Which nation is the best at sport?
Well... this is an idea I came up with an hour or so ago...
We could construct a table of the Sporting World Champions. It would work by taking international sporting events and awarding gold, silver and bronze "medals". Then keep a medal count of each one.
Peruse the below, and suggest improvements that could be made in the comments. Also if there are glaring ommissions I have made in terms of sports in the composition. Also, if you see a sporting event you want me to add, let me know so I can add it!
There shall be one medal set per gender per sport, unless the sport is competed in by both men and women.
Soverignity issues:
- Great Britain shall be a nation, in the case of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales being teams instead (soccer, for instance), the leading nation shall count.
- United Irish teams count as the soverign nation of Ireland.
- Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) is recognised as soverign.
- Hong Kong is recognised as soverign.
- Monaco is recognised as soverign.
? denotes that I am unsure how to gather data to use (as yet, feel free to suggest International Tournaments etc.).
Here are my initial thoughts on sports:
- American Football - the medal winners at the 2007 World Championship - United States, Japan, Germany
- Archery ?
- Athletics - top 3 in 2007 World Championship medal table - TBD
- Aussie Rules Football - top 3 in the World Rankings - which will not include Australia due to a self imposed exclusion
- Auto Racing - the pinnacle is Formula One. Every other car sport shall be ignored, including A1 Grand Prix, as it is not representative of the best drivers. The top 2 drivers from each country shall have their points total added at the end of the 2007 season. That will form the basis of the standings. If there is only 1 driver from that nation, then unlucky, as that country will only have one counting driver.
- Badminton ?
- Baseball ?
- Basketball - top 3 in 2007 World Rankings (unless there is a World Cup)
- Biathlon - Nations winner - data unavailable currently, but it did exist!
- Billiards - the leading nations at the World Championship, i.e. Great Britain, India, Australia
- Bobsleigh - see Biathlon.
- Bowls - there are world rankings (I think) that can be used.
- Boxing - since there are so many divisions and so many different World Champions, the results of amateur events may be easier to use.
- Chess - FIDE has a country rating list - just use that.
- Cricket - Test Match rankings as they are traditionally the most representative
- Cross-Country Skiing - see Biathlon
- Curling - I assume there are international tournaments or World Rankings
- Cycling ? (variety issues)
- Darts - the Team World Cup result can be used - Great Britain, Netherlands, Ireland
- Field Hockey - lots of tournaments, not a lot of published rankings available
- Figure Skating ?
- Golf - add the rankings of the top 5 from each nation and sort in ascending order
- Gymnastics ? (perhaps there is a World Championship or something that has a medals table?)
- Ice Hockey - 2007 IIHF World Championship results, not World Rankings - (Men) Canada, Finland, Russia (Women) Canada, United States, Sweden
- Luge - see Biathlon
- Motorcyle Racing - see Auto Racing, but with MotoGP, not Formula One.
- Nordic Combined - see Biathlon
- Rallying - see Auto Racing, but with the World Rally Championship, not Formula One.
- Rowing - the medals table at the forthcoming World Championship
- Rugby League ?
- Rugby Sevens - the standings from the World Sevens Series - New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa
- Rugby Union - the top 3 at the 2007 World Cup
- Skeleton - see Biathlon but we have results - (Men) United States, Canada, Russia (Women) United States, Canada, Germany
- Ski Jumping - the top 3 in the team World Championship - Austria, Norway, Finland
- Skiing - The winners of the Team Event at the World Cup - (Men) Austria, Switzerland, Italy (Women) Austria, United States, Sweden
- Snooker - The top 3 in the rankings for each nation added and sorted in ascending order
- Snowboarding - I assume there's a tour of some sort to base it on...
- Soccer - FIFA World Rankings for 2007
- Speed Skating ? (may be split into Long and Short Track)
- Speedway - World Cup results - Poland, Denmark, Australia
- Squash ? (I think you call it "Racketball")
- Swimming - I assume there's a World Championship?
- Tennis - I prefer using the results of the Davis and Fed Cups (it encorporates the country perspective that this is all about), and giving third place to the higher team in the Team Rankings (available). Alternatives include using the rankings straight off, or using the golf system.
- Yachting - America's Cup - Switzerland, New Zealand, Italy (may drop this because there is no annual event, and some nations had other countries representing them).
So, the basic question, worth doing do you think? And improvements or suggestions on the systems that can be used? Let me know in the comments.
