Which records need to be broken by total scrubs?

Topic: The Sports fans' love affair with records... we all are guilty to some degree.

Let's be objective for a sec... some records are over-worshipped. DiMaggio's 56-game hitting straek for instance. Everyone knows '56'. But seriously, what is the true value of a hit streak? Unless your team goes 56-0 during the 56 game hit streak, it's merely a shiny, happy number adored by people who neglect common sense. You could even bat .185 during a 56 game hit streak, afterall. Wouldn't it be great if some total scrub came along and destroyed a hallowed record.

Imagine Tony Blomack came back and ran off a 75-game hit streak? Or if Russ Ortiz struck out 25 batters in a game, if Matt Stairs hits 6 Home Runs in one game. I know some of you would LOVE to see something along the lines of Omar Vizquel dumping #74 into McCovey Cove... or Alex Rodriguez destroying Bob Brenly's 4 error inning at 3B. Adam Dunn winning a batting title with a .445 batting average?

Imagine Aaron Brooks throwing for 7,500 yards this season, Kurt Warner having a 300 yards rushing game or Terreldorad Owens kicking a 68 yard field goal.

How about Ben Wallace hitting 250 straight free throws, Earl Boykins getting 60 rebounds in one game or watching Rasho Nesterovic average 20 assists per game for a whole 82 game season.

It's kinda like Roger Maris coming out of nowhere to have a magical 61, Johnny Van Der Meer throwing back to back no-no's, Fernando Tatis' 2 grand Slam inning, Timmy Smith's Super Bowl game or Rennie Stennett getting 7 hits in one game!

What are the records that need to be destroyed by total scrubs so sports fans can finally gain some true perspective on things???

Failing to provide any suggestions, feel free to share your favorite freek record breakers not already mentioned!

I would like to see some scrub QB just shatter the 556-yard game. Like if Charlie Frye's Browns get down 40-0 after the first quarter and he ends up 56-90 for 677 yards and 8 TD's.

Cal ripken. Put a schmoe it at 1B for the first out of every game for the requisite number of games. I hate the fact that one of the greatest players of all time played until a disease robbed him of his game lost his record to me first Cal.

this is crap... all I remember was that after baseball came back in 1995, Cal spent hours after every game signing for anyone who wanted an autograph at Camden. He was one of the true reasons baseball returned to prominence the way it did. Cal might have been "me first" for part of his career, but he really reached out to the fans after the strike.

If I recall, games didn't count in Ripken's streak until the middle of the fifth inning. If we took the take-him-out-in-the-first-inning approach, it wouldn't work. While I agree with the opinion that some records are over-hyped, Cal's consecutive games played streak is not one of them. It's a testament to hard work and a never-ending passion for the game of baseball...not to mention a mark of longevity and good health.

Yeah, but he probably would have put up better numbers late into the season if he took a day off every so often.

games aren't counted for official stats until the completion of the 5th inning. If you hit 5 home runs in the first 4 innings and it starts to rain, the game is called and NONE of the stats count. If you come back tomorrow and hit 6 home runs in 5 or more innings in a tie game and it starts to rain and the game gets called. the stats count. That's how Cal Ripken played in 163 games in 1996. You only need to be on the umpires card and official scorekeeper's book to count for playing in a game. You can get picked off of first as a pinch runner and count for playing in the game. Even if no pitch was used. You could also be DH for a home team on the scorecard, but get hurt by a fouled off ball while you're in the batter's box, which then in most leagues, the pitcher would be forced to bat. You can't subout a DH with a position player, but you could do double switches to keep your pitcher from hitting.

How about Kaz Matsui breaking Cal Ripken's record for consecutive games played by pinch-running or pinch-hitting and not starting once?

What if, next year, David Ortiz hit a home run in his ninth consecutive game (Don Mattingly) to give himself a hit in 57 consecutive games (Joe Dimaggio) and 74 HRs on the season (Barry Bonds) and he hit it off Randy Johnson to hand the Big Unit his 28th consecutive loss of the season (Anthony Young). Do you think then the Yanks would throw at him his next time up?

I would only be impressed if Papi also took over the closer role, allowing Papelbon to start. Of course, Jeter would still be favored to win the MVP.

How about Shaq breaking the record for season free throw percentage? Michelle Wie winning 30 PGA majors. Natalie Gulbis winning a wet T-shirt contest. Anna Kournikova winning a banana eating contest. Jose Canseco pitching 35 wins in the majors.

ok, Anna Kournikova throws a no-hitter while slowly eating a hot dog, then never pitches again but goes on to successfully kick 30 straight 75+ yard field goals in the Super Bowl, THEN makes thousands of hours of homemade porn with Maria Sharapova, Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johanssen.
