Who's going to the playoffs in the National League?

I already have you all of my AL Playoff thoughts, so I figured I may as well give my predictions for the National League, because that's just how I roll. Or something.

EAST
New York Mets: -

CENTRAL
St. Louis Cardinals: -
Cincinnati Reds: 3.5 GB
Milwaukee Brewers: 7.0 GB
Houston Astros: 7.5 GB

WEST
San Diego Padres: -
Arizona Diamondbacks: 3.0 GB
San Francisco Giants: 3.5 GB
Los Angeles Dodgers: 3.5 GB
Colorado Rockies: 5.0 GB

WILCARD
Cincinnati: -
Arizona: 2.5 GB
San Francisco: 3.0 GB
Los Angeles: 3.0 GB
Milwaukee: 3.5 GB
Houston: 4.0 GB
Colorado: 4.5 GB
Atlanta: 5.0 GB

First off, the East. Personally, I'll eat my hat if the Mets don't win that division. Not only do they have a commanding lead at this point, but they have the best and most balanced offense in the League, solid starting pitching, and a good bullpen. Atlanta is playing and 11.5 back, but it's not going to happen. Sorry. Mets win the division.

The Central is where it gets more interesting. Everyone seems to have conceded the division to the Cardinals all year long, and frankly, I don't see anyone overtaking them short of another Albert Pujols injury. Pujols is good enough to carry the offense at times, and they do have some solid starting pitching. There are definite concerns, but I'm not sure that the other teams in the division have enough to contend. If Ben Sheets and Tomo Ohka come back healthy and contribute for the Brew Crew, I may reconsider, but until that time I'm sticking with the Cardinals.

The West, is where things are really tight, mostly because none of the teams are really very good. Look at San Diego - their 'ace' pitcher coming into the year has struggled, they're 14th in the league in runs scored... and they lead the division by 3 games. I tried to prject this one back in mid-May, and things haven't changed a whole lot since then. I predicted the Dodgers back then, and I'll pick them again right now, if only because I think they've had some bad luck and struggled a lot in 1-run games, which tends to even out. But really, this division is up for the taking.

When it comes to the Wildcard, you could really just pick out of a hat. Even the Florida Marlins, at 41-50, could conceivably have a shot at it if they went on a nice winning streak (they're only 7 back right now). It's really a whole lot of mediocrity. For the Reds, while I thought their last trade was pretty awful, it might be ok in the short run because it should make their bullpen ok whie not taking too much out of the offense. Every team in the West has a shot, and the Braves in the East are streaking like they always seem to do. Still, I'm going to go with the team that in the recent history has made a living off of second-half domination, and that is Houston. The pitching isn't as good as last year, but Roger Clemens and Roy Oswalt is a pretty darn awesome 1-2 combo. Offensively, things need to be better, but getting Huff was a good start. I'll take the Astros in the Wilcard.

So there you have it: New York, St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Houston. Feel free to bring this back up when they're all wrong at the end of the year!

Not a bad set of teams you picked. I was watching the Braves game today, I could see the Braves coming back for the wildcard, 5 games isn't really too much, escpecially with the streak they are on now. I think the division has to go to the Mets though. Nice picks.

I think the important thing for the Astros will be what trades they manage to complete before the deadline. They're still looking for a bullpen arm, since nobody in their bullpen is really performing this year. Springer and Borkowski have been okay. Qualls has presentable numbers, but anyone who's watched him this year has probably seen him totally blow it on a fairly regular basis. Lidge's problems have been well-chronicled, and Wheeler hasn't been the same since the World Baseball Classic. It'll be interesting to see what they can get and what they have to give up for it, because getting a bullpen arm would be HUGE for them. How Ensberg and Backe play when they get off the DL will also be crucial.

Oh, and if Garner has ANY sense at all (which it's not been my experience that he does, but still...) he'll call up Humberto Quintero to catch some towards the end of the season. He'd be a big improvement over Ausmus or Munson.

Really, besides the revenue from TV and merchandise, what other reason does the NL teams have for making the playoffs. They have NO shot at winning the World Series this year. They will be like lambs being led to the slaughterhouse.

Again, they said the same thing in 2001 and 2003. That's why they play the games.

The NL has no shot! Just like in 1980, 1981, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2003...

What leads you to believe the Phillies have a better team than the Braves? Even with their horrendous pitching this season, the Braves are 9th in the NL with an ERA of 4.67. The Phillies are 14th with an ERA of 4.83. The Braves are third in the NL in batting average. The Phillies are 15th, just .001 point ahead of the last place Astros. The Braves are first in the NL in RBI and second in runs. The Phillies are 7th in both categories. On top of that, the Braves are ahead of the Phillies by one game in the division. What gives you the impression the Phillies are better than the Braves?

Yes and no... the AL is clearly superior, but in a 7 game series, it's basically a crapshoot. Anything can happen.

I think the Braves got the wildcard, the Astros just don't have the hitting...also even with the West basically being open for grabs, I'm still going to pick the Padres to take the division again...especially after watching the Cards dismantle the Dodgers in a 4 game sweep

Astros don't have the hitting and the Braves don't have the pitching. That's why it's all still up in the air. Every NL team has glaring flaws right now.

I like your thinking, cpcp. There's nothing you could do about the bullpen, but I like a rotation with Clemens, Pettitte, Oswalt, Smoltz and Hudson. You got Berkman at first base, Biggio at second, Renteria at short stop, Jones or Betemit at third, McCann behind the plate, and Huff, AJones and Francoeur in the outfield. That's not too bad at all.

Come on who voted me down for giving the Braves the WC...there is absolutely no reason why that can't win it...I don't even like the braves but i recognize the potential that isn't there in Houston and certainly nowhere in the West. Atlanta or Milwaukee and that's a stretch

Why does no one comment on the team leading the wild card race currently. Does everyone agree the Reds stink?

Because the Reds are not for real. Even with an 8 game slide by St. Louis the Reds couldn't take the division. Not to mention the real competition in the central division is coming from milwaukee...they've been hot and look to be a real contender for the WC and for the division title in the next couple seasons.
