Who’s the 2006 Dark Horse?

12

by user LastRow

Every possible college football poll has come out, the number system is in place. Now all we need is for these games to be played over the next coming months to figure out who will be crowned National Championship…Or do computers pick the National Champs? At any rate, this is the time of year when every team in the country is on the same level…From the Buckeyes in Columbus to the Owls in Boca Raton, everybody believes they’ll be the best team in the nation at seasons end.

In the reality scheme of things only the Top 25 teams who are ranked in both the AP & Coaches Polls have a realistic chance of becoming the best team in college football…If that? Whether this is fair or unfair, this is life, and life is usually unfair. So deal with it peeps, cause it’s the facts Jack. In looking past the Top 10 in both polls, what could be some dark horses this year that which are currently flying under the radar, has a legitimate shot to capture that oh, so precious Waterford Crystal Football?

At least on paper, these following respective schools pose many of the right ingredients…A veteran quarterback, experienced offensive and defensive lines, proven playmakers, a favorable schedule to put together a championship run, provided some other key areas fall into place. Some are obvious (Ohio State, Notre Dame, West Virginia), some are sleepers (Cal, Clemson, Nebraska) and some are completely off the radar (South Carolina, Georigia Tech,). Understand this, I’m not saying these are the top 16 teams in the country. You'll notice the absence of several seemingly highly regarded teams that may very well have fantastic seasons. It's just that those teams are missing that certain something to make the ultimate run. Now, all these teams here have the basic foundation to go 13-0 yet could just as easily wind up 7-6. That's because everyone is vulnerable this year. Everyone has questions. Only one team (barring another pesky split championship) will be able to answer them all.

Now it’s time for me to show what kind of ONIONS I’ve got by stepping out on a limb and picking a dark horse with a realistic chance of kissing the little cute crystal football at years end. This is very difficult for me to say being a diehard Notre Dame Golden Domer, but I must go with the whore…Ann Arbor. You dirty little girl. Yes, don’t be surprised to see Michigan challenge this season.

Michigan, which is returning a veteran QB (Chad Henne) and a top running back (Mike Hart), and has a strong offensive line. We also think wideout Steve Breaston is primed for a breakout year (if he can learn how to get over the Jeremy Stevens syndrome afraid of catching the flying pigskin a little better). While the Wolverines record last season (7-5) left a lot to be desired, all five losses were by a touchdown or less. If they can get by the Irish, the sky’s the limit for Lloyd’s boys with the last hurdle coming at the Horseshoe in Columbus. Hail to the Victors? By no means am I saying the Maze & Blue are going to win the National Championship…All I’m look for these guys to make some noise during the year because as of now they’re a mute.

So you’ve heard my off the wall prediction…Now, what’s your’s. Some might think my scuttlebutt is preposterous, but hey, I haven’t seen anybody else predict a dark horse to possibly win the ADT Trophy…So now find your own horse, I got mine. Just too bad I don’t know how far this horse will take me? But hey what do I know…I’m just a ticket holder who sits in the LastRow.

Thats whats different about guys like Carroll, and Mack brown. For the most part, they get the guys ready for the big ones. '06 and '05 Rose Bowls and '05 Orange Bowl are prime examples. Guys like Carr have proven they can't win the big one. The jury is still out on Urban Meyer and Charlie Weis.

I have to disagree about Mack Brown. He doesn't get the guys ready to play for the big games. That's why it took a gamer like Vince Young to finally lead a team that SHOULD be a perennial BCS Bowl team to two consecutive BCS bowls. Mack Brown is a terrible coach that takes a lot of talent and fails to develop it. Chris Simms was as good his senior year as his freshman year. Same thing with Cedric Benson, Roy Williams, Derrick Johnson, and others. In all the years Brown has been at UT, the ONLY player I've seen improve from his freshman year was Vince Young.

i can't get how people make predictions for games in November, (e.g. Shrubbery says that Michigan has no shot at beating Ohio State at the shoe.) So many things could happen before that game injuries or losses to name a few. You can only really predict the first few weeks. Thats why I can't stand ESPN's sports center making calls about games in October.

Is that why your pre-season poll was such a joke? Were you trying to make a point? Louisville the number one, West Virginia number 4, your 7-9 are Cal, Nebraska and Arizona State, and you don't even have Texas in the top 25. I really think that your poll in particular will show how absurd pre-season predictions are.

