When plucky sports fans challenge authority

by Alex Holowczak

The Cradley Heath Heathens were once the Green Bay Packers of British Speedway.

The town is famous for almost nothing else (if you ignore Green Bay's paper industry), and Cradley Heath attracted some of the world's leading riders. Bruce Penhall was a double World Champion when he rode for the Heathens. Erik Gundersen was a triple World Champion in the 1980s, another Heathens rider. Jan O. Pedersen went on to become a World Champion, although he had left the Heathens by then. Current Speedway Grand Prix riders, and the 1996 and 1997 World Champions, Billy Hamill and Greg Hancock, both rode for Cradley Heath in the early 1990s.

They were forced to leave in 1996, because the Council decided to knock down the Heathens stadium, Dudley Wood Stadium, in order to make way for housing. An era was at an end.

Yet, the plucky fans of the Heathens were not to be outdone. A petition was created to prevent the area from being built on. 30,000 signatures were on that petition. And Dudley Council caved in, and decided not to build on the area. So the area remains.

There have been many attempts since then to bring the Heathens back to Speedway. But now, the biggest attempt is being made.

A website has been setup to commemorate the former Heathens. About a month ago, an online petition was set up, in order to get more support, and a chance to get Dudley Council to pay attention.

So far, 2,000 people have signed up to it, including the following names:

  • Flag of the United Kingdom Chris Harris - Winner of the 2007 Speedway Grand Prix of Great Britain
  • Flag of the United Kingdom Scott Nicholls - Captain of the British National team
  • Flag of Australia Leigh Adams - Currently second in 2007 World Championship and captain of Australian National team
  • Flag of the United States Greg Hancock - Former Heathen, and 1997 World Champion
  • Flag of the United States Sam Ermolenko - 1993 World Champion and TV presenter
  • Flag of the United States Bruce Penhall - Former Heathen, and 1981 and 1982 World Champion (sig. #1441)
  • Flag of the United Kingdom Alex Holowczak - Lives about a 10 minute drive away from Cradley Heath, and would love to see Speedway return to the area.

World Speedway is uniting to try and bring Speedway back to Cradley Heath. And so are the local fans. The online petition is available for anybody to sign, and I would appreciate any Chair support for this issue. You don't need to be a Speedway fan, you just need to appreciate the history of the area. With all these petitions over the last decade, there is obvious public support for the Heathens. I would be grateful if you could lend your support to this issue. I add links below. It has been signed from people all over the world, so your addition would not be out of place.

What's in this for you? Well, the satisfaction, mainly. Also, the knowledge that I get to see a local Speedway team. Furthermore, you shall be showered with gifts... Or at least, drizzled with them... Please sign the petition!

I am an expert... QI Series A Episode 5... "Green Bay is the world's largest producer of toilet paper". That was what I was referring to. Maybe they are famous for cheese... But toilet paper is what they should be known for. An example of General Ignorance, I suppose.

In the same episode, it was said that:
  • Two-thirds of the world's lawyers live in the United States
  • American children get $65 billion of pocket money per year
  • There are 15,000 practising vampires in America (most of them living in Seattle)
  • 10,113 virgins insured themselves from giving birth to the Messiah at the millennium
  • Americans are twice as likely to die from liposuction than in a car crash.
Crazy people...

heh if you have ever been to Seattle (and I lived there for two years) you would understand why it would be good for the myth of vampires...the sun never frigging shines. When I first got there, it rained SEVENTY EIGHT days in a row.

It rains in Hawaii more than anywhere else in the world. On average, more than 300 days a year have at least 5mm of rainfall. So count yourself lucky!

If you were a guest on QI, JuTMSY4:

Stephen Fry And now we plunder into the realm of General Ignorance (or something "comical" in words looked up in a thesaurus like that...) - Green Bay, Wisconsin, is famous for producing what?
Random US guest An American Football team.
Stephen Fry Well... Okay, but what industry, in particular?
JuTMSY4 Cheese.

  • CHEESE* (sirens ring, -10 points to JuTMSY4)

Stephen Fry Oh, JuTMSY4, you've fallen into our cunningly bated trap there.
JuTMSY4 holds head in hands.
Alex Holowzak Toilet paper. Green Bay, Wisconsin, is the world's largest producer of toilet paper, not cheese, as everyone may think. It just appears more people know about it's cheese industry, we may have to accuse the Packers themselves for starting that myth...
Stephen Fry Well, I might have to accuse you of reading my cards, because you got everything spot on! Bundles of points leaping towards you. Now, that's the end of the show. Here are the scores:

  • In reverse order, in last place... With -10... It's JuTMSY4...
  • Third place, with -2... Alan Davies!
  • Second place, on +5, it's (random US Guest)!
  • Which means, tonight's winner on +15, is Alex Holowczak!

Well, bad luck JuTMSY4 there... I leave you with a quote from Ken Dodd:
"Cats eyes were invented because their inventor stared down at them and saw the light emmitted from them could light up the road. If the cat was facing the other way, he would have invented the pencil sharpener."

Goodnight!

Is there a difference between the paper mill and producing Teepee, because if you've ever smelled a town that had a paper mill, you'd know it... ugh...

Btw, is the whole diana thing really that big of a deal...

I'm pissed CNN overhere is giving it so much coverage...she was a great person...but its unfortunate that others who did and gave much more, like mother theresa barely get mentioned any more.

I remember it well. I was 7 at the time, and was deeply frustrated that they took all the children's programmes off. It is treated by the media as a really huge deal, yes. But I don't think the people of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland are that concerned anymore. She was a very big humanitarian though, working for charities etc. "The People's Princess", apparently. Personally, it doesn't bother me much anymore. We had live TV and radio coverage of the service this morning. But I didn't watch/listen to it. I didn't think it was that big of a deal, however.

I think it's more that it is the royal family. You won't know what that's like in the US, however, since you've never had one.

Well, like it or lump it, Green Bay makes more toilet paper than anywhere else in the world.

That makes perfect sense now that I think about it. When people eat too much cheese, they'll need to go to the bathroom...This can only mean one thing, the cheese and the toilet paper industry are in cahoots.

Also, it was invented in Green Bay in 1902, and they were not able to advertise it as "splinter free" until 1935.
