other guys from saying something stupid.

Gammons IS untouchable. HALL OF FAME No one fistpumped a "Yes!" when he went down. I like Chris Rose...even more when Tom Arnold is around. I loved Dibs when he played but I can see how he he is easily dislikable (Salley, too).

I hope that no one fist pumped a yes when he went down... I may not like Gammons... but I don't wish him I'll health either.... "I may not like what you say. But, till death I will defend your right to say it" - Voltaire.... God I love that quote & it fits here reguards to how I feel about Gammons...

I believe the hockey guy "what's his name" is named Don Cherry. And I can't stand Al Michaels because he doesn't know how to pronounce the letter "H". Huge becomes Yuge and Houston becomes Youston. Otherwise, he's a good anouncer.

You should here Jerry Remy announce a Red Sox game on NESN then. He is a habitual non-user of the letter H. Not to mention the rest of his awful Boston accent. However, he is a very good and knowlegeable announcer.

Yes Cherry. And there's one other good one, Gary something. That's not enough to knock Michaels out. Gammons has the hypnotizing jowels. No biggie. Yistory in the making Yere. If Al michaels had a moile the size of Connecticut on his head, you still couldn't knock his presence.

I can't believe We forgot about him. That and when Ralph Kiner was in his heyday for the Mets. Even when he went a little batty, he was great.

I thought about Scully, Garagiola and Harry Kalas... all great! And all are old and annoying to many. Ralph Kiner was not good. Take it from a non-Mets fan.

For bad broadcasters, how about the worst tandem in baseball, John Miller and Joe Morgan. Just awful

No way! John Miller intentionally mispronounces peoples' names and Joe Morgan contradicts himself all the time. Plus his complete unabashed denial of the success of moneyball philosophy whenever he can shows his ignorance.
