Which Sports Team has the MOST fans?

15

by user The Beast

Its February, the worst sports month of the year! So I thought, I'd be creative and open up a discussion.

After purusing around Armchair's fan boxes, I began to wonder which team has the most fans. Not just here at the Chair, but across the nation.

We all know that each area of the country has its die hard fans. If you walk into a Michigan clothing store you can find Detroit Lions jerseys. You can find Clipper gear here in LA? Of course, Yankees and Mets gear is plastered around New York City.

However, which team has the most fans? For the most part, teams will have similar number of local fans. So, how do we decide who has the most? This can easily be done by seeing who has fans in other areas of the country.

You can find many Yankee/Red Sox fans on either coast. You'll find Laker fans in Vegas, Idaho, or just about anywhere.

Bronco fans are all across the Great Plains and Colorado.

So before you post your opinion, take this question into consideration: Who has the most fans nationwide?

The easy answer to this question is the Yankees. You'll find Yankees attire in every city and town in the country because they have a history of championships and the general laziness of America leads to millions and millions of fairweather fans who know that by buying Yankees clothes they'll look like they have some idea as to what's going on. This is the same reason why Jeter is so popular. Most people only see his one or two spectacular highlights and have no idea that he's merely ok between those lucky plays. The Yankees (and Jeter) are trendy because they have the illusion of champions going for them, even though they haven't won jack squat for quite awhile.

You can buy many Yankee baseball caps even in this country - although people only thing the NY stands for New York, and not the New York Yankees... So they're inadvertantly Yankee fans without even knowing it.

Alex is right... as a Sox fan, it was quietly infuriating to walk around in London for 6 months last year and see nothing but Yankee hats worn by a bunch of people, most of whom probably don't really even realize what they're wearing, let alone understand baseball.

The Yankees are the most notable team worldwide, and a lot of that has nothing to do with what the yankees actually do on the field. Due to icons like Jay Z the NY hats have become a part of pop culture and you can see many wearing them around the world despite the fact they may have never seen a yankee game in their life. Also Yankees ownership has ties to ManU and that allowed their marketing to enter Europe with help grow the brand very quickly

I don't buy it that just wearing a hat with the logo on it makes you a fan, sorry. You have to know something about the team or the game they play to make you a fan.

Im not saying just wearing the logo makes you a fan. But it does spread the brand name, which is what a team is now days. The Yankee brand and logo is seen more than anything else. Now if any of those people wearing it can name who bats cleanup for them then Id be suprised (like Jerry Seinfeld said we cheer for laundry now days).

What about the Green Bay Packers? Everyone sort of roots for them, even if they don't directly support them.

Alex, I think you should learn to sleep with one eye open. When you made the statement "everybody roots for them (Green Bay Packers)," a contract was immediately placed on your head by the entire city of Chicago!

Green Bay and Dallas are probably the most in the NFL. I'd take the Yankees in MLB. The Lakers for the NFL. Notre Dame for College Football. Red Wings in NHL.

The Steelers have a pretty big fan base, too. Ohio State (football) is another big one, off the top of my head... also, the Kentucky basketball fan base is pretty sizable. Besides Detroit, the Toronto Maple Leafs may have the most fans of any NHL team if we include Canadians. But, you're right, the Yankees and Notre Dame are head and shoulders above everyone else.

Both ND and Yankee fans aren't that knowledgable anyway. Yes, they have their die-hard fans, but most can't name more than five guys on a team. "Babe Ruth?" No he's dead.

Here in the south, USC is very well known because of their football team, but Ive never met a USC fan nor do I see much of their gear in stores. College teams are very regional and are go as their alumni base goes. The only national prescence I can think of for a college team is Notre Dame

I think there should be a definition of what constitutes a "fan." If you include every fair-weather or "because they're cool" (whatever the hell than means) fan, it changes the numbers big time.

I would really have to put the Cubs ahead of the Yankees. Before all the droves of Yankees fans riot, hear me out. At least 75% of the Cubs games are nationally televised TV games on WGN/ESPN/FOX. No matter where the Cubs are playing, there are tons of Cub fans in the crowd, they show them on every broadcast. Look how many folks have become Cub fans because there's nobody else televised in their area. A Cub fan is a real fan, who the hell else sticks with a team that hasn't won a championship in 100+ years?!?!?

You are correct, most Cubs fans outside of Chicago are just as loyal as the Chicago ones. Yankees have a loyal fan base in NYC, but not much elsewhere. Cubs are loyal everywhere. If you don't count fairweather, than I'll give the Cubs the edge. However, since it is hard to decide the true loyal ones are than I'll say the Yankees. Flip a Coin.

I will say the Steelers.

I agree with him.

Yes, Yankees have lot of fanbase, but those fans have been Johnny Come Lately since the late nineties. Steelers have built a large fanbase around the country since the 70s I believe. The edge goes to the Steelers.
