Where does the term "Separation Saturday" come from?

Yesterday, College Football had its "Separation Saturday." I think the term "Separation" comes from separating the contenders from the pretenders, but I'm not sure.

Where does the term come from? And is this week always/usually like this?

It was being used because there were so many ranked, undefeated teams playing against each other. You're right on with the pretender/contender thing. See Notre Dame/Michigan

I don't know where it came from, but I'm glad it's behind us. I was getting sick and freaking tired of hearing "SEPARATION SATURDAY!!" 150 times every time I turned on the t.v.
