Who Will Endure, Dimaggio or Williams?

They say the hardest thing to do in sports is to hit a baseball. It is so difficult, that 30% success is considered great. My question is this, which record is going to endure longer, Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak, or Ted Williams being the last hitter to hit over .400?

My opinion, Dimaggio will be a lot harder to top. The way talent is going and improving in modern times, I honestly believe we will have some eclipse .400 again. George Brett was close, Todd Helton, we are getting there. I think someone will do it. But the consistency you need to achieve in order to not go 0-4 even once, a hit in every game, is too much. With injuries, tough pitching, and the trials of every day life of a ball player, to not take a goose egg for that many games straight is next to impossible. I think Dimaggio won't be topped, but someone will hit .400 again. Discuss..

I'd be suprised if somebody hit for .400 - but I'd be blown away and in need of medical aid if somebody hit for 56 games in a row. The best hitters in baseball (Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Barry Bonds, Paul Molitor, etc) weren't able to do it and with pitching going the way it is, I'd be suprised if anyone ever approaches 50 games again. Still, I don't think either one is going to be broken anytime soon.

I think hitting .400 is more impressive and more difficult to do. I'd like to know what DiMaggio hit over that 56 game hit streak. I bet it's not that far over .400....which would Williams' .406 over the course of a full season that much more impressive.

10 game hit streaks make sportscenter...imagine that 5 times over...thats how hard it is. The thing is, hitting .400, you can have a bad day...trying to get a hit 56 times requires you to be on for 56 straight games and hope everything goes your way...ie, no intentional walks, HBP, etc...and no injuries

To officially hit .400, you have to have at least 500 AB's in a season. On the other hand, to break Joe's record - you have to hit in 57 straight. As baseball moves away from the roids era, I see it turning to speed and smallball. Hence, it is likely that we will see both of these records broken within the next 20 years. As far as which once goes first - I do not know. But both will be broken one day.

If someone breaks Dimmagio's record, they will probably finish over .400 also.

Assuming that the 57 hits come in the same season.

I'm also thinking that whoever hits 57 in a row might also hit .400 that season. That's unreal though...imagine a player breaking DiMaggio's and William's records in the same season! That would make me faint! Ichiro has be in this discussion too on who might be able to do it.
