Who Gives This Guy $16 Mil.?

by user Chachi

It has been reported that Barry Bonds and the Giants have come to terms on a one-year 16 million dollar contract. Also, the contract reportedly comes with enough incentive clauses to make the deal worth $20 million. WHAT? $20 million dollars for a 42 year-old player who hit .270 with 26 homers and 77 RBI. Am I missing something here? Did I not see the same deteriorating, brokendown player last year as everybody else?

Bonds' base pay of $16 million alone seems excessive to me. In 2006 that would have made him the 10th highest paid player in the league. If he hits all of his incentives and makes it to $20 million he would have been the 4th highest paid player. Call me crazy, but paying $16 to $20 million dollars for a guy whose batting average didn't crack the top 100 in MLB last year, whose RBI ranked 90th, and whose HR ranked 45th seems a little like overkill. Yes he ranked second in walks and first in on base percentage, but that's because there was nobody else that could hit for power in the Giants' lineup every week. Why pitch to the one guy on the team that could even possibly take you deep? I think this year we will see a considerably higher amount of pitchers going after Bonds instead of pitching around him.

The only logical explanation I can think of for the Giants to pull the trigger on this deal is this: they're desperate! Jason Schmidt has just bolted town, they couldn't pull of any big name free agent signings, and the deal for Manny being Manny had fallen apart. They had to do something to keep their team relevant and to keep fans coming to the park. So, why not overpay for the most controversial figure in your sport? Heck, if that was their logic then I can understand. If they needed the sideshow that is Barry to cover up the fact that the team is pretty weak then I get it. But if they paid Bonds that much because they think as a ballplayer he is worth it, then Brian Sabean needs his head examined.

You are right. The Giants had their backs against the Wall. Schmidt is gone, and the remains of that team that went to a World Series a few years back is gone. At the Very least Bonds will help sell tickets, especially as he nears that home run mark IF he can provide any spark to the lineup then its just an added bonus.

I just finished looking through more salary stuff and for $16 million Brian Sabean could have had the entire Marlins lineup last year. I don't know why, but that makes me laugh.

He will generate far more than $16 million in ticket sales alone. Last season he broke out of his funk late in the year, hit .333 in August and .300 in September/October. He came into his own and hit pretty well at the end of the season. The Giants are hoping he can keep that pace up. He still had an OPS of .999 and you can't argue with having a guy on your team that gets on base half of his plate appearances. It isn't a bad move for the Giants in my opinion.

But $16 million! Come on. If it wasn't for Barry's ego any other aging star would have got less and taken less. He's in it for himself and the record. And it isn't a bad move for the Gianst because they screwed up all their other moves.

Right, that way, Bonds wouldn't get paid for creating a sellout every night, the owner would. It's not like the revenue doesn't go to someone. Why not give it to the best player on the team/ reason for selling tickets?

And only a dumb aging player would sign for less. I would love for you to list for me a significant amount of "aging players" that willingly take huge pay cuts.

His ego is no different than plenty of other aging Vets in MLB. Glavine signed a big deal, as did Maddox. He got that much cause of what he brings. Bonds brings a spark to the offense, he will get on base no matter what. And the bottomline is the name of the game is marketing and sales. No one will fill the seats more or better than Bonds sitting on 20 and 21 homers in late July- mid August.

If Gil Meche and Ted Lilly (worse than average pitchers) can make $10 million per year, then Bonds (automatic sellout/ top 20 player) is worth at least $16 million in that market.

Bonds even at his advanced age is at op 20 player. Teams have to adjust the way they pitch to avoid him. He forces walks time and time again. If he had any protection his numbers would increase even more.

He's worth it. Think about it. On the day he breaks the record, the Giants don't allow anyone else into the stadium. They pick up the ball in the bleachers and then sell it on ebay for 30 mil. BAM 10-14 milloin dollar profit.

First of all, I pointed out that if this was a move to fill seats and sell tickets then I'm ok with it. I was also trying to point out that I think it's ridiculous that a man on one good leg is going to be paid like a top ten player. Furthermore, there have been several one-time stars who have taken pay cuts to stay with a team. And maybe they weren't huge pay cuts, but they usually sacrficed some and conceded that they weren't as good anymore. Is Barry worth $16 million to $20 million? Maybe toto the Giants because of ticket and merchandising sales, but definitely not because of what he does on the field anymore.

I guess that counts, although the specifics should be pointed out. Bernie looked terrible in 2005, so the Yankees didn't pick up his $15 million option. Instead, they paid him the $3.5 million buyout. Then, they signed him for $1.5 million. It's not as if he chose to take a small contract instead of a huge one. No one was going to give him a huge contract and he didn't deserve one. Technically, yes he asked for less than he could have theoretically gotten, but he didn't have a whole lot of leverage.

And you think Bonds had a bunch of other $15 million deals available to him? The Giants were the only ones willing to pony up that type of cash because they have the only fan base that loves him and is still willing to pay regularly to see him.

Then Bonds DID have someone willing to pay that much, the Giants. Vizquel had NO ONE willing to pay $6 million. Also, had it come down to it, yes, another team would have taken a shot on Bonds with a big contract.

The nice thing about the United States of America is this wonderful thing called a free market. Aguy can get paid whatever someone is willing to pay him. WHY make a big deal about this? Only one of two possible answers: You're stupid, or you're jealous.

Why does it matter to you, me or anyone else what Barry gets paid?

Get over the $number$, it's a small percentage of the revenue he generates. You're not bitching about how someone can afford to pay him... Stop hating the player, hate the game and the owners instead. Better yet, just come out honest and say you're overtly jealous of Barry.

I'm tired of everyone acting like little bitchy babies when they see numbers get slapped on a contract. First off, dude will never see HALF of the number on the dotted line (taxes, agent's cut, other taxes, fees, more taxes and supporting his posse), secondly Why aren't you bitching about how much MORE money actors and actresses pull in for MUCH less effort (a single movie vs. a season of sport)???

Because that is the appropriate thing to bitch about Manny, how much actors are getting paid in relation to sports stars. How about how much teachers, scientists, and the like are making compared to sports stars? If you are going to get up on your high horse then atleast get both legs up there. Also, we comment on how much he is getting paid because this is a sports sight where we discuss, bitch, moan and analyze everything about sports including the contracts. It isn't jealousy, it is just discussion. If I complain about the job the President does or how much he gets paid is that jealousy too?

You're right, it's Barry's fault that he agreed to and signed a contract that the Giants wrote and put on the table... Show me a teacher that does his job for Tens - Hundreds of MILLIONS of people and I'll show you a teacher that's due a raise.

I guess I should get a raise since I'm a parent of two and children are the future right?

It's the system we have. To complain about it is like standing in a dark room bitching about it being dark. Try turning on a light and seeing what's in the room.

I'm not bitching about the system. I was just showing that your comparison to actors and actresses was asinine. Also, you glossed over my main point that this is a sports sight where we discuss players, teams and contracts. It's not jealousy, it is just a point of discussion (which has seemed to raise much of it) for the community.

At $6 million I think he'd be a steal. And no, I don't like Barry, but not because he's "getting paid". I just think he's an ass and don't really care for him. Chachi, do you have a job? Do you ever tell the boss, "Hey, I am making this company money, but I don't want to have it. I think you should get what I worked hard for. Man it is just so nice working here that I would do it for free"? I think not. So why would Bonds ever give up the money he is generating to a guy that probably makes more than Bonds does?
