Who's the World's Best Soccer Player?

16

by Ea34

I recently spent some time thinking about who is the best footballer in the world. Considering physical gifts/technique, individual statistics and team success, I was able to narrow the field down to three candidates: Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United, AC Milan ’s Kaká and Didier Drogba of Chelsea. Let’s be clear, these are not the only players that warrant consideration, but I felt these were the three top candidates based on 2006-07 results and overall form during the season. Based on the above criteria, a strong case can be made for each of these three players.

Cristiano Ronaldo

  • Was the top player for the 2006-07 English Premier League Champions
  • Scored 24 goals in 49 games in all competitions (Premiership, Champions League, FA Cup, Carling Cup) for Manchester United
  • Placed third with 17 goals in the English Premier League
  • Won the Professional Footballers’ Association awards for Best Player and Best Young Player
  • Has evolved his game from all-flash-all-the-time to a far more “functionally spectacular” style of play

Kaká

  • Scored 18 goals in 46 games in all competitions ( Italian Serie A, Champions League, Coppa Italia) for AC Milan
  • Led AC Milan to the Champions League title, scoring a staggering 10 goals in just 14 games in the competition, which made him the top scorer in the Champions League
  • Was named the 2006-07 UEFA Champions League Fans Player of the Season
  • In two Champions League Semi-final ties against Manchester United, he scored three world-class goals. Two of these goals were not only spectacular, but also doubly valuable, as they were scored in Milan’s away tie at Old Trafford.
  • Played a role in both of Milan’s goals in the Champions League Final against Liverpool, despite being the marked man on the pitch. Just before halftime, he made a run, and was subsequently fouled, resulting in the free kick that led to the first goal. In the second half, his beautiful through-ball to Pippo Inzaghi set up Milan’s second, and title-clinching. goal

Didier Drogba

  • Scored 33 goals in 54 games in all competitions (Premiership, Champions League, FA Cup, Carling Cup, Community Shield) for Chelsea
  • Led the English Premier League with 20 goals
  • He scored the lone goal in the 116 th minute of Chelsea’s 1-0 FA Cup Final victory against Manchester United at the New Wembley Stadium
  • Won the English Golden Boot and African Footballer of the Year awards
  • After being criticized in the past for inconsistency and diving in the box. He’s learned to utilize his awesome size and strength, as well as his surprising quickness, inside the penalty area to become the Premiership’s deadliest striker.
  • Member of the 2006-07 Carling Cup winning Chelsea side

After looking at all of this, my inclination is to say that Kaká is deserving of the title of World’s Best Footballer. After all, he was clearly the best player in the most prestigious club competition in the world, which his team won. His virtuoso performance against United in both ties of the Semi-final was absolutely incredible. Finally, his Milan side does not have the depth of talent of either Manchester United or Chelsea. With Kaká in the top spot, how do the other two shake out? Here’s where I kinda surprised myself.

Disclaimer: Although I watch a lot of EPL matches, the only football team that I am a FAN of is FC Barcelona. I don’t like Chelsea and Manchester United is my favorite Premiership team to watch.

I neither wanted to, nor thought I’d end up doing this, but my vote for #2 footballer in the world goes to Didier Drogba. Drogba’s development has been nothing short of phenomenal. After enduring a lot of criticism in his time at Chelsea, he has transformed himself into the best pure goal-scorer in the world. His great goal-scoring record, coupled with Chelsea’s Carling Cup and FA Cup titles, puts his season on par with Ronaldo’s campaign with United.

Finally, there’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Ironically, he’s my favorite player of the three. Ronaldo, who was spectacular as usual, had his finest scoring season with United and was vital in helping secure the Premiership title. Maybe I penalized him for having just a consistently excellent season, but without a true “defining moment”, like Kaká’s domination of the Champions League or Drogba’s clutch goal to clinch the FA Cup.

What do you guys think? Which of these is the world’s best footballer? Are there others I should have considered?

Hmmmm C.Ronaldo and Drogba i don't think they are that good, C.ronaldo loves to cry in games and usually don't love to pass the ball to his team mates, so when you say team work he ain't good at it, Drogba, well he's an okay player..i kept on asking people about who is the best player as well never heard about Drogba, However Kaka yes he does play very good, i think another player with an amazing overall is Robinho.

I strongly believe that Robinho has a great opportunity to be the best player in the world one day, but he has not fulfilled his amazing potential yet.

I agree! Especially as a Barca fan. But despite scoring a lot of goals, Ronaldinho was not in top form last season and Thierry Henry was saddled with injuries. But I agree, either of them could be the best player in the world. given the performance of these three over the past season, right now it is their time.

Seriously..of these 3 Players i think KaKa deserves it...because he is an Overall Player he can score goals and also Create them...he can pass, shoot and Volley the ball has Great Vision of the players and field...can Run which means he is in amazing form...but i would like to point out that Drogba didnt single handed score the goal against Man Utd but Lampard Crossed the ball in perfectly which he scored on..

Your point is very well taken (and I agree). Drogba's the kind of player that does need to be set up inside the box, but this past season he became what I think is the world's most consistent finisher around the net.

on that note i think people are over looking Francesco Totti from Roma and Fernando Torres formerly of Atlético Madrid now on liverpool who scored a total of 56 goals last year (38 for Atlético Madrid and 18 for spain *3 in world cup*

are you trying to say Totti and Torres don't dive?

goal scoring is one measure of a player, but not the only one.

(so you know, I support Roma in Italy and think Torres is a very good prospect--but neither of those players had a season nearly as good a season as the other 3 mentioned IMO)

I think of the two players from the prem--as a united fan this kills me to say--Drogba was a more crucial player for Chelsea than Ronaldo was for United. I'm thinking mostly of the FA cup final. United palyed mildly better football than the blues, but it was Drogba's individual skill that won out on the day--as it did on at least another 5 occasions last season in the prem. Unfortunately for United, the two r's really didn't show up for the match. That being said, I think Kaka was the best last season out of those 3.

I agree that Ronaldinho is the world's most talented player, and one of the 5 or 6 best right now, and I expect him to be in the top 2 for Footballer of the Year next season. Even as a fan, i couldn't bring myself to put him in the top 3 following such a disappointing Word Cup and then a disappointing La Liga season. His goal-scoring was fantastic, but he was not the dominant playmaker that he's been in previous years. Based only on their performances since the beginning of the World Cup, i would even have to place Lionel Messi (who could make this entire conversation moot this season!) ahead of Ronaldinho.

Interesting. I'm choosing between my two favorite players. I tend to lean toward Messi, as he strikes as a more efficient, and almost as spectaculr player. Frankly, there is no wrong decision there.

I'm not the biggest football fan, but I've heard that Robinho is amazing. Christino Ronaldo is selfish, from what I've heard and seen. Ronaldinho is a great team player, and can do just about everything. I personally think it's hard to tell who the very best is. He'd probably have to do everything for the team, and has to be very clutch. Out of those 3, I'd say Kaka does it best. He doesn't only have good defense, but he helps his team score goals. But asking who the best soccer player is is very hard to ask; it's like asking who is better: Joe Montana or Walter Payton? You can't tell because they're two different positions. MVP is different.

Agreed. Comparing across positions is difficult, because the only statistical comparison to use would be goals, which are terribly misleading. The best way to judge a different players' quality reagrdless of position is to watch them play and see there overall impact on the flow of the game.

i believe that the worlds best football player is...... Stephen Bywater. Best keeper in the world. He easily beats competition of Cech, Buffon and others because of his shear determination and skill. A player like that should be in the Barcelona starting eleven. Its only his defence that lets this genius down. He should be Sir Steven Bywater.
