Who's Now? Don't ask us

by user C.Bothe

Until recently I had heard of the ESPN little game/tournament who's now on sportscenter but I never paid much attention to it, just thought it was something weird. However when I saw that the next matchup was going to be Ronaldinho against Kobe I started paying attention. I voted and watched the video and saw that all 3 of the experts picked Kobe, which I understood but didn't think it mattered much what they thought. I looked today to see the results and Kobe beat Ronaldinho which didn't I understood because I really thought Ronaldinho would win it.

I started reading how everything worked and saw that the panel's 3 votes were worth 30% of the total. Which looking at the results means that the viewers/sports fans voted for Ronaldinho 39.2- 30.8. Look at all the fans vote so far that went against the panel (out of 70%) LT- 40.8% over Becks 29.2% (LT won 50.8-49.2) (panel 2-1 Becks) Nash 47% over Serena 23 % (Nash won 57-43) (panel 2-1 Serena) Liddell 38.3% over Dale jr. 31.7% (Dale Jr won 61.7-38.3) (panel 3-0 Dale Jr) Ronaldinho 39.2% over Kobe 30.8% (Kobe wins 60.8-39.2) (panel 3-0 Kobe)

Looking at these results says that the majority of the time the public disagrees with the panel but can only push them forward so much.

I am a fan of Wilbon, Johnson, and Herbstreet, most of the time these guys are know exactly what they are talking about. However, the results of this tournament shouldn't matter so much with what they think because who's now should actually depend on fans vote. For fans to only get 70% of the vote on something that is based on off-field buzz (fans would know more about that then people actually inside sports) and on the field accomplishments which people inside sports would probably know more about. So they get 30% of the vote; I would understand 10% since its not hard for us the fans to compare each participants stat in their respective sport. Also, when you look at the panel we have a former NFL player, a former College player/College, and a primarly NBA sports writer. Where is the diversity in this group; where is a baseball guy or someone who covers something other than those two sports?

This series currently on ESPN is bogus and really doesn't give the fans enough say; if the panel even votes 2-1 it basically gives one participant a huge advantage no matter how the fans vote on the matchup even if we the fans try to pick who actually is now rather than who ESPN thinks is now. So please I'm just telling you now don't go waste your time on this because what you think matters for not much at all.

I think the weighting system they use is fair and correct. to have 70% of the vote is more than fair, it sounds like to me that you voted for a lot of the people that really didn't have a chance to advance. Just my opinion.
