Who's Backing Up the Backup?

by Brendan.Canney

The Atlanta Falcons, in the wake of the Mike Vick dog fighting debacle, are now putting their faith (and I use that word loosely) in the hands of underachieving Joey Harrington. Battling for the backup position was 5 year veteran Chris Redman and 2nd year player DJ Shockley. Well, that battle got a lot easier for Redman. It was learned today that DJ Shockley tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee and suffered damage to his medial collateral ligament in Friday night's preseason victory over the Buffalo Bills.

During the two preseason games in which Shockley played he completed 9 of his 17 passes for 123 yards. He also rushed 4 times for a total of 19 yards. Shockley injured himself during the 4th quarter of the Bills game on a scramble in which he gained 10 yards but went down in obvious pain when the play was over. He was promptly carted off the field and Chris Redman came in to finish the game. The only other quarterback presently on the roster is Casey Bramlet who has yet to take a regular season snap. Bramlet led the Hamburg Sea Devils to a 37-28 victory over Frankfurt Galaxy in World Bowl XV in which he was named the game's most valuable player.

It was believed that Chris Redman had the backup position well in hand even before Shockley went down with his injury. Redman had played under the tutelage of then OC of the Louisville Cardinals, Bobby Petrino, who now happens to be the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. And to think that most people feel the Falcons are in trouble with Harrington at quarterback, what would happen to this team if he were to go down? Get ready for a long season Falcons fans.

Rumor has it the eagles are looking to trade Kelly Holcomb to the Falcons...as bad as this is to say, from a "business" standpoint, I'm glad Shockley went down, the eagles can now get some value for Holcomb...

Speaking of the Eagles, did it ever make sense to anyone that the Eagles take Kolb when we signed AJ, Holcomb and had then Eagle Koy Detmer? Sometimes their front office thinks too hard.

The Falcons are dead. None of this would've happened if they were thinking outside of the box, and realizing that Vick won't always be around. Drew Bledsoe it is.

Actually Detmer wasn't on the team (he was cut last summer, Johnson held the kicks)...they had McNabb, Feeley and Holcomb (who was acquired via trade) and had just let Garcia walk...

I wasn't sure why they took holcomb, but i think Buffalo either made them take him or they saw value and/or needed a 3rd QB to complete with Feeley. However, I did expect the eagles to take a QB in the draft...even 2nd round didn't totally suprise me (I was a little suprised, but once Meriweather went off the board...well and ross and revis), I kinda expected a surprise...I just didn't see Kevin Kolb being it...

Of course, this same train of thought was applied when they drafted Lito Shepperd and Sheldon Brown in the same draft...(even though they have vincent and taylor)...damn...did that work out?

Eagles are expected to trade Kelly in the next week or two for a second day draft pick. Hopefully, it will be a 4th rounder.

Oh, I know they let Detmer go but why not keep him? I mean him and Akers had great chemistry, he knew the offense, and why not keep a guy who had been around so long. Hell, he probably could have mentored Kolb so that McNabb could concentrate on rehab and getting comfortable again with the offense.

Perhaps...i think more than anything, they liked Feeley better (he's a better QB and i trust him more...) and they wanted to draft a QB this season (the slew of mid-level talent at QB was there)...that's 3 spots...holcomb was a throw in on the Spikes deal... I agree, Detmer was a good holder (If you can be that)...but you gotta look at that seriously...sure he was good at it and it made Akers comfortable, but that's a whole roster spot just to do that (and you have to make him the backup QB, which has its own implications...such as not allowing the 3rd QB in the game until the 4th quarter, etc)...If you can get the punter to hold, you save a roster spot...All Philly fans liked Koy...and the moxy he showed in 1997/8...but it was time to move on...

You can be a bad holder, just ask Tony Romo. While I agree it probably was time for Detmer to leave, his intangibles were great for the team and I'll miss him as an Eagle.

I think we all have a special spot in our hearts for Koy...certainly one of those QBs who did a whole lot with very little... I mean, the guy didn't take anything except a toothbrush on road trips...he claims he just went to a local k-mart and bought clothes each time...it was easier

Wow, and to think I thought this was about the Falcons QB situation and not the Eagles... By the way, who the Falcons 3rd QB is is not quite as pressing as who the STARTING QB is going to be.

Hence the problem MJD... Uhh...and considering the rumors about a pending trade between the eagles and falcons involving a QB...i think it merits mentioning...

I'm just having a little fun with you. Plus, 10 comments about Kelly Holcomb/Koy Detmer? That is more than either deserves, especially in an article about DJ Shockley.

Does anyone know the injury report on Shockley? I thought this kid showed some potential while quarterbacking in Georgia.

haha.... yeah ACL tears are a solid (SOLID) 10 months, but more likely Shockley won't see the field to next year regardless...if he ever sees the field again...
