Which conference is College Football's best? Let The Beast tell You

Les Miles and others feel the Pac Ten is pretty weak. However, the conference's performance in BCS games proves otherwise.
Les Miles and others feel the Pac Ten is pretty weak. However, the conference's performance in BCS games proves otherwise.

1. SEC: No other conference seems to be worthy of the number one spot outside of the SEC. The conference is extremely tough at the top with LSU, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, and South Carolina all being legitimate top 25 teams. The bottom isn’t too shabby either with a resurging Kentucky and an improving Ole Miss team. From top to bottom the SEC is the clearly the nations best, but not as much as many southerners feel that it is.

2. Pac Ten: The Pac Ten is a lot stronger than most pundits seem to believe. They are led by USC, but Cal, UCLA, Oregon State, and Arizona State are also all quality football teams. Last season, USC, Cal, and Oregon State all won ten games and eight teams were bowl eligible. Since 1998, the Pac Ten has been 7-4 in BCS bowls, the SEC is 9-4, so it isn’t that far off from being number one.

3. Big East: I’ll take the top three in the Big East and take them up against the top three of any other conference. Louisville, West Virginia, and Rutgers, are all potential top ten teams and legitimate national title contenders. What hurts the conference is the back end. Connecticut and Syracuse continue to struggle but South Florida and Pittsburgh look to be on the rise.

4. Big Ten: The Big Ten can easily be classified as the Big Two and the Little 9. Outside of Michigan and Ohio State, who is ever any good? Yes, Wisconsin and Penn State tend to have some ten win seasons, but not on a consistent basis. The conference is made up if a bunch of underachieving teams, like Iowa, Purdue, Michigan State, and Minnesota, who always hover around .500. The bottom is horrible as well with Indiana and Illinois waiting for hoops season to start.

5. Big XII: Like the Big Ten, they are really strong at the top but horrible at the bottom. Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Missouri, and Nebraska are all top twenty-five teams, but the bottom of the conference is disgraceful. Half the Mountain West is better than Baylor and Kansas and Iowa State don’t help the cause either.

6. ACC: Great basketball conference, bad football conference. The league’s best team in 2006 was Wake Forest. They should never be the ACC champions, no offense to Demon Deacon Fans. Florida State and Miami continue to struggle, including many other average teams. Luckily Virginia Tech will provide an intriguing story-line this year, being a national title contender.

Best of the rest…

  • 7. WAC
  • 8. Mountain West Conference
  • 9. MAC
  • 10. Conference USA
  • 11. Division 1-AA
  • 12. Sun Belt

You say the bottom of the Big Xll is bad, well the bottom of the Pac Ten is pretty bad too: Arizona, Washington, and Stanford.

Arizona was 6-6 in 2006, and with 20 returning starters they are being tabbed as one of the nation's surprise teams in 2007. I am not basing this on 2006. This is for the present. Watch out the Cats will surprise some people. Washington was also 5-7 and nearly upset Oklahoma in Norman. You are right though, Stanford is horrible.

I guess I was thinking more along an all time thing with those teams. I still dont think arizona is going to surprise much this year though.

People have been talking about Arizona as a surprise for the past four years or however long Stoops has been there. He's been a good recruiter but a lousy coach. They've always been good defensively (they hit hard and often...and late) but terrible on offense. Hopefully for them (I hate Arizona and Mike Stoops though) the new coordinator injects some life into a pretty pedestrian offense. I hate Arizona.

Did you look at anything not in the last 4 years...jesus christ

and did you ever think that teams hover around .500 in the big 10 because maybe, just maybe the conference plays eachother...

I'm sorry, i can accept not seeing them at 2 or 3...but behind the big east...that's a joke...

You've got no qualifiers as to how you ranked them...is it going into this year because i'd bet 4 or 5 teams in the big 10 could probably run the table in the Big east and still beat up on half the big 10 too...

In fact you used the same logic on the big 12 except you mentioned 5 teams instead of 2...in any given year the big ten could have, what? 8 ranked teams (Michigan, OSU, MSU, Wisc, PSU, Purdue, Iowa, MN)...sure some programs are weaker...like Purdue, Minnesota and MSU, but the rest have been good for...decades?

"Did you look at anything not in the last 4 years...jesus christ" No I am not looking past the last four years. Why would the teams in 2001, 2002, have an role in forming a top conference today.

He has a point. Why would Oregon's 2001 Fiesta Bowl mean anything to them now? Ditto Northwestern's run to the Rose Bowl whenever that was. I think he's looking at next year only.

Teams used to struggle to win championships from power conferences because the conference was so damn good...i mean, in the big 10 you had to play PSU, Wisconsin, Michigan and OSU (typically) in a given year...assuming you're not one of them...and still playing 3 (assuming you're the 4th) is tough, on top of a non-conference game or 2 and other games that can be tough (like your Iowas and Minnesotas)

Some how I think the creative coaches at Schiano, Rich Rodgriguez, and Kragthrope, can put a more aggresive gameplan than Lloyd Carr.

Who cares about creative gameplanning? Michigan would beat any of those three teams because they have a better player at every position.

Not really. Did you watch the Rose Bowl. Michigan was probably just as talented or even more talented than USC, but they failed to adjust to their gameplan. USC changed its gameplan. In the second half, coach Carroll decided to air it out on every play. It clearly worked as the Trojans scored a bunch of touchdowns in the second half. Michigan had a great receiver in Mario Manningham, but he wasn't even used. USC had an inexperienced secondary, but Michigan continued to just run the ball. What good is talent if it is underused. The Big East and Pac Ten may not have the most talented players, but the coaches maxamize the players' talents. I can't say the same about Penn State or Michigan.

Don't know but it worked for Boise State. Innovation and creativity cannot be understated but you can't understate having 22 HS all-americas either.

Another good example. You can understate 22 HS all-americans. Florida State and Miami all have a bunch of HS all-americans but how did they do in 2006? Oh ya, the Emerald Bowl (played on a baseball field) and the MPC Computers (played on blue turf in Boise, Idaho). West Virginia, Louisville, and Boise State, all have inferior talent but all won January 1st bowl games due to creative playcalling and excellant leadership.

Big Ten is NOT worse overall than the Big East...I could have understood putting Big 12 over Big Ten maybe, but definitely not the Big East. The logic you applied to Big Ten and Big 12 applies equally well to the Big East except more so...the "powerhouses" of UConn, Syracuse, and USF aren't exactly well known.

People forget that conferences can't just load up on single-sport team goodness. While Baylor is the bottom end of the Big 12, they've got many other sports they're good at that bring the conference prestige.

I agree that the SEC is the best by far with the speed and power unlike that seen in any of the other conferences. Big 12 should be ranked higher than the pac ten and big ten. USC is always in the top along with Ohio State...but who do they play thats at all compared to any team in the SEC...except for maybe Arkansas, Mississippi State, etc...even the losing side of the SEC would give teams in the pac 10 and big 10 a run for their money. the big 12 has some decent teams (texas, oklahoma, oklahoma state, texas tech...) they have speed and the potential to be very good. match them up against other conferences and there will be a surprising outcome
