Who Should Be the NL's Starter for the 2006 All-Star Game?

As I did with the AL yesterday, today I'm going to take a look at the top 5 guys that have a shot at being named the starter for the MLB All-Star Game. I want to say again that all of these guys may help or hurt themselves over the next month, but I think these are the ones to watch.

  1. Brandon Webb, Arizona Diamondbacks - 8-1, 2.06 ERA, 2 CG, 2 SHO, 104.2 IP (leads MLB), 74 K, 13 BB, 1.07 WHIP. Almost everyone will agree that, for now, the discussion should start and stop with this guy. He's been spectacular for the first half of the season.
  2. Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds - 8-2, 2.31 ERA, 1 CG, 68 K, 18 BB, 1.10 WHIP. Nothing brings a bigger smile to my face then a former Red Sox succeeding after being traded away, especially in the NL. Big concern here is whether during the second half of the season hitters will figure him out now that they've seen him a couple of times.
  3. Tom Glavine, New York Mets - 9-2, 3.06 ERA, 64 K, 26 BB, 1.15 WHIP. Rock solid for arguably the best team in baseball this year. Sentimental favorite, but how can you deny Webb?
  4. Brad Penny, Los Angeles Dodgers - 7-1, 2.34 ERA, 58 K, 23 BB, 1.17 WHIP. The Dodgers didn't make it to first on Nomar's bat alone. How many of you realized he was having this good of a year? Honestly.
  5. Pedro Martinez, New York Mets - 6-2, 2.94 ERA, 97 K, 20 BB, 0.90 WHIP. Pedro barely gets the nod over Jason Schmidt. Mostly because I'm afraid the Mets fans around here will string me up if I don't put him on here. :) Also, because he has a ridiculously high 10.19 K/9 and a ridiculously low 5.99 H/9.

Honorable Mention: Jason Schmidt, Chris Young, Derek Lowe, Carlos Zambrano

Pedro - he's got the star power and the numbers.

Gotta go with Webb. Barring a collapse for the next few weeks, he has been dominant except his last start. Glavine makes a strong case and I have been really impressed with Chris Young though i doubt he would even be considered. If he continues he will at least merit a spot on the team (Nice fantasy gem i got in him too!)

If Glavine has never been the starter, I'd pick him. If he has, I'd give it to one of the young guys.

1. Webb, 2. Martinez, 3. Perry, 4. Arroyo, 5. Glavine. Martinez hasn't quite been at his usual standard, whereas Webb has been outstading. Glavine was an easy fifth in this choice. I worry about Arroyo. Perry could do a job.

I vote Pedro...if he was luckier he'd have a few more wins and would be the obvious choice...and that's not to take anything away from Webb. He'd also be derserving.

Brandon Webb - no brainer. Although it's tough to leave Pedro, Arroyo, and Glavine off considering the numbers each is putting up. But Webb has been flat-out fantastic.

Webb is the keeper, the good thing is, each will have a case/make the team in general.

It has to be Webb. How could it not be? Pedro has the star power and the numbers? First of all, why should star power be a factor? This is supposed to be about accomplishment. And without compensation for star power, he doesn't have the numbers. He has the fourth-best ERA of the pitchers listed here, ahead of only teammate Tom Glavine. He has the fewest wins of pitchers listed. He's money on WHIP and strikeouts, but he's below a handful of pitchers where it really counts - ERA and wins.

If Pedro is luckier he has more wins? I understand catching some tough breaks. I saw it with Clemens all year last year. But Pedro is playing for the team with the best record in the NL, and he has fewer wins than Webb, who is playing for a team that is a full five games worse than the Mets.

Both Teams are good. I go with Webb because not only does he have more wins but he has high Ks and WHIP, not to mention he is basically carrying the D-Back Staff. He goes out every game and plays practically the whole game. Plus his ERA is sick

Look, Glavine has been the msot consistent pitcher, and the only "sure thing" pitcher the Mets have had in the startin rotation mess. And they have the best record in the N.L. anyway. It wasn't for having some stability the Mets wouldn't even be first in the N.L. East. It should be Tom Glavine. And Plus despite a hall of fame career he's never started one.

The only "sure thing" pitcher? I think I guy who's 6-2 with a 2.94 ERA, a .090 WHIP and 90 Ks through less than half of the season is a sure thing pitcher. He also has more offensive support and more bullpen support than Webb does.

Billy Wagner blew two of Pedro's wins in the 9th inning...I would call that unlucky

And as I said, I understand having some tough breaks. Those are tough breaks. But it's also about the opportunities you make for yourself. Pedro has five starts this year where he has pitched fewer than 7 innings, Webb only has three. Pedro has two starts where he pitched less than six innings, Webb has none. And Pedro only has one start where he pitched beyond 7 innings. Webb has 8. Pedro has zero complete games this year, and Webb has two (both shutouts, by the way).

that's a fair point. Webb is a great pitcher. I just don't think people will tune in for him.

No, people won't tune in to see him. They tune in to see the hitters. Honestly, who tunes in for a starting pitcher that's going to throw 2 innings at the most?

I do not think pedro is even 2nd on this list. Lets start my discounting any other years stats, as they don't technically count towards the AS game, even though the fan voting basically disproves that for the position players. Moreover, Brad Penny has pedro in those important stats (More wins and a lower ERA), Glavine is close and Arroyo has him beat too. If anything, I think Webb will get it, but you wanna go with star power, I'd rather give it to glavine, the guy deserves a career achievement award and hasn't started one yet...So sentimentally, i could see glavine...

I would agree with that. If you want the big name, Glavine is more deserving overall. But that's just a big name. I still don't think Glavine has the star power that Pedro has. But that's just because he doesn't make headlines by calling out his coach and his teammates, as Pedro has been known to do.
