What your dad didn't tell you about the HEISMAN!

20
Vote

by Billysellers

I was sickened by the sight I found when i logged in to the ESPN home page this morning. Why are we so wrapped up in putting the Heisman Hopefuls on the front page, does that award have that much to offer and is it even legitimate??? I mean there is a lot you don't know about the award, let me tell you a few things.

To begin with, let's look at the Fan Vote they have. If you can't find it, google it, it's presented by Nissan so you won't be able to miss it. But anyways, go to the site and tell me what they are pushing. No, they are not pushing fan involvement for the love of football. No, they are not pushing issues about the players who we are supposed to vote for. No, they are not pushing information about the goodwill of the award.

  • They are simply pushing Nissan and the award. The Heisman is not bigger than any player out there, the Heisman is actually made by the players who win it...which by the way is why they always choose the player with the most hype and television personality. the better they are on camera, the prettier they are in a magazine and the more people who fall in love with them, the more money Heisman makes.

I bet you did not know that the all of the Fan Votes combined total add up to just 1 vote in the Heisman's voting system. How about that, if 20 million people vote...the total of all their votes counts for 1 person.

What if I told you that that 1 vote is only part of 925 other votes, from a list of voting members that the Heisman will not release...we do not even know who is voting for their award, for all we know it could be Oprah or Donald Trump! Yikes! That means that the total of all votes equals less than 1 percent and even less if you consider how many people are voting.

That is simply a sham!

The O'Brien's Fan Vote is great, it lets you vote daily and the total vote can move a player not selected by the Selection Committee onto the semi-finalists list and will eventually count for 5% of the total vote! WOW, now that makes me feel important as a voter. Check it out yourself at www.DaveyOBrien.com

Furthermore, The O'Brien has only 95 voters and have released all of their names to the public. People like Kirk Herbstreet, Brent Musburger, Verne Lundquist and Keith Jackson are just a few of the people who vote...now that is an actual voting committee right there!

I bet you didn't know that the Heisman Trophy winner has, over the past 25 years, gone on to be the #1 draft pick only 3 times. The O'Brien's winner has been the #1 draft pick 4 times. Interesting huh.

Listen, this season, boycott the Heisman...its not an award that represents college footballs best interest, highlighting the best players of the college football landscape that excel on and off the field. Vote O'Brien!

How about Matt Leinart...pretty boy QB who benefitted from being a slow guy with weapons to dump the ball off to. Not a great talent and not a true winner. Thats why the O'Brien didnt give it to him.

If Missouri beats Oklahoma, they'll have to recognize Chase Daniel, and put him in the mix. If they lose, that's the end of it.

The fact that Ryan Leaf was even a possible Heisman winner scares me at night.

Michael Crabtree out of Texas Tech is the only player who deserves the Heisman

I just checked his stats. WOW! Did I read that right? 70 catches for 1074 yards, and 17 TDs? With 6 games left? That's crazy stuff!

We do know some of the voters: Previous winners. They get to vote (if they want) for the rest of their life. Plus the 1 fan vote plus the media votes (the rest). The Wikipedia page on it is actually quite good: http://en.wi...isman_Trophy "Balloting for the Heisman is selective. The fifty states of the U.S. are split into six regions, and six regional representatives are selected to appoint voters in their states (the regions include the Far West, the Mid Atlantic, Mid West, North East, South, and South West). Each region has 145 media votes, for a total of 870 votes. In addition, all previous Heisman winners may vote, and one final vote is counted through public balloting."

And after 2 minutes of searching, I found on the Heisman website the list of 6 voters and the states that are in each region: http://www.h...lloting.html There are some sports writers that are voters that publicly state so and publish their own "Heisman watch"

Yeah and that is pretty bogus when they are promoting it as a staple of the award. We do not know the voters. They do not make their list public. Check out the O'Briens page and then compare.
