Who's going to the playoffs in the American League?

As of this writing, things are pretty tight in all races, as I suppose it is to be expected at this time of year. Let's look at the standings and potential winners of each race:

EAST WEST CENTRAL
Team GB Team GB Team GB
Boston Red Sox - Oakland Athletics - Detroit Tigers -
NY Yankees 1.5 Texas Rangers - Chicago White Sox 4.5
Toronto Blue Jays 4.5 LA Angels 1.5 Minnesota Twins 12.0
Seattle Mariners 4.5

WILDCARD
Team GB
Chicago White Sox -
New York Yankees 4.5
Toronto Blue Jays 7.0
Minnesota Twins 7.5

First let's get the AL West out of the way, because there's definitely only going to be one team in the playoffs from that division. Before the year I picked the A's to win the whole shebang, but now, well, I'm definitely have second thoughts. The pitching hasn't been that good, Rich Harden is never healthy, and they've had disappointments on offense (namely, the left side of the infield). Meanwhile, the Angels look to be moving up. They potentially have one of the top rotations in baseball (don't look now, but John Lackey is turning himself into a Cy Young contender). I like the Angels to take the West, especially if they let some of the young hitters play.

Next we move to the East, where it's sorta the same old song and dance. Sure, the Blue Jays are a very nice team, and they have the best starter in the division, but they need AJ Burnett to stay healthy, and I'm not betting on that. Which leaves the Sox and the Yanks. Historically, the Yanks almost always seem to come out ahead, and I like them to do it again and take the division. For one, look at the pitching. The Sox are led by Curt Schilling (who was impressive Saturday), but after that they have a struggling Josh Beckett, Tim Wakefield, a rookie in Jon Lester, and Kyle Snyder (who is pitching tomorrow). Sure, Matt Clement is on the DL right now, but he's been pretty awful so far this year.

The Yanks don't have anyone of Schilling's caliber, but Mussina has been pretty darn solid this year. Behind him, Johnson and Wang aren't exactly going to make anyone too confident, but they're solid. Jaret Wright has also been surprising capable so far this year. I'm not too high on Sidney Ponson in the AL, but the other 4 are better than the Red Sox 4 right now, IMO. Offensively, it's close to a wash, although the Sox do have an advantage with Sheff and Matsui still out (any idea when they'll be back). Neither bullpen (other than the closers) inspire much confidence either. If you force me to make a pick, I'll go with the Yankees, but I'm not overly confident about it.

In the Central, the Tigers seem to never lose, which makes them difficult to catch. Even more, they've been exceptional on the road with a 33-19 mark. The Sox are 4.5 back, but they've still got a deep pitching staff, and with Jim Thome on the club (and Jermaine Dye having an excellent year), the lineup is more potent that last year. The Tigers pitching staff has been pretty dominant, but I think they're bound to slow down some. Kenny Rogers always struggles in the second half, and his low SO totals are a little worrisome. Verlander's always not striking out enough batters. (Although in the Tigers defense, I think Jeremy Bonderman has gotten a little unlucky and we might see his ERA drop some). What does all this mean? It means I've got a weak vote cast for the White Sox to take the Central.

Which brings us down to the Wildcard, usually the most exciting race of them all. With my divisional picks, this would leave the Tigers, Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Twins in the mix. As much as I'd love for the Twins to win this - and they do have the pitching at the top to do it - I think the hole is a little too deep, and they don't have quite the offensive firepower to crawl back. The Blue Jays have the offensive firepower, but I don't think they have quite the pitching depth to come back.

Which leaves the Tigers and the Red Sox. For reasons mentioned above, I like the Tigers pitching staff better (although it's really time to put Rodney/Zumaya in the closer's role), and I like the Sox better offensively. In this case, I think pitching wins, and I have to give the Tigers the Wildcard.

So there you have it: the Yankees, White Sox, and Angels as your division winners, with the Tigers winning the Wildcard. Although I'm not putting any money on it. These should all be some fantastic races to watch down the stretch.

Good article, but I find it hard to believe that anyone would seriously consider the Yankees to have the better pitching staff. Both team's rotations have been inconsistent, and Boston has to have the edge in that. They have two certifiable aces in Beckett and Schill. Beckett has struggled a bit lately, but he'll be fine. Plus, Jon Lester is better than several of the veterans in the New York rotations.

No offense, but Beckett's an ace? His ERA's over 5, his K/BB ratio is lower than his career averages, he's giving up lots of HR, and his ERA is getting worse by the month. If he can recover his form from last year or even from May, I think the Red Sox have the edge, but that is far from a sure thing. Lester has been very good, though the high BB is a little worrying at the moment. But you're right, he has very good stuff.

Beckett's sure more of an ace than Randy.

Based on what? ERA? Johnson's slightly ahead there. K/BB ratio? Johnson's ahead there. Keeping the ball in the park? Once again, Johnson has the edge there. Both have been equally disappointing in my book.. neither of them is close to an ace at this point.

The Chciago White Sox are 4.5 games back right now...BUT, after Tuesday I think it will be 3 less. I'm looking for the Sox to sweep the Tigers. Disagree if you must, its a feeling and I'm sticking with it. Sox to take the AL Central.

I think the Angels could give some of these other AL teams a scare in the playoffs, assuming the take the AL West. They should take the West since Oakland can't score runs, the Angels even get more than them. If the Angels do get a bat watch out! If they can aquire Soriano or Tejada, which is a strong possibility, the Angels could find themselves playing even deeper into October. Both of these guys also know AL pitching. Watch out Red Sox, White Sox, and Tiger fans, the Angels are hot, 10 out of 11, now.

Yeah, but they won't be in October, so it's not an issue.

Heh, I'd like to cast some more confident votes, but all of these races are so tight it's hard to do! :) (and in the past couple days they've just gotten closer!)

How DARE you leave the Indians off the list of people that could go to the playoffs! You don't think at least a few of them can afford tickets?!

I really wish I could make an argument for the Rangers here, but they've been pathetic lately. They beat the Orioles 15-1 in their first game after the break. The next game, just mustered just two runs on two sac flies. In the last three games, they have scored just two runs. TWO. How can a team with a lineup like that have such a pathetic offense?

By the way, I don't think the Tigers will fall back into the Wild Card spot. I know the White Sox look a lot better on paper, but they just got swept by the Yankees and have now lost five out of their last six to fall 4.5 games back in the division. And although it might be unfair to make the comparison, considering the Tigers have played the Mariners and the Royals in their last two series, they continue to win (6 out of their last 8). I think the Tigers take the division and the White Sox get the WC.

Yeah, and I think this series coming up will have a huge impact as far as the mindset of the clubs. This is uncharted territory for the Tigers, so if they come out and win the series, I like their chances a lot more. It'll be very interesting.
