What the Diamondbacks are doing is pretty amazing

On the surface, what the Arizona Diamondbacks are doing doesn't seem that out of the ordinary. Sure, no one expected them to have the best record in the NL at 71-54, but stranger things have happened.

But looking at it a little closer, it's actually kind of amazing what they are doing right now. At the time that I write this, even though they are 17 games over .500, they have been outscored by 20 runs on the season. That is kind of amazing when you think about it.

According to their pythagorean record (which is based on run differential), their record should probably look more like 60-65. Which would put them 4th in the division.

Obviously, that fact makes little difference to the Diamondbacks, but it is something to keep in mind because pythagorean record has usually been a fairly good indicator of future results (for examples see the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs). That means that you probably shouldn't be surprised if the Diamondbacks slowly start to struggle, and eventually lose the division lead.

Of course, I've kind of been waiting for that for about a month now, but the Diamondbacks just keep on winning. Baseball is a funny game.

That is pretty amazing. What's REALLY amazing is that they are in 1st place and 5 games in front of the Padres. The fact of the matter is when the lose, they lose by a lot, and when they win, it's usually a close game. It is pretty funny that the DBax have this lead, but the Padres and maybe even the Rockies and Dodgers need to do better, and any of those teams can win the division. If they got the pitching, all they need to do is pitch well, which is what the Dodgers and Padres rely on. If they got the batting, all they need to do is hit well, which is in the advantage of the Rockies because they play in Coors field, and they got a very good offence and Willy Taveras, Todd Helton, Matt Holliday, Garret Atkins, etc.

I really think that Bob Melvin (manager of the D-Backs) deserves manager of the year because this team gets blown out quite a bit but the team still plays strong and just keeps winning series Melvin keeps this team playing and because of that he is in first place with the biggest lead in the majors.

I don't know about Manager of the Year. Sweet Lou Piniella, IMO, deserves it more than Melvin. He has carried the Cubs to a division lead so far in the season, and the Cubs had what? 66 wins last year? Know, they're probably going to win about 85-90, which is huge for a team. I'm picking Piniella for Manager of the Year, unless something huge happens, like the Diamandbacks winning 25 games from now...

And the Diamondbacks don't have the biggest division lead in the majors. The Mets do. If the Diamondbacks actually pull this off, and win the division, I MAY have 2nd thoughts about my pick for the MOY.

To answer your question Romie, yes the Cubs were 66-96 last season. Lou has made the most of the injuries, the callups, and the power outages to manuever this team into the position they are in. He would easily get my vote for MOY. On a side note, damn shame the game last night was rained out. Big Z looked like he was back in form, mowing the Cards down first time through the order, no hits and 3 K through 3.

I know. I love seeing Big Z pitch gems cuz when he's good, he's fricking awesome. I guess mother nature wants the Cards to have some sort of break.

Only way they could catch a break with Zambrano on the mound. The Cards have a collective .208 average against him as far as guys on the current roster. Rolen is hitting .182 (8 of 44), Edmonds .211, Pujols .205, Eckstein .158, Encarncion .105. Since 05, Z is 6-0 against the Cards with a 1.52 ERA against them, and has lost to them just once since 2004.

Baffling when you consider that even though they have good pitching they've been outscored by 20 runs! And are 17 games above .500.

They lose big and win small... They are rolling up mirrors and smoking them, that's how... in the NL Worst... and will be enjoying the fine golf courses in the Valley of the Sun by October 8th, at the latest...calm down, you'll forget about them by the time you're done eating the cookie...
