Whither Alex Gonzalez?

Lugo's offense has not balanced his awful defense thus far.

The Boston Red Sox made a big gamble this offseason by letting light-hitting but defensive wizard Alex Gonzalez leave for the Cincinnati Reds while signing Julio Lugo to man shortstop. They hoped that Lugo's offense would outweigh the liability he represented in the field, but so far that has not been the case. Lugo has been both a liability in the field and at the plate (and in the leadoff spot to boot), and Red Sox fans are concerned. Gonzalez was not a complete tragedy at the plate and had his fair share of clutch hits once he got going last year, and Curt Schilling called him in no uncertain terms one of the finest shortstops he ever played with.

It's early, so Lugo could very well come around soon and live up to the big contract Boston gave him. However, I'm worried and was never real big on that signing in the first place. What are your thoughts? Did the Red Sox make a mistake? Their defense has been the complete opposite of last year, when as a team they turned in one of the best defensive seasons in history.

I think I'm going to hold my tongue on this one, except to say that fielding percentage isn't everything when evaluating team defense (our defensive efficiency was bad last year and is actually good this year), Lugo is actually +3 FRAA with a .269 EqA this year (not a liability by any stretch of the imagination), his .354 OBP is 55 points higher than Gonzalez's was last year, and no one could have predicted that Gonzalez -- coming off a year in which he was overrated afield (-5 FRAA) and horrible at the plate (.233 EqA) -- would be OPSing .828 so far this season. I defy Gonzo to keep hitting at that clip. Sure, the Lugo move wasn't the smartest in the world, but I'd give it more time.

Lugo's zone rating is also significantly higher than Gonzalez's. Add to that the fact that Lugo's suffering from bad BABIP luck (.288 this year vs. .323 career) and Gonzo's enjoying crazy good BABIP luck (.349 in 2007 vs. .288 career), and I think it's pretty safe to assume that the natural order will be restored soon: Lugo = good hitter/solid gloveman, Gonzo = bad hitter/overrated gloveman.

But, like I said, I'm going to hold my tongue on the subject. :)