I like Michigan as well. Henne is solid, Mike Hart/Kevin Grady is a great 1-2 punch, and they have good WR with Breaston and Manningham. My off-the-wall prediction is for Texas to repeat as champs. They're loaded with skill players, they return a lot of the defense... the only question is which young, talented QB can emerge and be the starter. If they can get by the Buckeyes (obviously very difficult), I don't see anyone in the Big 12 that's going to beat them.

I agree, Michigan definately has the talent to win it this year. Notre Dame isn't as good as their hyped up to be, and Michigan certainly doesn't want to lose 3 in a row the the Irish. Ohio State will be tough, but like The Beast said, predicting what happens before the season is stupid. Say Troy Smith gets injured, that would make that game a cake walk for Michigan. If it wasn't for Smith, Michigan would have won the past two games against Ohio St.

I don't think Troy Smith even has to get hurt for this season to be a disappointment for the Buckeyes. He's a guy that people keep expecting big things out of, but he doesn't always produce the way they need him to. People always say that OSU would have defeated Texas if Smith had been in the game. Certainly, they looked better when he was in the game, but let's not fool ourselves - he also had plenty of opportunities to get touchdowns, and didn't come through. I think he'd be the most overhyped QB in college football if it weren't for Chris Leak. The comparisons to Vince Young are as stupid as the comparisons of Young to Michael Vick.

Hogwash! When Tressel pulled Smith he had led the Buckeyes back from a 10-0 deficit to a 19-16 lead. It is totally fair to say that game could have gone differently because on Zwick's first possesion after Smith got pulled he fumbled. And Smith has always produced in the big games (save the Penn State game last year against a formidable defense in front of a hostile crowd). Smith has showed up huge in the last two Michigan games and in the Fiesta Bowl against ND. He's a gamer. And overhyped? Until this season he's barely got any recognition. Heck, coming into OSU Zwick was supposed to be the next great OSU QB and Smith worked his butt off and made huge plays to snatch it away from him. I agree that the comparisons to Young are stupid. Smith as a better arm and is more agile than the bigger and faster Young.

Smith has a better arm? You're going to argue that when he has a lower completion percentage than Young? And again, Smith had opportunities late in the game. Some of those drives where they had to settle for field goals were led by Smith. It's POSSIBLE that OSU would have won the game, but it wasn't a given. Like I said, he also had opportunities to win the game, and didn't. Yes, he played BETTER than Zwick, but neither one came through when they needed to.

By the way, I never said the the game wouldn't have gone differently. In fact, I said that they looked better when he was in the game. To be clearer, they played better when he was in the game. I wasn't saying that the game wouldn't have gone differently, but people act like an OSU victory was a foregone conclusion had Tressell stuck with Smith. When, from what I saw and the opportunities that BOTH QBs failed to capitalize on, it seems that victory wasn't a foregone conclusion with either one. Doesn't mean the game wouldn't have gone differently, but that doesn't mean an OSU victory.

I still think Michigan will be a disappointment this year and Carr will get canned in the offseason. Cal is a true sleeper that may suprise this year and I'll also be watching Mr. Bowden's Seminoles. The FSU program is prime for a good season.

Yeah - Michigan's chances of making a run as this article puts it? ZERO. There are three better teams in the Big Ten. Michigan will stumble its way to an 8-win season and another bowl loss, culminating in the departure of Lloyd Carr (which may be the best thing to happen to the program since Ohio State hired John Cooper).

Ummm...Do any of you read Stewart Mandel from Sports Illustrated? The third paragraph from LastRow's article hear is very similar to an article Mandel wrote on SI.com. In fact, some parts are exactly the same. Unless LastRow is Stewart Mandel? Heres the link http://sport...n.bar/1.html

I was going to say West Virginia is my "dark horse" for the title. They're in the top ten, and they have a decent schedule which could see them go unbeaten. Their toughest games look like home vs. Maryland and @ Louisville. Those look to be their two toughest games. Given their starting position in the top 10, I give them a great shot to make the title game. I'm not sure I want to comment on a plagarized story though. Zing!

I don't think a team can be considered a "dark horse" when they start in the top ten and have numerous people saying they're going to make a run at the national championship. A dark horse is an outsider that almost nobody is talking about.
