Who's the best option QB ever

10
Vote

by user Shrubbery

Since the option rushing attacks of yore have gone the way of the DoDo 'tis time to pick the best option quarterback ever. The nominees are...

Jamail Holloway Oklahoma

Darian Hagan Colorado

Tommy Frazier Nebraska

Tony Rice Notre Dame

Charles Thompson Oklahoma

Dee Dowis Air Force

Eric Crouch Nebraska

J.C. Watts Oklahoma

Antwan Randal El Indiana

Charlie Ward Florida St. (more of a hybrid than straight option)

Anyone I'm missing? Let the voting/debate begin.

Tommie Frazier, although it certainly helped that he had guys like Lawrence Phillips and Ahman Green in the backfield with him.

I still say the best option QB's I ever saw were Holloway and Hagan. Those guys were magicians.

Too bad Vince Young wasn't actually an option QB, because he very well may be the best rushing QB in the history of college football. In his three years, he passed for 6,040 yards and rushed for 3,127. He's the only QB in the history of the game to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 in a season. But, back to the subject...I think it's gotta be Tommy Frazier. I tried to find stats, but I couldn't. Without being positive, I think Randle El may actually have better numbers, but if you look at the two play, I don't think there can be any doubt as to who the better athlete is. Frazier was incredible. And as a Husker-hating Texan, that's not easy for me to say.

Frazier was great but as a pure option guy Holloway was more dangerous and Hagan rarely made bad decisions. The one guy who may be better than all was Dee Dowis. That kid NEVER made mistakes.

Vince young isnt even the 1st qb to have 3000 passing 1000 rushing in a season. Woody Danzler had 3000 1000 in early 2000. Danzler is the only QB in history to have 10,000 passing 3,000 rushing

What about Ell Roberson from Kansas State and didn't Brett Basanez (Northwestern) and Alex Smith (Utah) both run the Spread Option.

Holloway and Hagan are 1 and 1a. Anyone remember a play involving Hagan (against K-State maybe?) where him and the option back both made it around end about 40 yards downfield. With one man to beat, Hagan pitched the ball to the back who finished the run, totalling maybe 80ish yard for a TD.

Actually it was against Nebraska. Hagan and J.J. Flanigan made around the end, about 30-40 yards down field Hagan dished to Flanigan, J.J. took it the distance. Very cool play.

I'm not saying he's the best by any means, but what about Woody Dantzler. One year he would have won the Heisman, but he had one awful showing against North Carolina, and that pretty much took him out of the running. Clearly he could not translate to the NFL though.

My order with comments:

1. Dowis (Air Force) - Very quick both with his feet and his decision making. Played with the least talent but had the smartest teammates.

2. Mildren (Oklahoma) - Had the advantage of it being new (the wishbone) and did have ridiculous help (Crosswhite and Pruitt).

3. Hagan (Colorado) and Holloway (Oklahoma) - I put them 3rd because I truly question the legitmacy of the programs that they played for and the criminal element that existed. I hardly consider their programs part of college football.

4. Cromwell (Kansas). They were awful until they moved him their as a junior (to QB). Great player who went onto All-Pro Safety status as a Ram.

5. Tony Rice (Notre Dame). They have not been nearly as good as they were since him. End of discussion about that place (though old Lou was violating rules there - so......it was hardly the Notre Dame Halo school everyone thinks it is today).

    • This was about true triple option guys from underneath not the spread read of today out of the gun. If that is the question it is Tebow and the rest of the pack.

Thanks,

New Jersey Coach

I never saw anyone run the the triple option better than Dowis who also was a passing threat when needed.
