Who's the Best Soccer Commentator? How About the Worst?

OK people, who is the best English speaking Play-by-play guy for soccer (football)? I know you're tempted to say the Spanish commentators because of the GGGGOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! No, I won't let you. It can be from America (but you won't see me picking anyone from here though), England, Canada, Australia, you name it.

For me, it's a tough one, watching the English Premier League all season long, and the FA Cup highlights on Youtube, I'd go with Martin Tyler. He's the tops among the likes of John Motson, Ian Darke, and Clive Tyldesley. Clive is way too obvious of a Manchester United supporter, Ian Darke doesn't get that many games on TWI, and John Motson works for the BBC, so I'll never see him call a full game.

The worst commentator? Well, it's a tie between Max Bretos and Dave O'Brien. I can't stand Bretos, when a goal is scored, he goes into a condescending YYYEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! I'd prefer to stab myself in the ear than listen to that. Dave O'Brien? He was so bad in the World Cup with ESPN, that a petition was signed to get rid of him. I hate those "human interest" stories or irrelevant stats he spews out, like "Steven Gerrard on average, takes 90 pills of Viagra per month". Now that one was made up, but you get the idea. Note to Dave, that stuff might work in that other sport you announce in baseball, but their aren't any breaks in the action until halftime in soccer.

Alright public, now it's your turn, pick your best and worst footy commentators. Don't care who he/she is, or what team he/she announces for, just pick.

O'Brien sucks a lot. I agree with you there.

I think everyone except the people who employ him agree that O'Brien is awful, simply awful. The combination with him and Marcelo was brutal. My favorite was him breaking out his high school Spanish and absolutely butchering and putting extra FLOURISH on names like RAMOS!!!!! and KAKA!!!!! every time they touched the ball.

I have grown out of custom with English language announcers watching the Gold Cup on Spanish language TV. It's fun to listen to the goal calls, and you know exactly when something happened by how loud it just got (great when your computer faces the opposite direction of the TV like mine!).

Martin Tyler is the best. He and Andy Gray cover games very well. very insightful, esp. when you're in a basketball-mad country like ours --- the philippines

Martin Tyler is definitely the best. I can never forget his commentary for the Inter vs Sampdoria match in the 1990-91 season which literally decided the Serie A title. He went hysteric when Gianluca Pagliuca saved a Lothar Matthaus penalty, and found reprieve and joy when Gianluca Vialli finally sealed it. A heart-stopping match, and an unforgettable commentary.

Did any of these pople even bother to listen to the later stages of the Cup? O'brien was terrific in the Final, and many matches leading up it it. Great voice, build-up, drama. Superb. Pretty sure ABC was nominated for an Emmy because of that. The Brits here want an announcer with an accent. Too bad. American don't. Martin Tyler gives nothing.

Martin Tyler is definitely the best English speaking commentator in football today---the worst? easy--those two dorks on ESPN, Tommy Smyth (I'd like to put a bulge in the back of his old "onion bag" with a pickaxe) and Derek Rae, the Scottish drama queen. These two boneheads have ruined every Champions League game I've ever seen in the USA with their utter drivel---I would love to know if there's a way to sync up a live game on ESPN with a Martin Tyler commentary--it's unlikely but I can dream.
